For your question at 29:06, that’s the state of Colorado which many Americans go to for skiing! The area you were pointing to, in particular, has a dense concentration of national forests

Just got back from Iceland. It sits right on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge so part of the island is on the North American plate and part of it is on the Eurasian plate. There are places you can go and see the edges of the plates. There's even one place (Silfra Fissure) where you can scuba dive between them.

The Appalachian Mountains are prounounced a little differently based on if you are living in the south or north of the U.S. In the south where I live, we pronounce it like:
    -Apple
-Atch (like the word Hatch without the H)
    -In
So Apple - Atch - In
    In the north, it's pronounced:
    -Apple
    -Lay (like laying down)
    -Shun (like rejecting someone)
So Apple - Lay - Shun

@WelshASMR82Maps I grew up in the part of the Appalachian Mountains that run through North Carolina, and I can honestly say there is no "right" way to say it. 🤣 It's a very regional thing.

@Cryptokeeper0421 Interesting! So you pronounce it more like the people I've met from the north then. I'm in N.C. so it's interesting to see how it changes across the states.

    Here's a fun U.S. Geography fact.
If you made the headwaters for the Missouri river the beginning of the Mississippi river instead of splitting them, it would be the longest river on earth.
Also the Appalachian mountains are the oldest mountains on earth. Their original formation started 1.1 billion years ago.

If it’s not too hot, a barbecue is nice for Christmas. Prawns are always hugely popular. The traditional desserts are nice, but sweets like trifle, pavlova, and chocolate ripple cake are nice cool desserts.

Puerto Rico is a really odd situation for us. We got it from the Spanish after our war with them in the early 1900s. The only reason it isn’t a state is mostly because it upsets the political balance too much for our congress to allow it mostly. Atleast that’s normally the historical reason. I think eventually it’ll become a state, it’s just going to take more time. Slow process.

I’m not Puerto Rican but it seems a little more complex than that. Puerto Rico was colonized by the Spanish resulting in the hybrid culture that is Puerto Rican today. It became a US territory after the Spanish-American War. Some Puerto Ricans want independence, some want statehood. Some want neither, mostly because the government is pretty mismanaged and they also don’t have to pay federal tax. I think the majority of Puerto Ricans actually live outside of the island, mainly in the US northeast and Florida, so that makes it a bit more complex as well. In my opinion, Puerto Rico should become the 51st state but then we’d have to add another star to all the flags.

    • @xviper2k
      @xviper2k 10 місяців тому +2

Colonialism? The only truly colonized people of Puerto Rico were the indigenous population, who are all long dead. Most Puerto Ricans are descended from the Spanish colonizers who killed them. lol
The "weird situation" in Puerto Rico is called indecisiveness. They've been given several opportunities to change their status, including independence (which is by far the least popular option.) They don't vote. Not in the numbers needed for it to count. So I know you think you're going to bat for them, but you're really not. Their situation is nothing like Ireland's.
