    Hey, just adding this comment to say using regular 3D resin for action figures can be dangerous. When the resin parts rub against each other they produce toxic resin dust. You really should be using specialised resins. Resione make one specifically for action figures. The prints have this smooth 'injection mould' feel and do not produce dust when they rub.

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  11 місяців тому +12

      Thanks for bringing that up! I did some Googling, but the results were basically that the dust itself isn't toxic, but breathing in such small particles is bad. Does that sound right? Or do you have other information that would be helpful?
      In either case I would be trying to solve the dust problem for sure. When the neck rubbed against the torso it was causing it to sand itself down a bit. Even besides potential toxicity, it's not a good look.
      When I looked into Resione, it seemed like it might not be especially more complex resin besides mixing flexible resin and regular resin(which I've started doing/testing), but I'm going to try to get a bottle of Resione anyway as well and compare how different they are.

    • @user-cy9kr4hi7t
      @user-cy9kr4hi7t 10 місяців тому +5

      @@ComicallyToys Yeah, it's breathing it in that's dangerous. It builds up in your body as well. Everyone will have different limits but once you hit your limit it's not going to be good.
      Resione, and other engineering resins, are a little different to just add something like siraya tech tenacious. It's not the 'flexible' component that makes it different, it has a powder mixed in with the resin (so shake your bottle well) which leaves the final print smooth and feeling like injection mould plastic rather than resin.

    Print that figure out, man!
    I'm going to talk to my friend Andy soon, and he 3-D prints stuff in resin, but he also can do 3-D sculpting. He's the guy who took my Thor hammer drawings, created them in 3-D, and then resin printed them. If you're interested, Jack, I'll see if he can send you the file or provide a link for you so that you can print them. Just let me know.

    I feel like this is the new path for action figures. Especially custom ones. Been working with 1/6 scale figures. I've just been sculpting headsculpts but will be doing my own figures soon. Working on a guyver armor right now in 1/6 but once i get the right settings for a more flexible resin then i'll be looking to 1/12 scale. Details are so much better than legends.

      I completely agree! I was thinking about this with a friend the other day and was guessing what a future might be like where we would purchase a file from Hasbro for a one time print of the figure at home. Obviously it would take a lot of technology to make that happen, but it would be nuts.
      That's awesome that you make your own sculpts! Do you have an IG you can tag me on? Or otherwise a place I can see it? I'd love to check out your work!

    When you think about it this is also a good way to 3D print figures of Marvel characters that the official line aren't going to be making anytime soon if at all. Like for example make 3D printed figures of the cast of X-Men Evolution.

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  11 місяців тому +3

      I totally agree! 3D printing is seriously amazing because of things like that. Then you just gotta find a good 3D sculptor/artist that can make those figures. I don't see the X-Men Evolution characters getting any love from Hasbro any time soon so that's a great pick. I know this is pretty random, but I'd LOVE a figure for Slapstick.

I got a resin printer for Christmas last year and have been hesitant to try it but there's just so much cool stuff you can do with it. I know it might not be the best slicer, but it's free and working so far for me. I've had a few failed prints, but that has more to do with calibration or model orientation. Otherwise I've been having great fun printing stuff out!

    Great video.
    Here's a tip I'm JUST learning:
    Adding a bit of flexible resin - about 5%/ 10% will make a HUGE difference - especially for smaller accessories. Issues like a gun trigger snapping will go away.
    Be exact about your measurements/ mixture and fine tune your settings using test calibration prints. It's a bit time consuming but once you have it dialed it you'll be set.
    Cheers!!

    As a long time printer of both FDM and SLA (Resin), I can tell you there are reasons for printing in FDM. Yes, the level of detail is not as high on an FDM printer, though you can decrease the layer height for some pretty spectacular results....just takes longer. While SLA has a very high level of detail and is significantly faster, it's not without flaws. UV resin is pretty fragile when cured and prone to breakage. It also tends to bind , so surfaces stick together...even when cured.

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  7 місяців тому

      I'll be interested to see issues of surfaces sticking once cured. So far so good for me with the special resin I'm using. Then it'll be interesting to see how it goes once I get it painted!

    There's other people making 3d printed figures, with full articulation (instead of zip ties, which seems like might be too loose). There's @morphonauts, who makes 2-6" fully articulated figures; there's @teccotoys, who are developing their own figure line, making 1-2" figures with mechas, full articulation too; @fantazmtoys, making retro Ghostbusters figures, and there's probably many more I haven't found. And of course a lot of people making 3d printed accessories.
    My point is that yes, you can make fully articulated action figures with a 3d printer, although they might be a bit fragile.
    There's also another way. Design the figures like japanese figures, like figma, with all the joints being external pieces you can buy on the internet. You just print out the bodyparts and joint them with the japanese joints, then paint. Add some flexible resin and you're golden!

      I don't find the prices of 3DZipGuy to be entirely unreasonable myself. Because once you have it, then you can print to your hearts content. So you could print a huge one, or an even smaller one.
      Though as you said, I've been getting interested in some statues too! My biggest problem right now is my major lack of painting ability!

      @duogemstone 10 місяців тому

      @ComicallyToys there not unreasonable but are overpriced they should be in the 5-10 dollar range. Atleast Coming the from miniature/statue side of 3d printing, i sub for 20 a month on one pateron and get 7ish statues and that the expensive tier. Its anything to do with action figure and 3d printing they all seem to be overpriced found one guy on pateron who does head sculpts 30 a month and you get 3. For that price i can sub to 2 or 3 statue makers and get atleat 7 or 8 a month or go with mini makers and get 2 or 3 entire warbands. Idk was a disappointment when i looked into printing action figure stuff maybe im just to damn cheap.
      Dont let painting stop ya, youll do atleast as good as most people selling them one ebay as they only ever slap a base coat and call it good. Just go the drybrush route or basecoat and the hard pastels (shave them into dust and dust the pigment where ya want for shadows ) both are easy easy paintjobs that look quite nice when done

    I feel like anyone making sculpts for printing should REALLY focus on optimizing it for resin printing.

      You are SOOOOOO right about that. Part of the problem I'm having currently is getting the rest of the pieces to print out right. And I think that has at least some to do with getting the supports just right on the pieces. If they were pre-supported then that would make a huge difference.

    3:21 no it’s not. Hasbro reused toybiz molds in 2006-2010

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  11 місяців тому

      Yep I know. I didn't explain it, but I consider Hasbro's era really starting around 2014 once they(more or less) left the ball joints hips behind. So for me, this one is their first "true" release of their own engineering.

    • @ComicallyToys

      People are fairly certain that another Tobey and Andrew are coming possibly later this year or next year with civilian heads. It's certainly likely/possible, but there's a very real chance that it'll either be a different color and/or be missing certain accessories. Hasbro never releases the same figure twice in the same exact color/mold/accessories.

      The costs of 3D printing continue to keep dropping. Plus there are plenty of places that provide free access to 3D printing. So while it is definitely more expensive than buying an off the shelf action figure, it's definitely becoming more in reach for more and more people!

    even house can be build by 3d print. what’s your questions again?

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  11 місяців тому

      Sure, but the typical person doesn't have access to a printer that can print a house. With how the hobby is going today, just about anyone can have custom action figures printed without having to pay very high amounts from specialized companies.

    Considering these are copyrighted characters that the modeler has no legal right to, you should upload the files you purchase from him to thingiverse so others don't have to pay for it. And no that's not slimy, he's making money from piracy.
