In 16th century, during Joseon Dynasty, a gisaeng gave birth to a child, Hwangjini. Destined to become a lowly gisaeng herself, Hwangjini engaged her liberal love with music and poetry and fought against gender inequality. Hwangjini was a celebrated ‘Gisaeng’ who would not give in to prejudice. By looking through a life of a greatest gisaeng, who was also a talented artist, viewers would find a new solution to break an age of selflessness.

I can't get over with this korean historical drama. Imagine, I still watching this in 2020. Since Hwang Jini was played in the Philippines, I already fond to Ha Ji-won. She's really a top actress for me.. Portrayed a lot of emotions excellently.

December 2019 - I came upon this series quite by accident. I am American born, have no connection with Korea - except that I am in love with the culture, and have Korean colleagues at my former University (I am 71). This delightful series has compelling characters, and really touched my heart. The leading actors are all excellent. We get to see this girl as she comes of age, and the things she endures, and her triumph. The 'house mother' is also a fine actress. And the intrigues and plots all kept my attention. I watched it until the very end. How great to find it on You Tube again!!!

You need to watch "dae jang geum" as some one who loves korean dramas and stuff. That drama is the best korean drama ever been created, i watched that maybe 7 or 8 times .

kihyonii....Yes, I agree with you. In fact, I already watched it 3 times and now will be the 4th time. I keep going back to the dramas of Ha Ji Won because I admire her so much. Empress Ki has 51 episodes but I watch it every year just like Whang Jin yi, Secret Garden, Damo and King of 2 Hearts.

I first watched this when I was 12 and I couldn’t finish it because it was affecting me so much, it was too emotional for me to handle....now I’m 16 and I’m back because this was so powerful I have to watch again. I love the theme song so much, the whole opening sequence, especially the part where the actual antique painting of hwang jini clears to reveal ha ji won, almost a symbol of the part ha ji won is to play, like a transferral of inner essence. Beautiful.
