  • The world's best garden tool is a Hori Hori, a Japanese digging knife. Heavy steal forged into a slender trowel that's great for digging, prying and breaking up hard clumps. The serrated edge is perfect for sawing through stubborn weeds or hacking back some briars. Once you garden with the Hori Hori, you won't want to be without it. Ever.
    This is a good Hori Hori with a comfortable handle: www.amazon.com/...

    I agree 100%. I've had my Hori Hori for over 3 yrs now and I love it! Mine actually helped spark a relationship... when I moved to my current home a neighbor came over to welcome me and I was working up a flower bed in the back yard. When she saw the Hori Hori she was like, "what the heck is that?!" and made some comment about it looking like a "Rambo knife". Anyway, the conversation continued and it turned out that she was a bit of a gardener also. After a few weeks of casual conversations, I ended up getting her a Hori Hori as a gift. I got a kiss in return! You can fill in the rest for yourself (;

    You ladies are having too much fun. Pretty impressive when you stuck the tree (made me jealous). Before long you will be strapping folks to a rotating wheel and throwing knifes at the board blindfolded. Mrs. Wranglerstar can bring the bear. I bet she has already trained it and I know Cody can juggle chainsaws and axes. I have used retired kitchen knifes before and they worked good so can see the Hori Hori being handy as a side pocket.

      FRESH PRINCESS No, Corrin, I haven't but I've wanted one. I have an antique spade that's all one piece so no breakage there but it's a bit too wide and not sharp enough for a lot of things. I think the hori hori will be extremely useful, especially to get the weeds that pop up in the gravel where my raised beds are as one example. I hate pesticides and am all for organic gardening but the weeds are killing me. LOL

    I'll try to be brief with this post. I'm 45, no kids, separated from my wife, currently live 250 miles from my nearest family, and have absolutely no reason to continue living where I currently live. I have a lot of reasons for wanting to move. I've been watching Cody's videos for about two years and yours since you started. Between you and his family's videos you all have me convinced that the thing I have been missing and seeking my whole life is the location and lifestyle you all have. I've decided to move, buy land, and hand build a small cabin to live in the rest of my life. I grew up living in the city and never liked it. I've lived in the country off and on for the last 25 years and much prefer it to how I was raised. I've begun selling my property, trimming my fat, and getting my ducks in a row ready to make my move. Within the next month I'll be debt free and have only my house left to finish remodeling and sell. Based on what I've learned from watching from Codys videos, and what I've read on the internet I have a fairly good idea of where he lives and at what altitude. As near as I can tell this area is perfect for what I want to do with the rest of my life. I'm planning on buying a Harley and traveling out your direction sometime around September to look at land, cities, jobs, etc. I have no friends or family living anywhere near you all to ask questions of. As odd as it sounds, the one thing that could be a deal breaker for me moving out to Oregon are the critters of the night. I'm a night person and like to spend time sitting on my porch and working in my garage at night. A big part of what I enjoy about the night are the sounds of the animals. Where I live in southern Missouri we have cyotes, fox, deer, the rare bear, rare mountain lion, and rare wolf. I'm very used to being outside at night and having a large critters sneak up on me and make their presence known. I especially love listening to the cyotes and fox at night. I also very much love listening to the frogs and toads singing. I won't be able to spend but maybe 4-5 days out in Oregon as it will take a few days to get there and back, and there are other places I plan on visiting out west also. My question of you is this. Being as I can only spend 4-5 days sleeping out in the woods in Oregon in September I won't be able to get real feel for the sounds of the night. Sounds also change with the season. Right now in Missouri the toads and frogs are singing at night and its a special time of year for me for that reason. Could you please tell me if Oregon has frogs and toads and if they sing at night there. I couldn't imagine living someplace where I never heard them again. We also have locusts here singing at night. Does Oregon have a locust season? Are there other critters and bugs that sing at night in Oregon during various seasons. I know it sounds odd that night sounds, or the lack of them could prevent a person from living someplace but I find with me it's very true. I need them like I need air, they are very important to me. Could you tell please tell what night sounds like in Oregon throughout the year. What you have to say could either encourage me to move northwest, or prevent me from making a huge mistake. Thanks P, I value your input and trust your advice. If you would prefer to answer me privately my email is joebonomono@gmail.com my actual name is Paul.

    • @Thefreshp
      @Thefreshp  10 років тому +1

      Paul, I'm not sure if you've been out west, but the PNW coastal zone is a temperate rain forest, the only other one that I'm aware of is New Zealand. So along the coast and the coastal range in the small patches of undisturbed forest, you will find ferns and moss dripping with moisture year round. Southern coastal Oregon has a meritime climate, averaging around 68 year round, growing more defined as you move away from the coast; the winters are mellow and the summers are often colder than inland. The frogs, lizards, newts and creatures that live in temperate forests abound. As do bear, coyote, bobcats, mountain lions, etc. I've lived here on and off my whole life and never seen one, but hunters find them all the time if they have dogs. Just beyond Cody and I to the east is high dessert. You can google the town of Bend to get an idea of what a developed part of the state looks like from the center. Here you dont have the amphibian noises because its dry, but you do get coyotes. On the very east of Oregon is a tiny town pushed up against the Wallowa mountains. Its high dessert rural, the two towns to google are Joseph and Enterprise. They're a mix of ranching and art. Wild, rugged and dry. Sunny rather than rainy. Because of this diversity Oregon and Washington and even Idaho have micro climates within microclimates. Peoples settlement patterns effect nature drastically, so the more industrialized a town city, the less diverse nature. Most of the state has deer/elk populations, badgers, bear, cougar, bobcat, beaver, squirrels, you name it. But not in cities obviously, or around areas with huge farmed plots. So think of Oregon and Washington from west to east, wet and super moist on the coast to high desert arid in the east. We live on the cusp of the arid part where pines and oaks live, with 30% more sun than the willamette valley, but not as much moss and ferns. I get the occasional frog in my garden singing to me, but the place is brimming with lizards. I hope that helps. I know I didn't directly answer your question about night sounds, but I feel I owe you an accurate portrayal of the diversity of the state and what you can expect. Crater Lake is in the southern coastal range, so you can google tat and get an idea. Land is big out here.
      Can I point out a personal observations?

    • @joebonomono5078
      @joebonomono5078 10 років тому

      Thank you for your reply. I have not been out west as an adult, only as a child and I don't remember it. Its only been the last five years or so that I have given much thought to where exactly I need to be. I left Kansas City and moved to southern Missouri 15 years ago to look after my mom. She was in poor health. I never expected to be here very long as I didn't think she would live more than a few years. As it turned out she lived until 2 years ago. Now with her death and the break up of my marriage its time to finally move on. Whenever I've told people about what I'm looking for they always tell me Oregon. I started youtubing the things that interest me and repeatedly I found Codys videos and so I started following him. He's a guy who is living the life I would like to. I'm an introvert and don't really like leaving my property. I'm very content wandering around my yard talking to bugs, squirels, toads, and my trees. That may sound odd, but these trees are trees I planted and get my fruit from. The squirels in my yard aren't just any squirels, they are my squirels and they live in my yard. The same goes for the rabbits and spiders. It makes perfect sense to me to greet them and talk to them as I walk my property telling them its nice to see them, that they look good today, thanks for the peaches, whatever. I like to fill my day tinkering around planting, building, and repairing, basically everything Cody does. I've decided to just embrace this aspect of my personality and commit to it rather than work against it by living a more conventional lifestyle like I was raised. I've decided to buy about 10 acres because I feel that's the minimum I can be comfortable on and it should be large enough to provide what I will require for the rest of my life. I will need a pond, garden, woods, and a field. I'm interested in building my cabin from what I find on the property. I plan on timber framing and stone masonry. My concern has been how do I make a living on my property. I have a small monthly income from an inheritance, and a savings that can get me started and keep me afloat for a few years if I live frugally. I've decided to try my hand at growing ginseng. Ginseng seems to me to be the ideal crop because it will allow me to wander around my woods collecting stones, cutting limbs, and maintaining my small forest which is what really interests me. I think ginseng may be the thing that allows me to live how I want and make enough money to get by. High hopes, maybe, but I owe it to myself to try. A part time job may be required also but that's ok. Im totally fine with something relatively average as I have no desire to set the world on fire being a suit and tie guy. I've noticed Codys property seems to offer the woods, weather, materials, etc that I'm more or less interested in and will require. Missouri happens to offer that also but I feel like I've "been there done that" in Missouri. Its time to move past my home state, my moms death, my failed marriage, and start somewhere new. Like I said earlier, people always tell me Oregon is the place for me. I'm happy to hear you have frogs and lizards out there. I now feel pretty comfortable in thinking a trip out west to look around is worth my time. Codys videos have never really addressed the critters he has other than bats, cyotes, bears, deer, and bees. Those are all very important and I love them but I've been curious what about what else I would find. What would nigh time sound like, what would summer smell like, what would scurry under a rock, into brush pile, climb a tree as I walked around my property if I bought land like his. Those are all things that are important to me and are a deciding factor about where I finally end up. I require a big diversity of critters to talk to. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question and give me an overview of your state. You have built my confidence and encouraged me to investigate further. If you care to add any more observations they would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey, backpackers: buy one of these! Great for cutting roots and tough enough for the rocky stuff, unlike the pathetically-plastic "hiking trowels" you'd usually see on the trail. Soil in the wilderness is NOT very soft, which is an important consideration for making Dakota fires, bedding areas, and... um... hygiene... conveniences. :)

    Lol, crazy American ladies with knives. Excellent.
    I like gardening but I've never seen or considered one of these tools. I may indeed make one.
    I see you've done plenty of cooking videos and they all look very nice (the thumbnail pics), so I'll be watching those.
    It's really good that you and your family are doing these sort of things, and especially sharing them with the world. Big thumbs-up.

    • @WG1807
      @WG1807 9 років тому +1

      Well, I will add it to the (rather large) list of things to make. I have a coal forge so that's how I will do it. A piece of vehicle leaf-spring should work well. Might have to be next year now. Tons of stuff to do before Xmas.

    • @Thefreshp
      @Thefreshp  9 років тому

      Would you send me a photo when you complete it? I know that's a tall order, but I'd love to see it.
      Merry Christmas.

      @Thefreshp  10 років тому +1

      Beth, I put a link to a quality Hori Hori under the video box. It's Amazon, and it's a good value. There are cheep, knock offs ont he market, but this is the one I have, the handle is comfortable and the steel is good quality.

    BTW, "Hori" means "dig" in Japanese. Asian people repeat a word once
    like "Hori-Hori" ,"Mei-Mei (nickname for a girl)" to express their cuteness.
    Yes, this digging tool is as cute as kitty.
