I've watch a fair number of your videos and you and your beautiful wife making wines and have learned a great deal. I've gone from super basic wine making methods to far better systems and techniques. I love that your videos are simple and easy to follow. You guys are so pleasant to watch. I'm gearing up for my first true batch that I can let age for a year. I got that idea from sitting here watching your Fruit Wine - How to make from fruit - Top Picks. Keep up the fun and enjoy. Thank You!

I just brewed my first batch of wine 3 days ago. Today when I came home my airlock was full of wine and my fermentation bucket lid was full of wine. My question is can I take some out of the bucket with out disrupting the fermentation process? I love your videos! I have watch many of them! Some more then 2 or 3 times! Thank you for teaching me how to make wine!
@@HowToDoneRight I took about 2 quarts out of the bucket this morning about 10 am it is now 4:15 and it hasn’t bubbled since. I am so nervous that I ruined the whole batch. Will it start fermenting again? If it doesn’t what can I do to save this?
@@HowToDoneRight Good News! I took the cover off just to see what was going on in there and I noticed one of the zip ties was bent. It was stuck in the cover and so the cover was t creating a seal so no pressure was building there fire no bubbling action. I fixed that put the cover back on and with in 10 min I had bubbles again! Thank you so much again for helping make wine!
I am just starting learning how to make fruit wine at home. I watched most of your videos (thanks !) and have couple questions. 1. Do you use boiled (but cold) water to top up fermentation tank ? Or just tap water ? 2. Not sure how you sanitize your hands, why not using single use gloves ? 3. I have 30 liters fermentation plastic containers. I would strongly prefer avoiding carboys (demijohns ?) for clarification-they are very heavy, very expensive, glass is dangerous and I think they are nearly impossible (especially big ones) to wash/clean inside properly. Stainless steel tanks (with big diameter lid) seem to be lot better but expensive and lot of room needed to store them. I would strongly prefer to use my fermentation tanks for clarification. Some people say "it is fine to do so as that modern plastic is safe up to 40% alcohol..."- what is your opinion ? 4. Sugar or dextrose ? I was told by shop that dextrose is lot "cleaner" than sugar, also I was sold some yeast food instead and they say "use sugar only to make your wine sweeter if needed"... I am a bit confused. I will be making plum wine, cytrus wine and peach wine. Please advice ?
Some great questions... tap water is fine for Topping off. Never add boiling water unless it is ocooled to room temperature. When you put hands in sanitizer they are sanitized. Using gloves would have to be sanitized if use them just not nessary... as for sweeteners always use natural sweeteners like sugar cane sugar, honey or maple syrup.. some people have used artificial sweeteners but if you store wine for longer periods artificial sweeteners may not hold up. I agree glass carboys are heavy that's why I went to 3 gallon size. Much more manageable... eventually plastic Is going to stain and break down after many used and who knows what will be going into your wine unless use glass carboy. And I would worry about affecting off wine flavors with plastic. I'm a big fan of 3 gallon glass carboys. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching the channel. 👍👍🍷🍷😁😁
@@HowToDoneRight Couple more question please. In your video about making orange wine you discarded skins. Is that necessary/important ? Orange skin contains bergamot-it seems very valuable for human health. There are lot of fruits where skin holds most valuable nutrients. In several days I hope to start two (my first !) wines: mandarines wine and Meyer lemons wine...and I am bit torn what to do with skins ? I will be using bags as you recommend (for all my wines). And other trouble: I have 6 plum trees in my garden+one growing "wild"-with many hundreds or thousands small fruits. So I can have huge amounts of plums if good season. Problem are bids ! - they always know when to attack fruits and they will destroy all plums before any becomes ripe :-( Some of my trees are too big to net them (impossible or nearly impossible to do). And that brings me to question: is that good idea to pickup plums and make wine before they start becoming ripe ? I really do not know what to do with that issue.
Great questions. The skins of oranges are bitter or ill say the white part. I see some recipes where people take the zest of the orange the orange part and add to the wine. That's a great idea. But I would not use the entire peel. If you do just do a small batch and test it. Darn birds... try picking early and ripening in a paper bag or on the counter. Your wine will be better if fruit is ripen. 👍👍🍷🍷😁😁
I'm feeling a little slow :). I watched your video last night (awesome!) but is the recipe written down somewhere, or do I need to pause and take notes?
Great video! Very thorough. I'm starting off in the winemaking business and have just wrapped up harvest. My whole wine grapes will be shipped to me on Monday to begin the winemaking process and am very nervous. Will your process for winemaking help me in mine with the whole grapes? If so, how? Can I email or call you for guidance? Thanks in advance for your reply and assistance.
Yes grapes will work perfect for this recipe. I only ever use red star champagne yeast because if i want a 15 or 16 percent abv that yeast will do it. If i want 8 percent abv it will do it. It's the only yeast i ever use after trial and error. It never has failed a fermentation. I have links in the description for it. Thanks for watching the channel. 👍👍
Maybe a little. Did you have some good foaming and airlock bubbling when fermenting? Let settle in secondary for 30 days with airlock to prevent oxygen from getting in. . It should become less sour then once backsweeten wil become sweeter and sourness should be gone by then. Keep me posted. 👍👍
@@HowToDoneRight yes the fermentation itself went great. Started at 1102 and now 1000. I hope the taste gets better. Thanks for your advice Todd. Wil keep you posted!
Hi! I want to start making wine and was looking at the 5 gallon starter win kit that you linked in the description. I have read some of the reviews and some of them seem like some of the supplies aren't up to quality. I was wondering in your opinion, what should I buy outside of the starter kit in order to make great wine start to finish without issues?
You could try and put together yourself with some of the links...i think that kit is missing the 6 gallon bucket which will be easier to use than that big mouth jug they had in the kit. I would prefer 2 glass carboys of the same size. Mesh bags a must. Some of the additives may be missing can't tell what included. Didn't see carboy brush to clean them. That company Is really good. You may to be able to build yourself for cheaper. But that is a good kit to build off of.
We now have a store for everything you see in our videos for supplies. www.amazon.com/shop/howtodoneright
