did this commute for a while back in the 00s, it was great because usually there was barely anyone else was on the road. i loved taking the turns at a safe speed under the speed limit 😉 this was where i first realized how much i like driving. i'm too cowardly now to drive like that again lol, but i'm glad i can watch this at 1.4x speed and remember older times. thanks for recording and sharing this memory.
My first time along 17 was wayyy back in 1975 on my Honda 450! Back then 17 was largely a 'grooved concrete' narrower road- fast and dangerous. Yet its still nostalgic to see the 'fog' as you came down the west side of the mountains- as today I'm back living in 'boring Connecticut.
I am looking likely to finish my MS thesis early, but found out after most applications closed. UCSC was first university I visited and loved it, and luckily it was accepting applications. I’m in the middle of applying. I want to live in Los Gatos to recruit a tech cofounder from Stanford CS PhD for an edtech startup while I pursue my own PhD in physics. I started to wonder about a week ago, what is the drive like on the 17 from Gatos to UCSC? I decided to search Google today. Perfect timing, thank you! I was considering going to NorCal to see the drive. Looks amazing.
Highway 17 is a beautiful drive. But only the passengers can enjoy the views more because the driver really has to concentrate on that winding, hilly highway. My husband and I drove on 17 in late February this year. We were visiting Monterey for a few days, and then later we drove to Santa Cruz for the afternoon, we heard there was going to storm, it was so windy in Santa Cruz so that cut our day short and we already had plans to go to San Francisco. By the time we got on the 17, it rained all the time we were on the 17. It was my second time on that highway. It was scary for me, but my husband has been on the 17 a few more times, so he knows it well, and of course, he drove safely. Some people drove faster while it was pouring rain, passing around other drivers, crazy people. Some people just love to drive faster in the rain and weave in and out of traffic. It was a weekday, so it was surprisingly a lot of cars that day. There's a lot of places I want to stop and see but it was too rainy. Maybe another time in the summer. IN 1969 THERE WAS NO OVERPASS AT SUMMIT, YOU JUST TURNED LEFT!
IN OCT. 1989 ROAD WAS CLOSED APROX 3 MO. DUE TO EARTHQUAKE.
