- It is a nice surprise when you have something and realize you can expand the product's functionality.
Such is the case with my HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini PC, which I purchased a few years ago. I was looking through my UA-cam feed and found a video about an AMD Radeon RX560 discrete graphics card with 4 GB of RAM. Yes, I never downloaded and read the manual when I purchased this PC, at which point I would have known this two years ago.
Again, surprises are nice. So I purchased a card and double-checked my power supply to meet the requirements. Yeah, it's a 135 Watt Power SUpply! (On the safe side, I purchased a 150-Watt power supply when pegging over 130 watts during testing.)
If you have this mini pc or are considering purchasing one, I hope you find this an informative video.

It was brought to my attention that the Unigine Heaven numbers weren't correct as the resolutions for each test differed. I reran the test at a 1600 x 900 resolution and graphics improvement was 44%. The discrete graphics test showed the FPS was 45.3 and the score was 1893. The built-in graphics showed the FPS was 31.3 and the score was 1311.
you are a very underated youtuber, i hope your channel blows up later!
For anyone wanting to rush out and buy an Elitedesk G4+. Triple check with the seller. As not everyone has the MXM connector for the GPU on the motherboard.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment and information.
@@heywhatisnext I have a stack of Elitedesks of various kinds. Later versions can even have 2.5GB NICs as their Flex IO card option. Sadly not for a G4. Flex IO is the name of the port you took out to install the GPU. You will want version one if you go looking. As v2 and v3 will not work for you.
35watt models havent
@@Yandarvalthat might solve my problem! My 705 G4 DM won’t recognize the HDMI FLEX IO I installed
Another important thing to consider is the top bezel cover. I bought a 705 g4 with the 2400GE with the goal of doing this. However, my unit came with a solid top. For optimum ventalation, you should try finding one of the mesh tops that are on the 65 or 90w models. The tops from the 800 g4s will work, but if it's not a g4, don't bother. It won't fit.
Thanks for watching and providing this information.
Not sure if it's been said, I'm to lazy to read through the comments, but if you do this, make sure you buy the 150W power supply, the 65W isn't gonna cut it. Also.... getting Linux running on this particular machine was a HUGE pain. so if you don't know much about it, stick to windows.
Thanks for watching and reiterating the need for the higher wattage power supply.
dint know this was possible amazing video
Thanks for watching. Glad you linked the video.
I see Davinci Resolve, i click like
Thank you for watching!
I installed archlinux on mine, but still uses the vega 11 and it works great and quite snappy
If you do don´t forget to install the vaapi for amdgpu.
Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching, and the input on the Linux front. I’m thinking of running Mint on a separate partition.
@@heywhatisnext just do it and install it with EFI bootloader / works best
Very interesting
Thanks for watching.
Vega 11 is quite fast by the integrated standard. 130W with a discrete.. ouch that is a LOT vs max 65 on IGPU and CPU combined. Also watch out for the 35 vs 65 w models. I think that the internal GPU will only work for the 65W models. Also the price of the card has now risen to $75 USD.. and to ship this to my country is another $75 USD.. lol..
Thanks for watching.
I have one doing nothing at the moment. I was debating on getting the gpu for it and install Bazzite OS and see how it does. Its currently running W11, with the help of rufus, just fine.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I should have clarified that there is a way to run Win11, but maybe another video for later :-)
I just bought this little beauty last week. I love how easy it is to work on, unlike other OEM pc models. The only thing I would like to know is if this can be upgraded to a Ryzen 5 2600.
Its not possible the bios does not support it
however i removed the powermangement in bios and cpu boost even higher
Thanks for watching!
@@sphericalcow5258 i did not remove it just disabled it
Would have been useful to see an FPS test in graphics hungry games. I always thought you couldn't buy graphics cards for mini PCs like that, how did you find out it could be upgraded and how did you know what physical dimensions of card to look for? Is this the only card available for it or are there other choices? Where can we buy the cards other than Ebay?
Thank for watching. I do plan a follow-up video exploring game. I'm not a big gamer, but I'm willing to give it a go. How did I find out? A video appeared in my UA-cam feed about this topic. I had no clue this mini PC had that feature. Yes, eBay is the place to look. This appears to be a card only HP makes. Check out the links in my video description.
I didn't read the tile correctly and I thought I could get one for the HP Prodesk 600 G3 mini.
Thanks for watching. That’s a bummer.
I would like to see what this does to a Batocera machine running on one of these, could be a nice small dual boot Batocera gaming machine/Windows media center PC.
Thanks for watching. Yes, I'd like to do a follow-up video related to retro gaming, but it isn't something I normally do. But this channel is the opportunity for me (and hopefully others) to try new things and learn along the way. Stay tuned.
Runs well. My Bartop arcade is powered by an elitedesk 705 g4 with the ryzen 5 pro 2400ge
@michealdionne5456 I would have guessed, I have done a couple of the G3s for family members. Their igpus are good even up to PS 2/xbox/GameCube emulation fairly well. I was more interested in what it could handle at the top. Like PS3 or XBox 360 emulation. I am currently running a ryzen 3100/3060ti setup for my Home Media Center/Batocera system. It handles most everything pretty well.
At the very least, it'll free up some RAM.
Thanks for watching!
I’m wondering about emulation, my stock one tops out at ps1, will this run ps2 & Xbox or higher?
Thanks for watching. Honestly, I don’t know but willing to try. If anyone else knows, let us know.
Does anyone have pinout of this connector ? Can I use it as additional pcie slot ?
Thanks for watching. Yes, I’d like to know as well.
Would you suggest a G6 or G5 over this G4 if I copy the same upgrade?
Thanks for watching. In short, I guess it depends on what you want to do. The HP Elitedesk 800 G6 has a recent Intel processor and a discrete Nvidia graphics card option. As I stated in the video, I create interactive, online training and online help systems. For me the G4 works fine, and two years ago the price was hard to beat.
Are you using the Larger Power Supply?
Thanks for watching. During the video, I used the 135 watt power supply that came with the unit. I purchased a 150 watt power supply off eBay. Honestly, the mini pc runs about the same; no noticeable additional power consumption.
Does MGPU work with this set up?
Thanks for watching. Following the online instructions, I do not see the MGPU option under Gaming > Graphics > Advanced. I’m guessing this isn’t support with this setup.
Interesting, the built-in graphics are that good that a dedicated gpu wasn't a big upgrade.
At least now, with the dedicated graphics, you are not taking up some of your ram.
Yeah, I was surprised. With the discrete graphics, I noticed temps on the CPU were less during graphics testing I did off camera. This was to be expected. Still loved tinkering with this mini pc :-)
well it's not a very good discrete graphics card so that is why!
For about 2 years I ran a system based on the Ryzen 5 3400G as my main gaming system. It wasn't very good at first person shooters but World of Warcraft and Diablo3 ran pretty decently. Even on the 3840*1440 screen.
IGPs have become pretty powerful over the past couple of years.
I don't support HP (Hyper Proprietary) products.
😂 Thanks for watching.
Wow, I don't know about external graphics card to HP G4 mini. I have two, and I am funboy this computer :). Thank you for movie.
Thanks for your watching.
I have one of those elitedesk, how about your temps?
Thanks for watching. I ran some tests using Geekbench 6 and Cinebench R23 to capture temps. For the CPU, the minimum was 54°C and max was 94°C. In Geekbench 6 graphics test, I saw 60°C. Hope this helps.
AMD 3400G B-450 , 16 Gb 3600 Ram, 1Tb M2 and an AMD 6400 HDMI2.1 4k 120hz, Noctua 9 cm Downdraft cooler.
Max power usage is 121 Watts
Thanks for watching!
someone sure is proud of there pc specs to be spouting them off in a random videos comment like this lol
Cant be worth the extra power and noise.
Thanks for watching, and overall, I would agree with you. If you’re a gamer, I could see a benefit if you already have this EliteDesk PC.
