No one deserves a career revival more than Liz Phair. She was so needlessly destroyed by quote unquote "critics" & "journalists" who completely disregard the nature of pop music & ignored how she blended subversive verbiage with catchy songwriting (as the best pop songwriters do). I hope this is a signal of her return to popularity.
Lis it’s so wonderful to see somebody’s thinking of Lou Reed on the year of his 80th birthday in March we will hold the glass up and say a fantastic toast to everything Mr Reed gave us
I was doing a telemarketing job and heard this when put on hold. No "hold" music EVER caught my attention, but this did enough to where I had to find out what it was which led me here. I'm thinking...who the hell wrote this. When I saw who it was about...it started making sense. When I saw who wrote it, it all made sense! So glad I got to see Liz in the summer of '93!
@@deepermind4884 Thanks, I looked it up. This is what Liz said: "... I sent [Laurie Anderson] the letter and the whole album, actually. And the video. And I did not hear back, which I took as a tacit-I know it was a good email. So, I took that as, 'I don’t like it.... But I’m not gonna stop you.' Like, 'I respect your artistry, but I’m not gonna engage with you.' So, I felt that was very good. That was a definite good outcome, compared to what could be. "
@@cjm5781 Yeah, I didn't think Liz could think that LA would be ok with it. But she did luck out that she was dealing with someone with a mature temperament. Cheers!
I love the little vocal Laurie-isms like "talking on and on and on..." or "How is that working out for you?" cute vid that shows the sour and sweet of love.
Love that this is sung from Laurie's viewpoint and gives a unique look into their relationship. I really dig the song and am looking forward to the album with this sound (kind of Whip-smart-esque). Go LIZ!!!
Thanks for the comment. I'm not especially musician literate, so I hadn't caught the Laurie Anderson - Lou Reed basis. (I was just appreciating the heck out of new Liz Phair material.) It's better knowing more of the backstory. Googleing "Laurie Lou" was enough to get to a 2013 Rolling Stone article.
@@GarNelson1 Glad you found some backstory to go with the video! There are some cool hints through the song referencing "Superman" Laurie's famous song, down to the puppets themselves looking like Anderson, Reed and Warhol. I don't study music other than I used to listen to Alan Cross here in Canada who used to have an excellent behind the scenes look at musicians and their lives and musical influences. I hope that it has inspired you to dig deeper and maybe even go and listen to their music as well as Phair's, and that is really cool!
@@slacktoryrecords4193 I don't know but to me I get hint's of Go West, Nashville and even May Queen. Hey it's personal and subjective right? I dig the track and will definitely grab the album, cause I like her music. I can see how White Chocolate Space Egg has similarities too but this isn't a contest, if you like it because it draws feelings and rhythms that you connect to White Chocolate Space Egg, great! I get a different feeling, and remember this is only one song, I'd like to hear the rest of the album which is why I originally said "Kind of Whip-smart-esque" not exactly like.
Love Liz Phair! Saw her at Bumbershoot in 2004. I was super close to the stage. Our eyes locked for a few seconds. I smiled, then she smiled. NO ONE can convince me she wasn't captivated by my blue eyes for a short time! Super swoon!
Thanks Liz! I love Lou Reed and his music-what an honest artist and a great human being! We all have flaws, right? You are also a personal favourite of mine; don’t let anyone grind you down!
This is sooo sweet! Lou & Laurie & then Andy! Lou flying high down Fifth Avenue! A cameo of Liz! And finally that last lead on the Tele? Yesss. Kudos to Toben Seymour. And of course to Liz Phair! Thanks so much for giving me / us a little something to look forward to this evening in these strange times. XOX
Love this song, Liz! Like so many of your songs, there's always something that hooks you in to begin with, and then you start noticing everything else. For me, it was the rhythm and the handclaps. Great vocals, great lyrics. I really like the guitar part. Like Canucklhead0, to my ears, this sounds like it could have been released on the Whip-Smart album. It's a song you never knew you needed until it's been released. And the puppet video is excellent! Looking forward to the new album.
Caught this on WMVY driving to work this AM and immediately was hooked. Recorded a quick clip with note to self to look up later. So glad it’s Liz Phair with this great new material 👍
I just preordered the album from her site; signed gray vinyl limited to 500. It includes master downloads of "Hey Lou" & "Spanish Doors." And you'll get the full digital on release date as well.
Two Things: LMAO “How did that work out for you?” Is my favorite bridge since Taylor Swift’s “We’re never getting back together, like, ever.” I chuckle every time. Two; the more I listened I felt like if “Help Me Mary” is the alpha, “Lou” is the omega.
Russ, in this entire universe, there aren't more than a handful of people chuckling at "how did that work out for you?" as perfectly as we are right now. Liz is a #GOAT
An artist who mentions Lou Reed... in a song of her work. Authentic fans of VU Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and Andy Warhol. I love her. I bought her album, highly recommended.
That was great and funny. I just happened to see it - for which I am grateful. So, Warhol and Lou Reed......and Liz Phair (and probs some unknown, to me, lover of Ms. Phair.....). Her work is sublime.
About time young lady!!!! My faves are the vandals, dancehall Crashers, modest mouse, built to spill, Ween, and of course you for the last 25ish yrs of my life. Cheesy but I truly am thankful you were born and created what you have. It's not comparable to anything else.
😂 I was thinking the same thing. Came across the pair myself in the 2000s in NYC in a store and Laurie was lovely. She should be sainted for putting up with Mr. Reeds shenanigans whom I also adore.
Nothing better than a tribute to Lou Reed, one of the all time greatest, dont' get me wrong i love Bob Dylan,Carole King,Joni Mitchell,Paul McCartney,The Smiths, etc, but Lou is my favorite Songwriter of all times,Tori Amos is the best female songwriter IMHO,Liz Phair is also a genius, even her infamous pop albums were great,in just 3 minutes she captured Lou's personality and flaws, the music industry would be nothing without female Singer-Songwriters,kind of ironic i listen to them 90 percent of time but Lou and the VU are the best thing that happened to music industry, damn that was a long comment, thank you Liz for this long time overdue comeback, you rock
Hey Liz, was Lou mean to you or something? I hope you asked Laurie about this before you recorded it. Anyway, loved Whipsmart, O Superman and everything Lou ever did.. RIP Lou Reed.
Yeah I'm curious to see if Laurie says something about this, making puppets including a puppet of herself is one of Laurie Anderson's art styles, kind of weird if she wasn't involved.
👉 OMG! Great song! And they even put in Laurie's cute dimples on the puppet of her!! This is such an original song about such an original couple! Like Lou Reed but I've always been an ardent fan of Laurie's brilliant work!!
The sense of humor in this song kills me ... Great stuff
Well, this was an unexpected bright spot in a lousy year.
Shut up with that year bad bullshit
Top 100 songs of all time. ✔

Liz on the wild side.
Holy guacamoly! There's a name I didn't think would be gracing my feed anytime soon! 😍
I guess you Lucked out big time!!!
I'd be interested to hear what Laurie Anderson thinks of this song.
Same
There's a great interview with Liz on Bullseye w Jesse Thorn where she talks about the reaction she got from Laurie Anderson. You can find it on NPR.

Liz really found herself on this album. Great and catchy songwriting. I’m not sure what was going on with Funstyle but this is definitely more like it
I need "Soberish" so hard...This track and "good side" sound so genuine. Liz Phair can still bring something relevant to the indie scene!

What a great tribute to Lou Reed!
Honestly can't explain how thankful I am that Liz Phair's still out there doing her thing. God bless
This is the most entertaining I've ever seen Lou Reed.
Still has that classic Liz Phair sound that we all know and love...great song!
I really love this little video and I love your new album you keep going because you’re really talented.
Liz Phair singing about Lou Reed? Doesn't get much better than that. The makings of a "Perfect Day."

Hell Yeah!!! Can’t wait to see and hear the new song, Liz!
Great tune. So glad to have new Liz music.
That little Warhol moment, with the PopArt version of the Liz Phair album cover was everything. So fucking meta.
Liz Phair rocks my world!
Wow, Liz, this was worth waiting for! It feels like you went back to your very early sound I fell in love with back in the day. I LOVE it!!
Yeah this is 100% classic Liz!
I think my favorite part is Lou dancing after the bridge. I love it. It's giving me some Uncle Alvarez-y vibes, but still totally fresh.
Love the album Sheridan Road!!
Amazing
This is good. Way to go Liz
She back y'all
How wonderful ! She's marvelous, always great.
