Bad Bunny & K-Pop artists dominating the global streaming charts

K-pop is making a resounding impact on the music industry, as revealed by Luminate’s 2023 Midyear Report. The global music market has achieved over 1 trillion streams at an unprecedented pace, reaching this milestone in just three months, a full month faster than the previous year. With a 30.8% increase in global streams compared to last year, the music landscape is becoming increasingly international.
The report highlights the growing popularity of non-English language music among U.S. listeners, with 40% of them enjoying music in languages other than English. Astonishingly, 69% of U.S. music listeners appreciate music from artists originating outside the country. Among the non-Anglophonic music preferences, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German, and Arabic stand out, with Latin genres and K-pop taking the lead.
Streaming data reveals that Spanish and Korean language music dominate the top 10,000 most streamed songs during the first half of 2023. Spanish-language music’s share of the top 10,000 has grown by 3.6% since 2021, while English-language music has declined by 4.2% in the same period.
When examining album sales, K-pop asserts its dominance. In Luminate’s 2023 Midyear Top Albums chart, K-pop albums occupy six of the top 10 spots when considering physical and digital sales. Moreover, K-pop fans display exceptional enthusiasm for physical formats, being 69% more likely to purchase vinyl and 46% more likely to purchase CDs compared to the average U.S. music listener. Notably, one in four K-pop fans has bought a cassette in the past year. The influence of K-pop on the music scene is undeniable, as it captivates audiences and propels the industry forward.
