It could be interesting to test the maximum speed and torc to this motor and compare it with a normal motor with a DC brushless one, for the same amount of power.

Friction makes less efficient than an AC motor straight to the power train.

Very nice and fun to watch the assembly. May I ask, when you were putting the initial cam lobes on, how did you know which way to orient them?
Thank you. I was wondering if assembly job deserved to take place in a video. It could be a boring time for those who only want to watch the engine running.
As for the cam angle setting, both camshafts hold flat spots on which cam fixing screws stand. Each flat spot is machined on the right angle so each coil is powered on the right time order.

Wait a minute, I thought a w motor has 4 cylinder-rows? Or is it both still called w motor? 3 and 4 rows?
There's no real rules, i think. There's 4 raws on Bugatti W16 engine. To my eyes, it's more a double V8, but it can also be called W16. This solenoid engine has 3 raws with 6 "cylinders" each and it's a W shaped concept, till a new and more convenient letter is added in our alphabet...

Very simple : the front lever controls the distance between camshafts and micro-switch sliding raws. The shorter it is, the higher the speed rises.
Thanks so only cam based then, was not sure if voltage was being controlled also. Would love to build one of these, if only my cad designing abilities were stronger...

A program ?
You mean you want to control your engine with an arduino ? No need ! A solenoid engine can run without electronic system. This one uses 2 camshafts + 18 switches.

Ce qui serait intéressant, ce serait d'avoir la puissance en sortie pour connaître les pertes dues aux frottements.
Il y a surement plein d'autres pertes (ex : le fait que se soit des bobines, timing utilisé non optimal, ...)

A single stroke motor. ?
I chose a 4 stroke cycle to be as close as possible to a real gas engine. Each coil is activated every 2 crankshaft revolution. I'd be possible as well to make a 2 stroke cycle. Output power would be higher. Just a choice...
Unfortunately, this kind of solenoid only works in one direction : under tension, the coil sucks the core inside and keeps it in place till it's off. The coil is not able to push the core out.

Je ne sais pas. Il faudrait un appareil genre mini-dyno pour mesurer le couple. Je réfléchis là-dessus, on verra bien si j'ai une idée.

Je n'ai encore aucun récepteur mécanique à ateler à mes moteurs. Je ferai sans doute un système de treuil pour soulever une masse variable. Peut-être l'année prochaine.

It can work.
Here is the thing, the greater magnet strength the greater the force, the lesser energy is needed.
It is the opposite of a fuel engine.

I assume there's reverse connected diodes across each coil for voltage spike suppression. Might be an improvement to use hall effect switches instead of mechanical ones.

Hall switches i saw seems too big to be used in such a small engine. Anyway, i like to see camshafts job and mechanical switch noise is part of the sound.
@@WalterCoulede Hall switches come in very small packages more than suitable for this project plus are more reliable and accurate. I also think that contact bounce could be an issue.
I have to agree with you on the visible workings however. Seeing moving parts work was why you built it after all.

Ca ne sert à rien. C'est juste pour le plaisir de concevoir et créer des mécaniques "vivantes". Satisfaire l'oeil et l'oreille. Un simple jouet pour un vieil enfant.

Avec ses 18 bobines, c'est évidemment le plus coupleux de ma collection de moteurs à électro-aimants. Mais ce n'est pas un monstre de force pour autant.

L'essence, et tous les carburants liquides, ont un très haut potentiel énergétique par rapport à leur masse. C'est pourquoi les constructeurs privilégient les moteurs à combustion interne : puissance et faible masse embarquée. Les électro-aimants linéaires ont un très mauvais rendement. A puissance absorbée égale, on a de moins en moins de force disponible à mesure que le noyau est sorti de sa bobine, ce qui n'est pas top pour faire un moteur à bielle/vilebrequin. Mes moteurs sont condamnés à de faibles puissances et à un rendement désastreux. Mais ils sont fiables et fonctionnent facilement, en silence et sans faire de saleté. 😊

A mes yeux, la puissance en bout d'arbre ou le rendement global n'ont aucune sorte d'intérêt. Reste le plaisir de faire.

No. This one requires too much time machining and getting parts sanded by hand. Price would be too high because of time spent making each.
