Aunt Rodessa was one of the baddest sopranos of that time honestly

Rhodessa still has a Facebook page. Not sure if she is the one running it, but it still gets updated. She turned 94 a month ago. I absolutely love the Barrett Sisters. I learned of them through their interaction with the southern (i.e. white) gospel genre in the mid-90s to early 2000s. I've never seen an audience that wasn't brought to their feet through their spirit-filled music.

I bought the soundtrack for this documentary. I found the vinyl because I need moments where I can sit and lIsten to the whole thing.
What I love about the groups that were highlighted was the quality of musicianship. To me, musicianship is the skill that allows you to makes use of your talent, your instrument, to make your art.
In this case, the musicianship is so evident in the arrangement. There is such sonic interest and variety, there is a reward for multiple listens, there is richness and texture that adds to the message being communicated.
There is also the musicianship visible in their choices - each member knows their instrument (aka their voice) so well and, you can tell, that they can express that knowledge well enough for the other member to understand and adjust. Never mind the musicianship required to adjust your instrument and performance to suit the group needs. When a musical group “sound good together”, it is the sum of several intentional skills and decisions to sound that way. That’s not raw talent or luck.
Also, I don’t recall if it’s the lead singer here or the subject of the doc, Willie Mae, but you can see one of the major tenets of this genre: clarity. She performs the song with her voice but also with her face and her presence. Her diction is excellent, but she also commits to the idea of the song, and communicates that idea across.
The joy of gospel for me is the ability to outwardly express an incredibly internal experience. I am not a religious person, and have had issues with most faiths, but I can’t help but feel what these performers feel when I hear or watch them. I know some see that as a product of the subject matter, that what I’m hearing is the gospel finally touching me, but I think it’s more the incredibly musicianship and artistry that allows me to connect.
