Man I lost it on the Phil McKnight pantyhose thing!!😂😂😂😂 thanks for the good laugh
Ooh, spoiler, this is gonna be good!
That was funny.
Things you wish you could unsee lol
Phil wears pantyhose???
Yes. While I have no idea where the pantyhose idea to test sharp fret ends actually originated from, for sure Phil McKnight is to be given credit for bringing the idea to a larger audience - he has been doing that exact test for years now in his videos and AFAIK he is the only guitar youtuber who uses this concept.
Gotta give props to Phil...
Let's all take a moment for a hats off and a Happy Birthday to one of the all time greats.
Emmylou Harris is 77 today.
Happy Birthday
ELH!!!
As long as it's not Linda Ronstadt.
I love how you've wired it to have the blend knob. I also like that it's got a tone control for the bridge pickup. 👍 Really cool ideas.
Glad you like it!
I was napping, falling asleep to this video, and Brad's soothing voice when that Scream came on, and it tripped me out. I was like WTF was that, Aliens?
Great video. The "strat" is the most basic form factor of electric guitar in the world. Leo Fender designed it to be modular. I've thrown together many dirt cheap but high quality strat builds in 40 years of guitar slinging. Strats are my thing. I don't care who makes it if the quality and price are right. But when they are not, I do my own build. I laugh my ass off at those who waste money on the Fender "Custom Shop." What a rip! There are also plenty of great aftermarket parts for great prices. For pickups you don't have to settle for Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, or spend even more on Lollar, Fralin, and some of the other "boutique" brands. I've found good pickups for ten dollars or less.
Great video. Excellent job addressing the fret issues using thoughtful approach instead of just filing away!
That's awesome ! Great job on the neck ! Looks and sounds great !
Nice job Brad. BTW I finished the Larrivee. (Yes knuckles are bruised battered & scarred) It was 3/4 size. Any way after 2 weeks of humidification all cracks closed except the biggest. So I CA glued the living sh*t out of it, & the other cracks. Sealed all the open wood, etc. The owner was thrilled. Now they're talking about a 70s Gibson acoustic that used as a bludgeon during a family row. I said I'll try. Great idea on the Blend pot. Never thought of it. (After a year & half of US Navy Electrical Electronics training you'd think I'd remember that crap). Any way your boy is impressed.
LMFAO!!! The “pantyhose” test was the highlight of this video!
People do not realize how much work (if done by hand, even MORE work) a neck requires to make correctly. The truss rod routing, insertion and capping alone is tedious work, if it is a different wood fretboard, that fretboard needs HOURS of work to cut, radius, sand, glue, drill - repeat several times, before it is ready to even begin putting frets on. When I buy a neck and it has perfect fret work, I.E. no sharp edges, no hanging frets, no frets cut short, and no high frets...I count that as HUGE win. If I have to do a little sanding, filing, gluing, refinishing work to it and it has perfect frets....I really do not mind the extra work I have to do.
Same here. And when you do the work yourself it’s YOU who controls the level of quality.
I've scratch built a dozen or so necks from curly maple or flamed tiger maple for les Paul builds and it is almost 1/2 the build of the entire guitar. mahogany is easier but it still takes a lot of work. Fret boards can take hours of work even if they are prebuilt.Very nice work Brad
The neck is absolutely the most important part…
@@phil36135which necks do you like best? I'm starting to collect parts for a custom job
Really nice video! Its another passion i ve discovered building guitars.
Nice leg shot
That neck has a real nice tiger stripe to it.
Very nice, sounds and looks great, thank you,you and the scarred dude are my favorit. 🥳
Throw a series/parallel switch on that blend knob. Sounds pretty badass with those A-V pickups.
Quick and simple answer is no. You cant get comparable hardware and electronics on that budget.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also happy first day of April ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Great work as always brad, the Bone nut /saddle thing is the
coolest mod anyone could make to their fave guitar, but ..
it can be stressful when its almost right !! i`v recently done
a trapezium conversion on my 12 string bridge set up,
hand tooled the lot and a new bone bridge ,made it a
lot better, with a custom string set 9.5s to 44` your
channel always inspires a bit of experimentation !😉
Labour with that neck was minimal because it was CNC'd.
Hey, once again, good job man I think I’m gonna have to attempt it. Build one of those myself. If I do, I’ll let you know how it came out I should say when I do
Long time subcriber great vid! Love the legato
I used to sit around eating with one hand and doing legato with the other. :D
Love your videos! Hope you are well!
I am great, thanks! You?
Don't download the app. The app is not just asking for the right to access your camera, contacts and Wi-Fi network. TEMU also wants the rights to unlock your phone at night without you being there and the right to be able to record audio. You also give TEMU permission to install software on your phone, read your messages and the app can take screenshots.
I couldn't agree more. Temu is such a fraud. I really wish that Canada would police sites like this from China. I was ripped off by Temu for 3 items that were stamped and advertised as solid silver, but i received Silver plated instead. I also asked for a refund for a silver ring that started turning a copper color just after about a week of wearing it. Instead of the full refund i received less than a third of the price i originally paid. I got 6 dollars!!! Please stop supporting these sham companies.
Sweet licks, per usual. Plays the volume knob like he plays the strings and the amp itself. Also, that is one gorgeous neck.
Happy Easter
Venture bros. What a great show.
Let me grab my popcorn
Great work Brad, and you're right, that neck is primo! You watch a hundred guitar builds/refurbs, and still learn new shit, thanks!
Great guitar build Brad! And you are a genius guitar player too!
Thanks for the compliments. I actually almost deleted this demo and started over because I wasn't really feeling it at the time. :/
Nice man! That turned out great and I really dig that amp. I was checking Temu after your first build from them. Those nice necks sold out fast. I will keep looking for parts from them to complete another build. Should only cost me about a bill since I have the body, pickups and pickguard already! Great work and thanks for the inspiration bro!
Really enjoying your videos and your resourcefulness (esp. your amp videos too)! Those pickups in particular look very well put together - I'm surprised (and impressed) that they even bothered engraving the model into the bobbin. But dude.. that pantyhose test lol!!!!! mad respect
The pantyhose test likely scarred me for life. 😄. Too funny, brother Brad!
Yeah you can't unsee that ! lol
you know its been a while since I heard you play, and a few short years ago you had great skills, but now I must say your lead lines are just killing it. Nice work all the way around.
TBH, I almost scrapped this whole demo and did it again because I didn't think it was that good. Wasn't feeling it. I think I just needed more sleep.
Dude so long as you do builds from cheap parts. Ill be watching. Im learning from you dude. 👍
Sure those are not your pantyhose? They fit pretty nicely. The laser engraver on the headstock is a good idea; I've been looking for an alternative to water slide decal, and this gives me an idea. Thanks.
I wonder what kind of bone they use? Allegedly the goat skin gloves have sometimes tested as dog.
Another great video, those necks are awesome.Ive never seen that quality of wood (curly maple) on a fender. Maybe custom order or something. All the parts looked good, and I to like the brass saddles.I will be building me one in future. I hope they keep everything in stock until I can get my money right.Things have been kinda tight for me lately. oh well thank you for your videos
Great video!
I'm going to give a 'LMAO'...if you have to ask why...watch the video
Really really enjoyed that!!!…🙏🏻🎈🎈
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thankyou Brad
It’s my 55th birthday and I think this was the best gift by far
I’m super grateful to steward some great gear and a few wonderful instruments
What more could one ask for ?
Shalom
Happy birthday!
The only time l think an Audio Taper Pot is a better choice. Is when the player is partial to doing frequent volume swells with the knob rather than a pedal.
Your daughter's fridge art is amazing!
I think so too.
I must have had bad luck with Tung oil because when I have used it in the past, I find that it stinks really bad years later. I switched to wipe on poly. The satin stuff is pretty good
I only screw the neck on with a hammer drill ( compression on the neck to body increases the contact to the joint for more sustain .
Happy Easter Brad
Happy Easter!
I don't think that's what they meant by "pantyhose" test. At least I have never seen it done like that. Thank's for that image that is now etched into my brain Brad ! I'm not going to be able to sleep now. lol.
Nice dremeling on the pickguard! 🎸👊🏼🎸
Sounds good
Don’t they have a fret pressing tool like an arbor press with attachments?
Dunno. Didn't look.
I just looked. Didn't see one.
If you need an arbor press for cheap I'd check harbor freight if there's a store near you.
FFS , Temu 🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢
I ♥️ccp too, keep up their good work lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That pantyhose test was gold!! Where’s Phil McKnight wearing his wife’s pantyhose?! Love it!! (Hey, if male pro football players can wear them, why not male guitarists?!)
Great builds! They came out really nice!
Ha
I'll using the the brass bridges, but I feel the trem blocks in brass are well cool too. These are good for getting into builds if starting out, cool vid
I'll look for a brass block for both of these Strats and upgrade later.
@@TheGuitologist in UK I get them for about £20 to £25 you might get them less off temu check their dimension on screw holes and trem holes sometimes they can be a few mm out and can mean DIY drilling which is irksome but 9 times out of ten there bob on i think it makes a difference
Minwax wipe-on Poly also works excellent. Been using it for years. Fine steel wool buffing after it dries gives you a nice satin finish. Only drawback it takes a while to dry, very much depends on your humidity level.
I've used several products like that you can get a Home Depot on guitars with very good results. Rustoleum makes good spray on poly finishes if you're doing a body refin. Saves time when the color and clear coat is in one can.
I was looking for this comment. I have found that tung oil stinks after a couple years. I use the wipe on poly satin. Little trick you can use, add some Japan Dryer to the wipe on poly. It’ll dry faster
Where'd you get the engraver, also could you use your phone with it
Perfect example of how when a customer wants "just another color pick guard". It's never straightforward.
They NEVER just drop right in.
You got me at the pantyhose test !!! 🤣 We should ask Phil Mcknight to do that this way now !!! Noy sure he will comply though ...
Temu has some great deals (except for the clothing) to be sure and I use them a lot.
However, for around $200.00 or less you can get a Fire Fly guitar with locking tuners, bone nut, roasted maple neck, roasted ash or mahogany body, 2 alnico five pups and one Hum-bucker in the bridge and stainless steel frets. These are quality guitars that rival Fender made guitars.
My 2 Stratocasters cost me $169.00 for a relic and $179.00 for a solid white guitar plus shipping. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.
I've heard great things about those, for sure.
Those cheap string roller actually have a much preferred string height compared to all the other expensive alternatives including Graph tech. FWIW
You did well, you've got the luthier in you though... Some of what you did was beyond my abilities and to buy all the tools would bunk up the price quite a bit... But for those who are set up this is a great way forward...
sweet project brother!
ive noticed loads of import guitar companies using the "B" pots for volume...
nice demo on the pots with tap testing!
Brad is tha man!!!!!dude can make anything awesome
You have a Jag! Approved!!!
OMG asmr pick guard film removal not 1 but 2 x… lol
Dude you dad rocked the crap outta that temu build, nice rippin’ n riffin’…
Neat. I would like to see how TEMU parts hold up to months or years of settling down, as far as the neck remaining stable etc.
Of course, any unfinished or oiled raw maple neck should be expected to shrink a bit. Bill Nash actually says it's a feature that his guitars lose moisture in the first few years. Fret sprout is inevitable.
Great work and video, but people need to look into temu.......a lot of people are taking the bait, hook, line and sinker. I simply refuse to even load that website on any device.
35:30 Lucky 🍀 Larry😂
Amazing how he was able to come out making billions on that tragedy. What a lucky guy. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
Does temu make kitchen cabinets? Maybe look into that
Awesome 💯😎 Looks good sounds good... Cheers 🍻🥃🥃 🎸 🎵🎶🎶
Might want to check for lead in those frets.
Nice!
All my necks pass the pantyhose test.
Waiting in England 😊
Log pots are different... I've used them for volumes for a while and linear pots for tones... might have to swap them around or do 1 type in my next build
sounds good how does it feel?
Awesome
That's what she said.
I'm still hearing a yaw. Enjoyed the video.
A yaw?
Great vid Brad, i cant find guitar bodies anywhere on temu......
They come and go. Check again later
Kinda funny, I'm wrapping up a partscaster while watching this. I've got a sunburst alder Jazzmaster style body, vintage style 6 screw trem, 3 Firebird mini-humbuckers on a Strat style 5-way switch, and a nice Squier Strat neck. I found the neck at Goodwill for like $10-$15, classic one piece maple neck with the walnut skunk stripe and a nice smooth satin finish.
One thing to keep in mind when thinking about the extra work needed with the frets- more and more frequently these days even a brand new instrument from a big name company needs some fretwork and setup. Fret ends rounded, nut slotted down to an appropriate height (most are way too high), truss rod adjustment, bridge height and intonation adjusted. Seriously, I have seen many of these issues with guitars in the couple thousand dollar range.
Great video man, the pantyhose test was hilarious!
Nice Bianca Censori impression! That, and, what a tribute to Leo's original design: you can make one with parts off a Chinese discount website, with ordinary tools, and it still works, plays well, and sounds like a SSO.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that was meant to be a Squire neck, I have a Squire Strat from 2009 that has a flame maple neck with a body that was sprayed Lake Placid blue and then sprayed black.
Just wondering would 500k pots be better… can you still get them??..🙏🏻🙏🏻
250k pots sound better with single coils if you are going for tone.
Yes and no. It depends on the pickups. Darker sounding strat pickups with higher outputs might do fine with 500k. The best thing about all of this is there really are no rules. Experiment and see what you like.
Oh, and my second response is, yes, you can get 500k pots.
also I generally prefer working with 8 hole, or 10 if possible
I wonder if Chinese necks like these are Chinese Maple? It's a softer wood than Rock Maple, and it makes more sense that they'd use it rather than import Maple from North America.
great „pull it“ easter egg and love your videos and teachings. Thank you!
That's kinda funny! I gave a friend of mine a Custom Fender because my 60's Korean parts and Lafayette made Sears sold 50's maple neck strat style non skunk stripe Truss rod by neck pickup adjuster sounds and plays better.
I apologize For a previous text where I implied you were selling "junk' to your subscribers..
Being an electrician is one thing, Knowing Your Guitars is another, I have a Fender Champion 110 amp that needs to be fixed, and I don't say "Needs Fixed"!
I hope you can be proud and recover from anything I said that busted your balls and be happy! I can fix the amp Myself but I have an inkling you are better at it than I am.
Pushing 61 I definately need a magnifying glass to prevent me From pissing on your shoes asshole!
Harmonic minor riffs?
That guitar sounds nice . Thanks for the pantyhose thing , very funny😂. Great video. Been purchasing some stuff from Temu for a guitar I had laying around and needed parts for better than 10 years . I need the neck for it . Have a great one Brad !
Put japan, dryer in your tung oil it will dry three times faster!!
Thanks for the tip!
You could build one of the early EVH frankenstrats when he was still using the fender trem and just lubing up the nut, so to speak..Use the Guitar Fetish VEH bridge pickup theyre pretty damn close to what he used and great value for the money
Hope you didn't experience any of those high winds recently in the Louisville area
No Temu neck plate? Now you've gotta restart for a full Temu guitar. Tsk tsk.
Hey Brad nice legs better guitar, btw did you see Tim Sways last post ? Debunking tone wood its great watch it mate ! From Charlton London England....😅
For the dead spot on the blend - why did you just not solder to the lug?
If you’re not making a video and you’re just playing guitar at home for fun, what amp are you plugging into? Always wanted to ask you that but never did for some reason lol
