Mufflers quiet down all that sound but removing the resonator makes it all the more raspy because it has nothing to turn down all that sound because the resonator is like a chamber that cancels out the unwanted frequencies in the exhaust the best it can that’s why I don’t understand why people like no resonators cause it makes a huge difference

I agree with your stance, just short of going with a valved system of putting in diverters, getting rid of the muffler but retaining a resonator is great for daily driven cars. You get the louder volume under hard throttle without the drone. That’s what I have on my car and it’s perfect. It’s definitely louder than but there’s no drone and very little noise unless it is under load. Be light on the throttle and it doesn’t bother anyone, punch it and it sounds amazing.

Only confusion for me is that on my 07 outback 2.5i I cut the y pipe and mufflers off and I left resonator which gave me a slightly louder and aggressive sound, BUT with the addition of removing the resonator it was 3 times louder and I had to put it back on, seems like the resonator does a better job of silencing the car than the mufflers.

When I'm buying an aftermarket exhaust system I prefer a tuned sound without all the drone and rasp. On the flip side of the coin, a loud exhaust may sound " cool " and turn heads, but it does not make your car any faster. A nice, clean and well built vehicle IMO will score more points than any obnoxious sounding exhaust. Function > Form all day long.

In my experience with a 3G TL:
-resonators cut down rasp (or high RPM unwanted tinny/rattly sound when you get on it)
-rear mufflers (chambered/baffled) will cut down volume across all RPMs, but are also responsible for drone. Straight pipe but with these 2 rears on eliminates all drone.
-mid muffler (in my case straight through like a secondary resonator) didn’t do much, like 5% increase to volume and sounded stock.
My advice is to keep rear mufflers, and swap resonator to something smaller for good tone, but enough to not cause rasp.

My car's "resonator" is technically a muffler, as it is a 3-chamber design.
Most aftermarket fart cans and legit "mufflers" are a straight through design with a large-ish body, suxh as Magnaflow (not XL), Borla, and Flowmaster FlowFX series and arguably call the Flowmaster laminar flow mufflers a straight through design also, as by your definition, it is a resonator, not a muffler. Dynomax Super Turbo is a muffler, but a Ultra-Flo is a resonator, by your definition.
    Confused yet?

The dummies 101version. Say the word it literally does what it says. Mufflers will muffle the sound, making it quieter.
Resonators resonate sound inside of the camber changing/canceling certain sound frequencies.
Corsa uses probably the most clever resonator style "mufflers" out there. They are essentially straight though design but have sophisticated baffles to tune and cancel specific sound frequencies that can eliminate drone. I run one on my car and it has nice tone and volume at WOT but sounds near stock at cruise.

This is good, I'm looking to tone down my mid muffler which is a flowmaster delta race muffler which basically sounds straight piped, I have muffler & resonator delete but before that I had a cherrybomb m80 in place of resonator which made everything too quiet so I took the m80 off which by the way is a muffler that's why it was quiet, so I just need a high quality resonator to refine the sound & tone it down just a little.

@@nblevins81 Well if it's under Warranty don't touch it, I no longer own this car which I modded so much I traded it in for a type s but previous to that the crankshaft failed on my 18 Acura TLX aspec & required a whole new engine at the cost of $8800, so thank God it was still under the 70,000 mile warranty. So my advice is to leave the car alone, unless you have plenty of cash to spend it's just not worth it, or by a car that already sounds good like an m4, or S5

Mufflers stop the exhaust pressure almost completely. Kills more power and sound.
Resonators is a straight flow design with baffles to disrupt exhaust pressure. Baby muffler. Kills less sound and less power. Helps with sound vibrations as it travels thru the pipes. Thats why its usually in the middle.

My truck is true dual straight piped and it has a ton of crackle and its too much around 1300 to 1600 rpm. Idk how to get rid of the cracking. I thought resonator would take out the cracking and popping and still leave the exhaust loud. It read 117 decibels at the exhaust shop but on my phone it read 98 directly at the pipe. What would be my best option thats still affordable, i just paid 330 dollars for the true dual straight pipe so im a little low on funds but i need it quieted down quickly, im 100% pull overable right now. Should i do something like glasspacks or just go resonator or something more 2 in 2 out magnaflow, what should i do?

I have question. I bought a muffler with remote controlled bypass valve to make the exhaust sound louder for my 2009 escape v6. But the muffler guy told me there's no space for the new muffler because its bigger than stock so instead they put the new muffler to the resonator. So the new muffler is my new resonator. Now i notice after the installation my gear changes a little bit delayed from 2.5-3k rpm. Not like before where it shifts at 2k rpm. On the normal drive. Though i got the growly sound that i like when i open the valve. So do i need to have the ecu tuned for the changes or the ecu will learn to cope with it?
