  • CLOSED: Harrisburg Mall - Harrisburg, PA. Opened in 1969 as Harrisburg East Mall, this mall's 54-year run ended on January 31st, 2024 when the mall officially closed for good. Remaining tenants were given eviction notices and had to vacate by the 31st. My visit takes place just 3 days before the last day. Demolition begun shortly after and is still a work in progress. Bass Pro Shops remains and will stay open for now. Hope you enjoy the walk through Harrisburg's largest mall.

I think some malls should be saved cause some are in very good condition hell they could be turned into hotels or apartments or something why demolish something that looks that good!

Hard to know that this was demolished instead of being repurposed! So beautiful and what a waste 😢

But, on the other hand, if they weren't going to repurpose the building, I would rather they go on and demolish it than have it left to rot and decay, which would really be a shame. It was a nice looking mall.

I went here a lot with my dad as a kid. I didn't get to see him often, so when I did, and we got to come here, it was a real special treat. Lots of great memories were made. Harrisburg Mall might be gone, but it's not forgotten.

Great video, sad as always to see a great mall die but it's going out in style, not like Century III and Northrige. No need to apolozie for the celay, we know you are super busy and I do thank you for your videos. :)

Agree with you on the going out in style part. Hurts to see Northridge and CIII in the conditions they're currently in. Though it seems to me that Northridge will have a less labored demolition now that it's under the control of the City of Milwaukee... on the other hand though, CIII is still owned by Moonbeam.

Is so unbelievable to see the downfall of the east mall and the colonial park mall .....back in the 80s and early 90s on any weekend you almost had to fight to get a parking spot they both used to get so full now they are gone .....the east mall was always a go to since they toys r us was in the back corner of the parking lot .

Very nice video. Was nice to see an explorer video that didn't seem rushed through. I had never visited this mall but it felt like I was saying goodbye to an old friend. You take your time looking as to mentally imprint the memory of that place. Great editing.

Over the past 2 years, a ton of failing malls such as this one are getting shut down. With high interest rates and a slowdown in the economy, these projects will more than likely take way longer than anticipated to go up. For those who live nearby, keep your expectations low for the next project on this site.
As for the video, excellent quality as always, Wallie! I love to shop at Bass Pro Shops, but we don't have one on our side of Houston. We have seen two proposed Bass Pro Shops on the North side that have pulled out for one reason or the other.

My former childhood mall had the most abrupt closer you'll ever see. There was a safety inspect, and it was found that the building was a health and fire hazard. They gave the notice to the owners who decided it wasn't worth updating the 80s tech to modern day and gave their tenants a 6 day notice to vacate and then shut down. Opened in 1965.

Thank you for sharing this video. Watching it brings back memories of Harrisburg East Mall (old habits die hard), which held a special place in my heart while growing up not far from there. I feel a sense of sadness knowing it's gone. The fountains were always a favorite feature of mine, especially when visiting my mom at the Rea & Derrick Drugstore where she worked. We'd sit by the fountain outside the store, watching shoppers pass by, creating cherished moments together.
The mall opened just three years before Hurricane Agnes devastated downtown Harrisburg and other cities in the mid-Atlantic region. Sadly, downtown never fully recovered as a shopping destination, and some attributed this decline to the rise of malls like Harrisburg East and Colonial Park. It's ironic to realize they're now victims of progress, much like the downtown stores were when the mall was new.
Despite its closure, the mall still looks beautiful in the video, particularly after the remodeling in the early 2000s. Even though I had moved away to MD by then, I remember being impressed by its grandeur when I visited a few months after it's grand re-opening. It's a reminder of how things can change over time, and what once seemed like a thriving hub of activity is now just a part of history.

Excellent video Wallie!! Nice looking mall. I’ve seen other dead mall content creators covered this mall when it was dying. Thank you for your effort in preserving a part of history when most of us cherished our local malls in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, and even before my time in the 60s and 70s. Keep up the good work! 👍

I actually was at the mall the same day as you with my family to do a final walkthrough before it closed. Another great video and sad to see it go along with the Toys R Us just outside the mall that's still sitting abandoned.

That’s a beautiful mall I hope it can be saved. I would hate to see it demolished. Times were a lot better than they are now. Everyone is struggling and almost always in a bad mood. We the people can fix that though. We have a mall empty where I’m at and it’s been in that state for several years now. I hope someone can save it and bring it back to life soon. Last time I was by it, it didn’t look like it was being maintained at all. Windows on the second floor food court were broken out letting the weather in.

A great video, Wallie! 👍👍👍👍 In the very early 1990s, I was at the Harrisburg East Mall, as that was the name of the Mall. The Mall was located in Dauphin County in the Lower East Paxtang Borough of Harrisburg. At the same time, in the very early 1990s, I was also at the Colonial Park Mall. Sadly, that Mall is dying or dead. Personally, I liked The Colonial Park Mall better.

In my opinion, this mall should be demolished for at least an indoor skatepark, at least a few retail stores, at least a few restaurants, and a Car Wash with a site layout very similar to the Brightworks Car Wash in Fort Worth, Texas but a lot bigger with an on-site auto repair center, on-site gas station, convenience store, and at least ten more indoor hand wash bays for many different types of cars, trucks, buses, boats, and RVs.

Does anybody know when 2nd & Charles, and DXL will move out? Because as of when I’m commenting, Google Maps says that they are still open and the whole mall is supposed to demolished including the spaces of these stores. And also, has demolition of the interior of the mall begun yet? Because the three vacant anchors spaces have already been almost fully demolished. If anyone knows anything, it would be a big help because PennLive hasn’t posted anything on the Harrisburg Mall since the H&R Block closing
