- I live in the upstate of South Carolina and we had an unusually odd winter. Single digits and then warm. Rinse and repeat. In this video, I take a few minutes at the start of my pruning season to show you how I'm dealing with more die back than normal.
Comforting and very helpful. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Thank you! We needed to move a couple of rose bushes because of bad placement on my part and I was so scared that I accidentally killed them. It has been a week and I am starting to see little buds on the canes so hopefully all is well.
If you are seeing little buds you are home free!
You showed some roses that have new growth already - in some cases lots of new growth. So do those not need to be cut back, just let them be?
I trimmed out dead wood but they could be cut if need be. I just like to leave those high.
Thank you so very much brother we appreciate you. And hello from South, Louisiana.
You are very welcome
Thank you so much Paul ❣️ I have been fretting about my Cori roses (what I named my roses)❣️ I have had so many opinions, but yours I trust wholeheartedly just from your great choice of partners 😜❣️
Please hug Pam fur me ❣️
😘
Thank you and will do!
I had to cute back one of my favorite roses just like that.. It's supposed to get really cold again next week.. I have a ton of basal breaks, so I am a little bit worried.
Cold depends on how cold. If it touches freezing not an issue. Even if it drops below for an hour or so that also should not be a problem. If it is going to get really cold you can build a structure around with something like rebar and then cover it with a blanket. Cold wind can also do a lot of damage.
That happens every fifth year or so to my roses here in Norway. The most damaged ones do take some time to start growing, but don’t give up, most of them survive.
Same here. Even the ones that look dead I leave in the ground for a few months until mid summer to see if they grow again.
My roses here in Middle Tennessee look like that. Now I know what to do! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thanks Paul! I bought a Ballerina musk rose from J&P 3 years ago and i was wondering if it's ok to cut her back like that?
Only if you have to. Rose like Ballerina prefer a light trim. Cut out any dead and take it back by about 1/3. If you have lots of dead then you will need to cut hard to get it out.
@@Paulzimmermanroses Paul thanks so much for getting back to me, I'm looking forward to seeing your new videos this season! Take care 🙂👍
omg that John Ford rose! What color is it going to be?
That is Flash Gordon. Single petalled red and white. Lovely rose.
Thank you so much for this video. I am in north Georgia, and also had that extended hard freeze at Christmas. I was really checking my roses today--like you, I have some that look dead but there is a hint of green at the bottom of a cane or two while others are thriving and have no damage at all. This video will help me prune appropriately! Thanks again!
Glad it helped. You are not far from me so not surprised you are seeing the same thing.
