I'm a Scrounger. Have been for 65 years and see no end to my scrounging in the foreseeable future. I've turned my wife into a Scrounger as well, whenever she goes for a walk Ann always brings home nuts bolts or washers that she picks up along the road. Sometimes she even brings back tools like a 50-psi diaphragm air compressor, "Is this any good dear?" "You betcha honey!" I have a lot of boxes and cans full to the brim of stuff that I continually "mine for gold" whenever I do a project. I would love to figure out how much money in time and materials I have saved over the years. Great video Doug amazing organizational skills, thumbs up.

I can relate. I’ve built from chicken coops, to fix, fabricate, brackets, for washing machines, truck alternators… for friends that don’t have spendable income out of free hardware, that I’ve managed to get for free.
I had a Porsche shop, where I restored vintage Porsche cars, I built custom kit cars. I’ve built off road race cars, I was a fabricator for Carol Shelby. You have to love what you do.

For the longer pipes & flat bar material I would attach a small lip-shelf to the side of the toolbox and store them vertically. That way you still have them handy and they're too short to be stored with the long/full length stuff. Thanks for the vid this was great!!

  • @lowslow3612
    @lowslow3612 Рік тому +3

Dude. Yes. Thank you for posting this! My wife thinks I'm crazy about organizing, but it's not crazy. It's sane. A disorganized shop is what's crazy!
I did this same thing about a decade ago with my sheetmetal (aluminum, stainless, titanium, and copper), rubber, lexan, and HDPE stock. I didn't use HF cabinets, but it's the same idea.
I also got some small cube-shaped flex-a-top containers from LAContainer and sorted and labeled all of my hardware (rivets, screws, bolts, nuts, washers, nutplates, etc) and filled the drawers of another cabinet with them.
It took me six tool cabinets for everything, but it cleaned up the shop, opened up bench space, and has greatly reduced the amount of time I used to spend looking for stock and hardware.
My cabinets aren't on wheels. I arranged them side-side (3 boxes/side) and back-back, but left a space of maybe 12"-18" (I'd have to measure because I don't remember exactly right now) between the back-backs so they are basically two rows of three boxes, parallel, and back to back to each other. Then I covered the top of both cabinets and the space between with two layers of 3/4 inch plywood, and covered that with a sacrificial 1/4 inch fiberboard that gets replaced when it starts to look too worn and beat up. Since the top covers everything, it looks cohesive, like it's one piece of shop furniture.
I also made a long narrow cart on wheels that holds my large and long pieces of sheetmetal. That sheetmetal is stored vertically in the cart. That cart is stored in the open area between the backs of the tool cabinets. It's easy to pull out when I need more material than what I have in the drawers.
Anyhow, cool video! You are an excellent communicator and your camera shots are always perfect. I enjoyed watching this.

Love your organization and 6S videos! Visual management at it's best.
Coming from a machining background we had 3 storage methods. A steel rack that held from 20'+ to 10', then a vertical rack(half an A frame) that held 10' to 3' sticks, on the back of the vertical rack were shelves that held 3' to 1', then a flat shelf system similar to what you are doing with the tool box that held 1' and under. As the pieces got shorter we moved the location of that stick accordingly.

Doug, great job with that! I work in wood and have a similar compulsion, like you, around organization. I established, one, organized space for cut offs/shorts. I also have one bin for scrap. Then I established a firm rule for myself. When I finish a job, I put my cut offs in the shorts rack. If it won’t fit, something has to go into the scrap bin. When the scrap bin is full, it gets purged for kindling. In the end, I have controlled, limited space for shorts and scrap that doesn’t grow and I stay organized. There is a clip on it in my workshop tour video.
Another thought would be to replace the doors under that counter with drawers. Make them sturdy and use full extension drawer glides. 100 pound per drawer may do, or you could go with file cabinet glides that will surely do.
I REALLY enjoy you videos. Your skills, workflow and organization habits are great. But equally, I like how your creative, problem solving brain works!

Wow! You & I are two peas in a pod. First off I applaud your choice of Harbor Freight boxes. I worked 45 years in parts at Cummins. I saw every conceivable tool storage options you could imagine. I will say this truck boxes are way over priced. Our shop foreman wanted a P.O. For a bunch of Matco tool carts. They were over a grand a piece. I told him you need to go to HF and look at the 5 drawer tool carts. Then the were about 150.00 each. He went and came back with 6 of them for the shop. He laughed and said I got these 6 for the price of 1 Matco cart. I also like the fact that all HF boxes have drawers that are hemmed on the top, or rolled over. No sharp edges like my MAC box or a Craftsman. I have a HF side box I hung on the side of my tool cart. The large bottom drawer has two slides on each side. You’d think my MAC box would, nope. So needless to say I am totally sold on HF boxes. When I unloaded my HF box, I did the same thing you did. Since I’m a bit OCD, I took the other corner protectors, cut them to fit and slid one piece under the front & back edges between the wheels. I taped them up to hold them in place, then I ran my ratchet straps around them. I placed the straps right next to the wheels on both ends so there was no interference with the tail gate. I’m not sure if you solved the rest of your storage for you metal? I think HF has 15% off this weekend on tool boxes. You could snag a top box and put all you light weight tubing in it, key stock, marking tool or small cutoff tools for metal whether hack saws, rotor cut off wheels, supplies etc. the nice thin is it’s all mobile now, at least in that part of the shop. It looks like you’ve really freed up some room in that corner. Maybe you could do a video on what you might do with that space now. Will you store your never roller cabinet over by the garage door? Also what type of brand if your labeler? See you in the next installment. Have a super week friend! Jim (Iowa)

These USG toolboxes are surprisingly well made. While I don't use as a professional, I do use them most everyday. I have several different sizes. They have one that is an open bin at the bottom and lift top that is one of my favorites and it held up well traveling a lot of times to the track. These all have HD wheels, the door slides operate pretty smoothly, and the drawers hold a lot of weight. Some of the snobs will grimace as they must have Snap-On, but you can put a lot of tools in the boxes with the money you saved. I bought a Craftsman Professional toolbox about 20 years ago (when they actually had some nice tools) for about $2300 that is the size of a refrigerator. HF didn't exist then. I think the USGs are about on par with those at less than half the cost. I have four of the USGs now, five if you include two that are stacked. They are a very good value. Keep your eyes peeled for sales and coupons, They do them enough that you can almost never pay their normal full price.

I've used shallow metal drawer cabinets similar to 4" tall filing cabinet drawers with rollers for scraps for many years. Long stock went into storage racks that sorted it all out into 2'-4+' pieces and the other was 5'-8' with longer stock in a ceiling mounted rack. I also split up aluminum and steel as well as having another drawer for brass & copper exclusively. In my wood shop, I only save small pieces of hardwoods and separate them by species but they're in a bucket. Long stock goes into PVC pipes of varying lengths all around the ceiling. The automotive shop has parts in boxes or loose sitting on shelves or on hangers in the loft space while consumable materials are in an old toolbox much like how you.ve set up your yellow one. The automotive electronics consumables and supplies are in their own toolbox at the electronics workstation. The other tradesman tools and materials are in one room/bay combining Electrician, Plumber and Masonry on different walls as well as ceiling storage for the long pieces. Likewise for drywall, painting and staining tools and materials in their own climate-controlled bay.
Good luck with you lifelong endeavor to maintain organization of your own. It never ends until you throw things away.

When the house renovations are complete, the multi trade bays will be a new home for the backhoe, skid steer and a couple of trailers. When they're not needed, The space will probably become an indoor pool space. There are too many predators in the woods for a lot of exposed outdoor facilities. I keep the outdoor kitchen behind a sliding glass wall to keep out the bears etc.

Great video, the last video I saw of yours is when your neighbour filmed your workshop. That inspired me enough to suspend all projects in my workshop until it was organised. That was four weeks ago and we’re still going but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Im lucky to have my wife to help me as she is a born declutterer but that can be a double edged sword as anything that doesn’t have a home is destined for the bin so I have to keep my eyes pealed.
Steel prices are crazy in Australia too so I’m reluctant to throw any away. I built some undercover racks out the back of my workshop for long lengths, I have a set of 4’ deep racks for shorter pieces and 5 gallon square plastic tubs cut in half length ways for the smaller stuff.
Im thinking a set of metal map or plan draws might work, they’re normally about 6’ x 4’ but the draws are only 2” tall.
You could sit another toolbox on top of your yellow one for the even more metal storage.
Cheers mate, and thanks for the inspiration. Stuart 🇦🇺

I had faith you could get it out alone until I saw you standing on that piece of cardboard. THAT was dangerous and you are very lucky it remained under your feet!
I have 4 of those toolboxes. I made a modification to 3 of them because they hold a LOT of tools. What I did was, got a piece of angle iron long enough to run completely front to back and wide enough to cover the rivnuts the casters bolt to but not tall enough to interfere with the bottom drawers. Something like 2"×4"×the length. I drilled out where the rivnuts are, used washers to equal the rivnut height then ran a nut onto every castor bolt. That makes a HUGE difference. Those 3 also have the top box. With several drawers fully open and loaded (a LOT of weight) it has never hinted at tipping forward. If you don’t beef up the suspension but you do fill it full with heavy stuff you're asking an awful lot of the bottom sheet metal. Good luck.

Great ideas. I've been lucky to find a few tall commercial file cabinets at the local Habitat restore for $15 a piece. Actually, two of them were $5 a piece because they had a couple of broken handles. I don't need anyting pretty (that said, the Rust-Oleum spray paint cost more than the file cabinets) 😁 I just need something that will hold stuff
They're fairly deep, and the rollers on these are good.
Instead of keeping all my tools in my van, or carport, I put them into the file cabinets. Routers are in one, angle grinders are in another, etc.
I got my pile of scrap metal too and I think since I don't use that kind of stuff very often the lower drawers would work good for that kind of storage. I've been searching the internet for ideas like yours, great stuff. 👍

Hi Doug, maybe if you put some hooks or on the outside ends. Then you can add some appropriate PBC Tubing (Capped at One End) or baskets, then you can store your flat metal pieces or you could hang them on the hooks or in the tubes without having to cut them.

i’m a retired Professinal Woodworker and we often have the same issues with CutOffs from our Exotic Lumbers , there are always tons of little projects I can find with all those CutOffs i do admit the discount on the Yellow Boxes is a nice deal but IMO that is a ButtvUglybColor i do think i personally would Respray one if i did take advantage of buying one at the reduced price FYI. i do own the Painting Equipment to do so and i have sprayed Automobiles etc oh BTW Harbor Freight does sellS ratch and Dented ToolBoxes they are listed on a Website simply called Harbor Freight Scratch and Dent , as far as Tool Boxes they do see to have decent discounted Icon brand Tool Boxes more than the US General lines for some reasons IDK Why ? those. you can have shipped to your address or store of your choice

Now you have a mobile winch point to use in your parking lot. I do something similar. It's important to periodically go through and recycle some of it like you are doing as well. Good work!

( I bought another Craftsman tool box recently....I've started buying 20 and 30 year old boxes. I was wondering if I should use it or try to preserve its great condition. Your video made me realize I have some tools I actually want to pass along to others, they can go into a mint condition box. (Less use, and a space organizer idea)). tHanks for the video!

I’ve got three of their toolboxes, two the 26” size - in YELLOW. I happen to really like the yellow. I don’t know why it’s less popular. My ESAB welder is yellow. My DeWalt tools are yellow. My dock lights are yellow (I use them to help light my big lathe and mill). Caterpillar is yellow as are a number of other heavy equipment machines. It helps brighten up the shops.
Ever since the tariffs were raised by 25% several years ago, metal has been constantly rising. I’m paying more than twice what I was paying in 2016, sometimes even more. It seems as though manufactures here, who were whining about foreign metal being less that what they were charging, and so taking market share, immediately raised prices by more than the tariffs as soon as they were raised. Bigger executive bonuses, I expect.
Never cut metal down just to store it. Never do that. You will always need a piece an inch longer than you cut it.

Your scrap steel/aluminium storage prior to the toolbox is at least an order of magnitude better organised than mine. Mine just gets tossed into a spread out pile outside my shed door and I rat through it when I need a bit of steel.
