I never heard of PJ until I found a video of PJ and Marc Almond singing a duet of "Yesterdays gone." I love Marc and Tom immensely!! I have lived in America all my life and I only knew about Tom and Elvis. (Born in 1971)I had to read about PJ on Wikipedia to learn about him. I never heard PJ on local Utah radio stations. I knew about Tom and Elvis first. Then I discovered Marc Almond.
Tom and PJ are both wonderful. It has to be said though that Tom was the safe replacement for PJ. A lot of things Tom recorded, PJ did first ( To Make a big man Cry, with these hand s, My Prayer, Delilah, I'm Coming Home etc.) Tom when he started out was even marketed with a Pony tail ..... I must say though Tom does this song far far better than PJ. They both do great versions of "To make a big Man Cry". You cannot compare them as they have two different voices. Tom is a Tenor and probably the best soul singer ever - for me better than most on Motown ( Listen to 13 Hits - he wipes the floor with them, with the exception of James Brown). PJ is a Baritone, he can sing all styles and was an inovator !
Pipkin Hopkins You might prefer Tom Jones, but he is not a soul singer. The ones I mentioned were. Little Richard, who is the best live act I have seen and I have seen the Stones, .Beatles, Animals, Kinks and many more at their peak in the 1960s was not a soul singer. Great rock and roller and a surprisingly brilliant gospel singer. I know 3 people who played at dance halls and cabaret clubs backing a load of acts including the ones I mentioned earlier. Two of them said the biggest arsehole they had played with was Tom Jones, the other said Joe Brown. All 3 said the best, most pleasant one was Roy Orbison. One of them mentioned that anyone who had played with Roy Orbison would say the same.
@@jamesbuckingham.2935 love Roy Orbison, him and Scott Walker are my favourite singers. As for your opinions, they're your opinions, every one's entitled to theirs.
"Eye-yie-yie" .. Sounds a little like the "Frito Bandito" jingle. Seems he hadn't quite figured out what to do with this song, but TJ punched it into a more coherent form. Still nice to hear how the original sounded; thanks for posting!
Great tune, cant believe he turned down Delilah as a hit and let Tom Jones have it ! PJ now lives in Evesham UK. Next time I see him im gonna tease him about letting this one go !
I got completely different story perspective as proby sing this. Sounds that the man was really pitiful. While tom jones version feels like the man just full of anger.
Mayloni Minchew...Excuse me, I humbly would like to put forward the cover of the italian singer/songwriter Jimmy Fontana...In my opinion, his cover is almost (an I mean almost) as valuable as that of Tom Jones. Greets everybody !
I bought tickets to see PJ and the concert got cancelled because of the trouser splitting incident and was offered Tom Jones tickets instead - said no. Love PJ but agree with him about the song. Still don't like Tom Jones,
PJ didn't want it? Smart move. He ruined it anyway. This song belongs to Tom Jones and ONLY Tom Jones can sing it with the power it requires. Comparing Pj to TJ is like comparing Justin Bieber to Pavarotti! Tom is still hitting the charts and performing all over the world. I don't think Pj could even get a gig at the airport Hilton! LOL!!! SIR TOM ROCKS!!!
PJ's voice is vastly superior to Jone's raspy vocals any day, but having said that, I reckon PJ shouldn't have done this atrocious number. One of the most overrated compositions ever. Just my own personal opinion mind you.

I always thought Tom Jones' version of Delilah was the original- you learn something new every day!
Much as I love Jim, Tom wins this one hands down!
Alex Harvey does the definitive version of this song. In my opinion.
Totally agree
you can't compare Tom Jones' vocal timbre to P.J. Proby - Tom excels
Tom Jones is too raucus Engleburt used to make fun of him
Calm down people...Jones owns this song, no one is close.
He hated this song. . . . . then it came Tom Jones
Well for what it's worth a agree with PJ regarding his comments about this song.

Pipkin Hopkins thank you for your opinion. I value and respect it. I side with Tom Jones.
Tom Jones the best soul singer ever? Never heard Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, James Carr...?
@@jamesbuckingham.2935 yes, but I prefer Tom. James Brown and Little Richard were also great.

PJ proby version of Delilah is different.
Fun 💘
Beerkella Spanish! Mariachi Harmony’s 2 Step Song of Loven Murder🤌

💙 Music!
interesting information
thank you
As a big fan of both brilliant artists, both versions have their merits, but do think P.J hasn't
'honed ' his style on this one!
@David Easton great Ty! and you ?
@David Easton Nr Livepool UK!
This would've been a hit and no need to split his trousers but it would never have been as big as Tom Jones' version.
It's in 6/8 time. You just don't hear 6/8 timing anymore.
Nah, man, it sounds ¾ to me!
That's not 6/8, it's 3/4.
@@capothree it still counts in 3s
I must be missing something....where does TJ come in to play?
Great tune, cant believe he turned down Delilah as a hit and let Tom Jones have it !

Steve Clark Proby hated the song and did not want it released.
Oh dear. Not one of his best efforts. Wrong song for him.
I got completely different story perspective as proby sing this. Sounds that the man was really pitiful. While tom jones version feels like the man just full of anger.
i like how this one sounds more spanish then tom jones one and also it says ay ay ay delilah not my my my delilah
I love this, just like the version made by alex harvey sensational band
heard a version by Peter Lee Stirling before he had changed name to Daniel Boone sounding similar to Tom Jones, vocals a little lighter but very good
stocktonful2 Peter Lee Sterling was the writer of my favourite Mersey Beat era song, Don’t Turn Around. He also wrote I Think Of You for them.
Tom’s voice is mature and powerful. PJ’s voice is a teen.
Seems like we've been excomunicated ??? Lol Yeah you have a very valid point :D
Tom Jones is far superior singer for this song.. He could sing the phone book and sound Exclent!!!
Mayloni Minchew...Excuse me, I humbly would like to put forward the cover of the italian singer/songwriter Jimmy Fontana...In my opinion, his cover is almost (an I mean almost) as valuable as that of Tom Jones. Greets everybody !
I am not a fan of Tom Jones but Tom`s version is miles ahead
Tom Jones beats them all.
