2022 Kia Stinger | Stinging Only Once?

- Опубліковано 30 вер 2021
- I can’t believe it’s already closing in on 5 years since I was sitting at the Detroit Auto Show watching the much heralded debut of Kia’s rear-wheel drive sporty hatchback; a luxurious, performance model who’s development was overseen by a former BMW M engineer. And now for its first and apparently last refresh the 2022 Stinger receives updated styling, better electronics and more safety tech.
MSRP as-tested: $55,655

I own a 2018 GT2 AWD. Was thinking of upgrading to the 2022 Scorpion Edition Stinger but the one I have is still so amazing. Great review.
Underrated car. Great review and solid insight. Thanks Steve
Thanks!
Kia loyalist here, I have the k900 with same engine..great car
they make it with a V6?
@@dare2sk 2019 and 2020 k900 could only get twin turbo v6
@@davidd1692 damn, you are lucky in the states. we dont even have that model here in EU
@@dare2sk well we no longer get it here. 2020 was last year
Pretty sure this car in 20 years will be a classic
It's not possible! All Hyundai/Kia does is copy&paste the Germans, so why should a fake copy become a classic?
The Scorpions copy&pasted American hard rock in Germany and they're considered classic.
Rock is a genre, no need to copy! Design however starts from scratch! Lack of imagination makes you eye other design patterns and before you know it you have copied the original! Out of the fake world of design rises the brand Kia/Hyundai.
@@mikealanzo 2022 Kia Stinger Scorpion Special Edition. It all comes full circle.
@@mikealanzo The jealousy is real. Don't worry in 20 years your AMG will be in the junkyard...
If you can have only one car, but need a real Swiss Army knife, for under $50k, this is a great choice
This vehicle along with the Telluride are amazing swan songs to end Kia’s ICE history and to be a perfect apology for how Kia came into the American market.
This is an outstanding Stinger review and by far the best on UA-cam. Very informative and delivered at perfect pace. Superb camera angles. Well done
Thank you!
Steve is the absolute best reviewer and this is indeed the best GT2 AWD review online. In fact, I implicitly trusted Steve so much that I took delivery of my 2022 GT2 AWD Panthera Metal/Red Nappa sight unseen when the dealer dropped it off. Absolutely love it, never looked back. Thanks Steve!
I was waiting for this review from you! This exact car, trim, and color combo is what I’m planning on buying the end of the year. I had a reso for the updated model S but Tesla jacked up the price $20k more only 2 months after it was released, so stinger it is. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed 🙂
Yessss go for the Stinger!! I really hope more people can buy it so Kia keeps the Stinger alive! And yes, you won't be disappointed :D
I’m buying exact same set up
Excellent review, Steve. Unfortunately, you weren't able to go into detail as to why "the biggest news revolves around the base GT-Line" (1:09) of the Stinger. With the corporate 2.5L turbo 4 cylinder that KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis are offering in at least 9 separate models, the 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds is only about half a second slower than the GT2 version. Fully loaded with the "Sun and Sound" package that provides a sunroof and the upgraded audio system available in the upper trims, the AWD GT-Line has an MSRP of $40,590. That's more than $14,000 less (!) than the GT2 with virtually the same amenities and about 230 lbs less curb weight, all over the front wheels. In fact, the GT-Line base model is a significantly superior alternative to the FWD only KIA K5 GT for only a few thousand dollars more. As such, it's a screaming bargain.
I'd have only one small quibble with your characterization of the Stinger as a "sports sedan." That's certainly an accurate categorization of the Stinger's cousin, the Genesis G70 that's clearly aimed at to compete with the BMW 3 series but to me the Stinger is more properly seen as a GT (Gran Turismo) sedan in the European tradition. A 4 door sedan designed to transport 4 adults and their gear in comfort at 3 digit mph speeds over meticulously maintained highways as well as to navigate winding secondary roads, many of which were originally laid down by the Romans two millennia ago.
It is sad to see the Stinger disappear so soon. But KIA, like other automakers, has seen the writing on the wall suggesting that high performance cars propelled by ICE engines are dinosaurs compared to the forthcoming crop of EVs. Consider that the Mustang Mach-E is outselling every other Mustang variant. The Camaro will soon disappear to be replaced by an EV with coupe-like styling. Even Stellantis has indicated the Charger/Challenger will be electrified within a couple of years.
You're undoubtedly correct that if a vehicle like the Stinger is appealing, it's best not to "linger." Soon, it and most of its competitors will be gone.
I've got a 2020 gt2, same color combo. Great vehicle, fast, handles well, seats are great like you said and mileage actually is a little better, im usually around 25 combined. Shame no one buys these. They aren't perfect, but definitely feels like a special vehicle.
Excellent review. In Australia we only get the RWD. I have the 2020 top of the rage GT here in Oz and I absolutely love it. Best car I have ever owned and I have had some fantastic cars in the past.
When all things are considered such as bang for buck, standard equipment, performance, driving experience, price and warranty, there is nothing close to it in my opinion. An equivalently specced German model costs twice as much here in Oz.
Still not a fan of that grey as it reminds me of an undercoat. To each their own I guess.
Steve from Oz
Will say enthusiast will definitely miss the Stinger when the announce an official discontinue.
The exact color combo I ordered, can't wait.
The new Kia badge 2022 model Stinger hasn't arrived in Australia as yet.
Bierman was the former head of BMW's M division. Not quite just an engineer.
Steve great vlog, thank you, I've made my choice and it's the GT 2 Scorpion Edition, I was about to go w/the Acura TLX Type S, but Kia gives you so much more plus that great warranty, my only issue is that's it's only Oct and i was told it won't be here till Feb, Can't wait.......
Good choice!
Beautiful review.
Thank you!
You don't kill a Halo car even if it's about to become a dinosaur with a petrol engine.
I think once the used car market levels out a cpo one of these will be a great value
The stinger will be the next “Supra effect” after Toyota canceled the Supra, people wanted it! Now it’s a collectors car way too expensive to buy now. When it was around, people didn’t buy them. Better get it if you can.
I love your profile name 🤣🤣🤣, I definitely agree champ, finally got my hands on one
No plans to stop production of their halo car
I have just spent two months with my new GT-Line and, like all Stinger owners, I love the car. It is fast, comfortable and beautiful inside and out. I don't have all the bells and whistles of the GT but I don't seem to miss them. I did modify the car by getting a license plate that says STINGRR and now the car is even faster. Ceramic silver and red seats are the way to go.
What type of gasoline do you put in the gt-line?
@@zackcohen9949 It runs just fine on regular.
Just got that same color combination, the best IMO!. Local dealer[s] finally came off MSRP or MSRP +, actually got mine for $38330 w sun and sound plus set of mats. [MSRP $43330] . Enjoy!
@@markdavenport8737 My favorite modification is the red carpets I bought for the car. Enjoy!
@@stephenjablonsky1941 Brilliant! My only stylistic mod is a 'Stinger' rear plate frame. Never thought of the red carpet thing. That's a great move. I only added the [black] all weather rubber mats to go with the carpeted ones.
I have a RWD GT, it’s easily controllable if you take all the nannies off and put it in sport then it really gets to cut loose
Steve never fails to sneak the word "replete" somewhere into his reviews!
Way too much! You’re right. 😂
he is right on rear wheel drive. I have just bought a new stinger in UK which has no awd option, the power is so fierce the backend twitches a lot and in the wet its worse than a high powered bmw, fun but very fast and twitchy. My biggest complaint is lack of exhaust noise, the so called variable valve in sports mode makes no sound difference at all. Guess you need 4rd party exhaust system
Agree about the back end slipping out. I notice it whenever I take off from a set of lights and have to do a turn immediately.
No issue on a highway though at speed.
Sadly the diffrence between an AWD and the RWD is a lot.I have a 2020 AWD and so glad I got the AWD.Not only does it not twitch--but you can take long hi speed turns and other turns very fast and the car stays flat. The car with AWD is also fantastic in bad weather.I probably will always get an AWD car after experiencing it.Also if you take the time to go thru the settings--you can turn an AWD car into a much better track car then a RWD.One magazine complained about bad track times on an AWD Stinger and when i froze the video at one point--they were in comfort mode--there is a HUGE diffrence in performance between the 2 settings.I plan on getting slightly wider tires to make the car handle even better.I think that is the only slightly problem area is the tires could be bigger.I also would not take my stinger to a road course--the tires are so low profile that the rim would probably get scraped on the speed barrier humps that are in turns--tires are too narrow and not wide enough.I know why they did it because the 80% of where most folks drive their stinger is perfect--but when pushed you notice some of the downfalls--BTW my Stinger would dut say a car like a Honda type R which i also drove for several days--same problem and the Honda is slower and is FWD making it much worse on a track if stock.
@@khronin We don't get an AWD version here in Oz. I would have loved one as I loved my WRX and the 2 Liberties I had.
Totally agree about driving an AWD in the wet and the safety that comes with it.
Steve from Oz
@@belvederedog2563 I reside in snow free Arizona and have no need for AWD & spending another $2,000. RWD with lsd works for me!
@@cindykeselowski899 Fair enough. I just like AWD for the wet weather conditions but I do love my RWD Stinger.
You live in a beautiful part of the world. Loved driving through there.

KIA Stingers hold Their Resale Value Surprisingly Well!
Unfortunately lol I'm looking to buy one used
If I sell mine now I will make 5 grand lol Its a 2018. We will see if it holds once this crazy car market settles.
It's just the best car ever.
I have the AWD, let me tell you, it will still get sideways on dry pavement with ease, but I 100% agree, much more controllable. If you modify it slightly, you’ll be running 11’s! Insane!
I was sooooo hoping this was going to be the new 4cyl tester. We're paying $4.50/gallon for premium in CA making the V6 really pricey to run.
I have the 2.5L stinger and it’s still plenty quick and beautiful exterior I recommend this car to any car enthusiast
Heck we pay $5.35 for crappy 91 octane north east of the US border... Ironically the Stinger cost more than my Mustang GT fuel wise. Something to keep in mind.
You can afford a $50k car, but can't afford $4.50 gas?
@@crap8011 pretenders usually can't.
Your problem isn't the fuel economy, it's the fact that you live in California!
Damn im thinking i need a 2022 kia stinger, i have the k5 ex
not the last refresh. There will be one more refresh before it is discontinued!
Is this what they call a freezing cold take? 😂
I have a 2019 GT2-- one of the best cars I've ever owned.
Does the G70 handle the same way?
G70 supposed to be better handling. Smaller and lighter with same power
@@BrianJohnson-kh7mg Thanks
Would it have killed you say that the lift gate gives the interior “cabinosity?”
The interior almost looks the same like the new mercedes S550 2017 model
4:18 Ford Taurus?😳
Instead of killing it the KIA should make a Stinger CUV like the GV70
Stinger!
The only problem is their 3.3L gets the same fuel economy as BMW's 4.4L twin turbo V8.
yes, but any BMW product with that 4.4L V8 is going to be far more expensive
@@Alex.AL_26 ... True. I'm just saying that this engine's fuel economy is extremely poor. I feel like they could have done better.
That is totally not true.I drove 2 BMW and they were barely above 10 MPG.I have a 2020 Stinger and I am at 20 to 23 in rural driving--I say rural because it is not exactly city and not exactly HWY.An X6M I looked at and had for a weekend was at 13 MPG--10 MPG less--not even close.Any car with this performance level will get bad gas mileage if you get on it--but BMW V8s drink a lot more gas then the Stingers engine. Our local dealer has a bmw and KIA dealer at the same area and you can turn the cars on and see the fuel mileage--And do not even mention Dodge--thise 392s will see the fule gauge go down while sitting at traffic. But even with a BMW you can turn it on eco mode and get better mileage which is what i do now that i won a Stinger.I leave it in comfort mode except for the one or 2 times a year i goto the track.I even have a picture of my fuel milega on one of my videos after my exhaust was done and my mileage went up--this was almost 200 miles of driving and I was right at 23--including a stint on the HWY where I went between 80 to 90 and was at almost 30 mpg while speeding.
@@khronin .. just look up the EPA gas mileage rating for a m550i with a twin turbo v8. It's the same exact as the Kia stinger GT.
Is this real world economy from real world drivers? I don't have a BMW, but I do have a 3.3 stinger, and honestly the economy isn't bad. To make power first you must burn fuel. If you want to make power in the stinger you burn fuel, if you drive it sensibly I achieve 7.5L/100km on the open road and about 11L/100km driving around my small town. A 25km commute to work is about 8.5L-9L/100km so not shabby all things considered
My previous car was a 4.0L n/a Ford falcon with a 6 speed ZF box, about the same weight as the stinger. Stinger is far more powerful and slightly more economical. Win Win in my book!
Many high performance modern cars seem to do unusually well on the economy tests but real life is a totally different story. The stinger seems to be pretty close to achieving what the official consumption is.
쿠페형과하이브리드 스포츠형이 나와야 한다
And being discontinued
Such a shame this is the last year.
That's not a car, it's a piece of jewelry…! How could Kia discontinue a masterpiece like this, to launch a horrible K5 “in its place”…😏
This didn't age well. Kia have confirmed the stinger isn't going anywhere.
What’s your source?
Kia should make this car even more exotic and not so technological like zie Germans. And increase prices. People will buy it. Down to the features and suspension and engine
In 10 years this will be the next Supra when all you can buy are boring electric cars...
My Audi e tron GT is light years better than this lol it’s hardly boring
