Ford Focus RS vs. ST Comparison

Everyone should know by now that we're working on some pretty awesome performance upgrades for the Ford Focus RS and Focus ST. But what exactly are the differences between the two cars?

Hi Brett, I have an RS and am suffering the dreaded wandering in 4th and 5th gear. Have you experienced it yet? I'd be interested to know what you think is causing it? I'd also like to know how to fix it?

Do you know if the early s-max ecoboost (2010-2015) with the 2.0 engine can be tuned in the same way as the Focus ST?

I'm runnings stage 3/4 upgrades on my tuned 2009 xr5 LV. It has a RS turbo, clutch ect.. when I go to push button start the car It sometimes takes longer to start. Some days it starts in a second and sometimes it will start after 3 seconds hot or cold and even when I turn the accessories on before holding down. Any suggestions to help fix this ? Thanks

Did Australia loosen up their restrictions for mods that affect emissions? I thought they were very strict and that's why mostly 1973 and older cars were being modded.

Hi love you guys doing RnD so quickly. Apparently， quite a lot of RS engine failure problems happened around the world. If you come across one, how do you know whether the failure is associated with your development or the factory design ?

Junyan Liu it’s not as many as you think, it’s the ones manufactured at a certain date which got the Ecoboost Mustangs head gasket (don’t know if accidental or intentional cost cutting).

Brett, what are your feelings with regards to the stock FMIC on the ST? Is it a must upgrade when you start tuning ?

not needed,we have some high load testing on our dyno and looks very good, and we hope to do somemore testing on this and other ideas shortly

the stock intercooler on the ST is garbage. It suffers from heat soak after 1 WOT pull in 3rd gear. Charge temps rise 50-100F!!!!! I have plenty of data to back this up and it is a well known FACT in the ST community. Just saying.

not as big an issue as people think as compared to the failures and the global volume, the % is very very low and we have seen no failures at all

Focus Se is better as long as u just add a turbo and muffler/resonator delete , u basically got yourself a ST lol

very minor, few have suffered and the problem seems worse than it really is.
There was a few that were reported by Ford and since been fixed, (under warranty) overall compared to the thousands sold, this is a little concerning, BUT as a % ,its very small and the car we are testing has had a very hard life (prior to coming to MRT) and has been 100% reliable

RS is a 2.3, not a 2.2. Before mid 2017 they have the wrong design hg, but this may not be the entire story. Ford is rumored to do something about it this year, but it may just be a tsb.

some of the early build focus RS had the wrong head gaskets installed, they were inadvertently assembled with the head gasket from the mustang 2.3 ecoboost which is almost identical but some some coolant passages blocked

Youre probably already aware, but ford has just issued a recall for the RS for replacement of the head gasket.

The focus rs is 2.3 litre the max bhp the rs can take is 550bhp before the engine is crap and the st max bhp is 650 before it's crap the rs engine problems are do to the wrong head gasket and the open deck design is not the best engine for high bhp
