- Long Guis replace Adamantoise once you finish the Cie'th missions that form a circle in the Gran Pulse Central Expanse (sorry, I forget the numbers). These things are way meaner, more damaging, and have 16 million HP so I don't recommend even trying them until you are fully maxed out on crystarium and have the tier 3 ultimate weapons for your characters. Also, this probably isn't the most efficient way to farm these things, but I have yet to find another that is consistent (without shrouds and summon)
My setup is Fang with 3x Kaiser Knuckles and Genji Glove, Lightning with the same setup as Fang, and Vanille with a Magistral Crest, Collector Catalog, Connoisseur Catalog, and Genji Glove.
Paradigm setup is
Sen/Sen/Sen (default)
Com/Med/Med
Syn/Syn/Syn
Rav/Rav/Rav
Sab/Sab/Sab
Com/Com/Com
IMPORTANT: If you ever see the Long Gui casting Quake, Roar, or Ultima SWITCH TO SEN/SEN/SEN to eat the damage, or you will most likely die/lose a member. This applies throughout the entire fight. You may want to do this for stomps as well (I do)
Start off with Sen/Sen/Sen and eat the Ultima, then switch to Syn/Syn/Syn and get haste and protectra on each member. If you took a lot of damage from the ultima (member has less than 5k HP) then switch to Com/Med/Med and heal the low members. Switch to Sab/Sab/Sab and get deprotect and imperil on the leg, then switch to Rav/Rav/Rav and break the leg until 900%. Once it's at 900% switch to Com/Med/Med and highwind it to kill it.
Switch back to Sab/Sab/Sab and get deprotect+imperil on the other leg. Switch to Syn/Syn/Syn and cast bravera and faithra on each member (do Fang last). Lightning should enfire everyone as you're doing this. Once buffed, go to Rav/Rav/Rav and break the leg, this time to 700% before switching to Com/Med/Med and highwinding it
Switch to Sab/Sab/Sab and cast Slow on the Long Gui. Continue casting debuffs on it until deprotect, deshell, imperil, slow, and POISON are on it. Poison is important. Once that's done, switch to Rav/Rav/Rav and break the head until about 900% before switching to Com/Com/Com. Just keep attacking it and make sure to throw in a highwind before the break bar is done. The Long Gui should have around half its HP gone
Now, instead of trying to break it again, heal up if needed and rebuff haste and protectra on everyone. Once the Long Gui gets up, change to Sen/Sen/Sen because it will attack you. Sometimes it will do roar+ultima, ultima+stomp, or just one of the 3 so be sure to wait a second before moving to the next paradigm.
Again, switch to Sab/Sab/Sab and get imperil+deprotect on a leg, then Rav/Rav/Rav to break it. If you have bravera and enfire on your character still, switch to Com/Med/Med at 700%, otherwise wait till 900% and highwind the leg to kill it. Repeat for the second leg.
As he's falling down, switch to Syn/Syn/Syn and cast bravera on Fang IF she doesn't have it. Then just repeat the instructions above (debuff to the head, break it, commando it down). This should kill it, but if it doesn't, I guess you can try to kill the legs again, though I've never had to do all that again.
Remember, always switch to Sen/Sen/Sen when the Long Gui is attacking/casting something, otherwise you will probably die. Then switch to Com/Med/Med if needed before continuing on.

I remember doing this boss fight, really enjoyed it! One of the best boss fights in the game because it really makes you think if you dont know what to do and have not looked up any guides on how to beat it.
The roar/ultima combo or Roarltima as i call it, has shown me many game over screen.

This and Death strategy (the Death -> Change to Com/Com/Com and deal 999,999 damage, high accessory requirement though) was my favourite way to kill the tortoises.
I remember when I got to Gran Pulse years ago for the first time and tried fighting one of these under leveled... LOL. He had slain me so bad.

For info, adamantoise trap drop rate is 5%, Long gui trap drop rate is 25% (!)
But after you got a 5-star win, the drop rate should be 5 times the base case, which raise up to 25%
Tommy TANG wrong those percentages are at 5 star rating, meaning common drop 25% at 5 star, rare drop 5% at 5 star. Adamantoise and Long gui don’t have the same item drops. Also zero stars increase the odds of shroud drops!
Thank you for this. I didn't have quite as many accessories as you (Genji Glove on Fang for sure), but using your guide I managed to take one down on my third try. (first try i had no idea Ultima would one-shot me). I am so glad I got this trophy! I feel like I can take on anything in this game now!

He gives you a growth egg which doubles Cp. If you have a decent sentinel and hope is maxed at medic you can cast death repeatedly in neochu. Neochu is one of the marks.

@CandyHam Its a skill in the Sentinel crystarium that make you survive with 1 hp an attack that would normally KO you. works once per fight.

@abo3lianTV Because monsters can only drop one item, with the exception of shrouds (survivalist catalogs). The game first calculates getting a rare item. If yes, it nulls the check for a normal item, if no, it'll calculate for the normal item. The shroud check, though, isn't nulled by item checks.
@cloudtheavenger the game AI gives priority to rare drop than normal drop, if you get 5-star the normal drop chance falls, and the rare drop is multiplied by 5, if you use conossoir catalog, it rises the rare drop chance(5% X 5 stars = 25% + 50% of the catalog =37,5% rare drop) and the normal drop falls from 25% to 18 % if you uses the catalog or 5 star, if you get 4 star and use the catalog for normal drop it rises to 37,5% and if you use both catalogs, rare 28% normal 55%(5 stars).
This is why I'm glad that I havn't done the last missions yet. Farming traps and Ingots is such a walk in the park when you dont need to face the upgraded versions of them. When I have the money I need for all the upgrades and the "every item" achievement, I'm gonna finish the mission for that last Long gui achievement :D Great tactic though bro!
@Nyxlave Nevermind. I just found out that there's a Synthesis ability that allows you to absorb 1% of the damage you deal: Vampire Strike. Just equip any combination of four Cherub's Crowns or Seraph's Crowns.
Of course, that means no Gengi Glove, so it still limits you to healing yourself for a maximum of 1,000 per hit, and that's only if you hit for 99,999.
it's easy to prevent from fainting after using roar that could daze you... just buy foul liquid... even though you are dazed you could still use items... and during doing such act, you should also switch paradigms to tortoise to lessen the damage of either ultima or stomp.. either way, after the attack all of your members are "undazed",. and switch to medic as soon as possible. XD

if you spawn Long Guis ... the lower level turtles/dinosaurs still spawn in Northern Highlands and Eden ... Or, you can simply redo the Cieth mission that requires you to kill an Adamantoise that will earn you a Gold Nugget (worth 60,000) AND a possibility of a Ingot which totals 210,000 gil (150K for Ingot + 60K for Nugget = 210K gil). Hope that helps. Spam death on them, you do 999,999 damage PER cast with Vanille if properly equipped.
@gudyleila you also can warp back to Eden plaza where there is an Adamantoise/thart (one of the two) and a save point. Save -> Kill -> Save -> Reload

The Commander's special attack is used for damaging. Which means the attack will deal the most when the enemy's chain % is at 999,9 % (you will deal 10 times the damage. but has the con that is will reset the chain. so use it when you know you'll be able to finish the target off
the ravager's special attack is used for building up the chain guage quickly to 999,9 % (10 x dmg). these skills does multiple hits. I believe Sazh does the most ammounts of hits (15)

@jrconjux its because the formula of normal drop is (100% - rare drop) X 25%, so less stars more normal drop, the best way to get less stars, is by rising the target time, but to rise the target time you need maxed characters and highest level for weapons, and for ascessory like kaiser knuckles and to obtain this you need money, in another worlds platinum ingot.
But even like this the target time is still high, and a bay combo.
if wanna the trophy, there's other way to obtain.

This battle was the ultimate in smart paradigm decks, and timing your paradigm switches perfectly. If someone didn't have this nailed R.I.P. lol
Aside from these turtles battles being fun, it's a shame the drop rates are so awful. They should have made this battle have 100% trap and 100% platinum ingot drop 😅
With Com-buffering Death you can kill Long Gui in one stagger.
With a very advanced Fang you can also kill Long Gui in one stagger, but Vanille needs much less investment than Fang.
you can also inflict slow first thing on long gui itself in the beginning to slow down the time between the stomps. and instead of infiltration espionage might be a good idea to keep buffs up. all the same though.

So Ill stick with the Adamantoise/Tortoise until I have the gil to upgrade most of it... I will still need Dark Matter to top the acessories, so ill have to unleash the beasts before getting the treasure hunter trophy XD

@VegeXP Their default drop rate of Traps is 5X that of regular Adamantoises. 25% chance if you 5 star it.
@LividLeon You get a 6th Atb bar for equipping a Tier 3 weapon. (One you make with Trapezohedrons).

Great and easy guide, would say almost foolproof. Did it first try with maxed Chrystarium, low tier 2 weapons, some random gear. Even did a mistake by doing a highwind in the middle of the second stagger, but finished him/her/it with a 3rd highwind in the end of the second down. =D thanks mate.
@jrconjux it depends if its on adamantoises or adamantortoises, because rare drop is only 1% 5 stars with both catalogs is 36% 3-4 stars about 43% 0-2, about 50% or a bit more, but in any case the chances are still small, if you wants the trophy the only itens you need to buy are 5 adamantites, and 5 darkmatter, gains about 2,5 million gil and sell all of your equipaments, except the ones you need to upgrade buy these itens, upgrade, then go talk to bhakti.

Ah, one more thing, did you try to start the battle with the paradigm "Rapid Growth" and then change it immediately in "Tortoise"? It give you the chance to set haste to everyone right away!
@stefsve Oh, by the way: Lightnings Axis Blade Omega Weapon is super sick for the usage of Special attack, since each hit slightly restores ATB. I haven't tried it myself yet. but I believe half your ATB should be restored by the end of the special attack. Good weapon for spamming Army of One
@Devilangelofsky sentinels role level passive ability is that they take less damage so by switching to tortoise everyone takes less damage.
If your still farming for Plat Ignots, activating the Long Gui and Shaolong Gui wont really matter since the Adamantoise in Eden will still be there (IMO best place). Since you can just kill, save, quit, kill etc.

@gudyleila yeah, they still drop them but they take a lot longer to kill (and are more difficult). I would stick with the adamantoise until you upgrade/buy most of your stuff
You should manually cast Bravery/Faith buffs on everyone when in the Rapid Growth paradigm, because the AI automatically does defensive buffs (Protect, Shell, etc.).
@stefsve Not too good of an idea. The final form of the Axis Blade (Omega Weapon LV Star) only gives 315 more for strength and magic, which is extremely weak. I would recommend the Gladius, or probably even better, the Lionheart.
For the people who asked kaiser knucles is the evolution of power gloves with dark matter(but i don't remember where to get power gloves =x)
There is still one Adamantoice in Archylte Steppe so don't worry. They don't drop platinum ingots very often so it doesn't matter. There is also another Adamantoice at leviathan plaza :)
@jrconjux even at 28% rare, 55% normal, the rare drop still get in the way, the best way to obtain the normal drop is to gain 2 or less stars, this way the rare drop falls to 0%, and the normal drop gains priority, however one of the hardest things in this game is to obtain 0 stars against these oretoises, because you are either too weak and relies on Death, or too strong and finishes the battle too fast, in either case you end up with 5-stars, take too long and you die with a bay combo.
@562AsianGuy mayhaps, but there's only a 1% chance of getting a trap from the adamntoise, where as I think you get a 25% chance from these guys.

@lacores210 Yeah, but it takes forever to go back and forth. Just equip a Conneisure Catalog on someone, and kill Shaolong Gui's all day. Dark Matter AND Gold Nugget farming. It just makes more sense.

Name one RPG, where final boss is harder than optional bosses. lol It's the template. Every RPG (that has post-game content) have optional bosses that are harder than the final boss. Either way, it's actually easy to 5* Long Gui. Whereas in Orphan fight you need to be very fast to get a 5*.

what i dont understand is why light gets destroyed by ultima compared to fang/van? i use the same party and she always gets rocked by it, i would have thought she was a superior sentinel compared to vanillie at least. is it tied to the magic stat becasue i have a maxed mag crest and maxed bella donna wand on van and fang has decent magic level 2k+ iirc.

I already have 3 maxed Tier 3 weapons, but I need to upgrade the other 3 AND all the accesories, since I used all my gil to upgrade weapons first...

@JellonaOO7 no BUT if tha stagger thing is at 999.9 then vanilles death will do 999,999 damage
its a pretty cheap but effective strategy to do it this way

Best and fastest place getting trapez is still Adamantoice because you will get also platinum ingots. Yes, drop rate is lower, but you need millions of gils too if you want platinum trophy.

But you really don't need it if you are low level. When there is Adamantoises, you can easilly kill them for Platinum Ingots and selling that, its easiest way to upgrade weapons. All Adamantoises disappears when Long Gui is walking there. Then you need to go all the way in Eden Hall.
why are some people saying to switch to cerebus after using death with vanille?

Cerebus has 3 Commando, and a paradigm with Commando deals more damage. With Genji Gloves (plus high magic accessories like Magistral Crest/Weirding Glyph) using Death -> switching to Cerebus can pull up the damage to 999,999 during stagger.
Don't know if you still respond to comments, but is it possible to change the long guis back into adamantoise's / is there somewhere still good for farming adamtoise/tortoises after you've done those cieth missions?

@orochi222 *facepalm* the same item's don't stack, connoiseur and collector catalog are different items, yes one is just the upgraded form, but they are still different items. so hence that is false.
Although there are many detailed drop logs saying its better to just equip the collectors catalog and nothing else.
@drkcrstl When he's standing his resistances are very high indeed. But if I'm not mistaken I believe you can still debuff him with slow and stuff.
Just got to grand pluse and i feel so overwhelmed by the amout of difficulty im experiencing i see ppl clock in over 100 hours playing ff13 but i think i might just beat the game and at least do the cactur mission beating a long gui wont be on my agenda , tbh beating the fal'cie berthanlus was hell for me took me 18 minutes just awful and the triple battles at grand pluse with those overpowered behemoths vs the lobos are sheer hell like hope said. Edit i take it all back im one of those ppl who played ff13 fully lmfao

just a quick question...why do you use vanille instead of Hope? Hope's magic stat is much better.
Would it be better to use Sazh instead of Lightning? Light likes to melee a lot and when you're close to the leg when it stomps you take an extra hit. Sazh always hits from a range, but he's also the only one who doesn't have reprieve (retain 1 hp when a killing blow lands). Guess I should try it out.
why is it that in my game, my buffs wear out faster and the long gui is faster?! i mean, wtf?!
musicmaniack256. You must be using the ra versions of spells like. Bravera instead of bravery. They are better but dont last as long

while long gui is up or lain on the ground his resistance to physical and magic ataks are high right ?
These fights would look a lot different if they implement the FFXIII-2 gameplay where you can only use the limit break move once during a battle lol
@calahoon22 Being a sentinel automatically reduces the damage that you and your party members take, even without a guard ability.
Wait a sec, you have maxed out all characters, six Kaiser Knuckles and a Migistral Crest total (seven Dark Matters to make), and all your Tier 3 weapons (at least three Trapezohedrons), with a play time of 95 hours? How did you pull that off? I just maxed my characters, I got five Dark Matters just to get the items that require them (one each), and I still need one more Trapezohedron. I STILL have a TON of farming to do. I am currently at 105 hours and going. How did you do it so quickly?

Fuck, I completed the Cieth stone circle missions without realizing that Long Guis would replace the Adamantoises and Shaolong Guis would replace the weaker ones and I still need more CP points! I'm pretty much fucked for leveling now.
+IF You can farm the one in Eden until you get the cp you need.

+IF in the archylte steppe there is an adamanthart but only one. the others are shaolonggui and longgui. but you can recognize the adamanthart because it has white horns. just use vanille and death

Buy Power glove and upgrade to kaiser knuckles then upgrade it to get +300 to strength PER knuckle. :p

There are three, from Attacus (Titan mission), Adamantortoise and Raktavija (both are missions of cie'th stone circle)
If you have completed all the missions, you should have three Genji Gloves.

Somewhat good strategy. Except to get Lightning to cast Enfire. That was a real pain in the ass. I know Imperil has to be stuck on the beast but still Lightning just wouldn't cast Enfire. I even stayed on syn/syn/syn and just watched her do nothing. Did you have any consistency with this strategy? Any idea on the Enfire problem?
+TropicalTendencies You probably need to cast Libra on the Gui once to get Lightning to cast the spell.
Without Imperil she won't cast Enfire, so your priority should be to cast Imperil and let the others cast the other debuff.
You know what this game is missing? A Blood Blade. We need a weapon with the ability Damage Enemy: Heal.
