Jesus, we are in 2021. No one gives a shit if you have hands neck tattoos in developed and serious countries. What matters is performance and if someone filters you by tattoos the hiring manager can't be smart.
I will say that tattoos are much more culturally acceptable now, as a hiring manager i can confirm that obvious tattoos are not a deterrent in my screening process unless they are violent in nature. He’s saying you used to have to earn face and hand tattoos by having lots of ink elsewhere, which proves you know what you’re getting yourself into. And even then you used to have to wait. I know artists that won’t schedule a face tattoo sooner than a year from when a deposit is paid. That year is for you to think about it and make sure you still want that ink on your face permanently. These days too many unscrupulous artists will just take the money and tattoo whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want. Basically, if someone has face and hand tats and no other ink, they’re a fucking poser.
It's not him gatekeeping, he's stating facts, when you get face & hand tattoos it can be very hard to find decent employment & a lot of people end up regretting getting their face/hands/neck done first. If this is what stops you from getting them then maybe you should think more about it before getting them because you will face that judgement regardless of the placement. Just make smart choices & don't be stupid about it.
I think it stems from social media (like most things do) because your hands, neck and legs are parts that many people will see, so it's usually for achieving a certain aesthetic rather than what it used to be, which is an actual meaningful symbol.
my first tattoo was on my hand… never hurt my opportunities or my success. as an artist, the best thing you can do is just give your client what they ask for and not shit on their choices.
I originally wanted my first tattoo on my finger, my tattoo artist straight up said he doesn’t do hand tattoos and when I picked a different placement he still asked me more than once if I was sure -I will forever have respect for him and artists like this, and be thankful for his guidance
I remember when I went in for a tattoo appointment the first time at 19, the guy _grilled_ me for almost 10 minutes. He kept telling me, "Make sure you know what you're doing, this shit can cost you jobs if it's too visible in some sectors, you might have to deal with scandalized aunties (I'm Indian) who see it. Make sure you _know_ what you're in for." Apparently he'd seen a lot of college students regret tattoos within weeks, so if anyone was under a certain age, he wouldn't tattoo above the collar or over the cuffs.
he’s not being judgmental for no reason it’s just that most tattooers are just extremely passionate about the craft and try to protect it from people trying to capitalize off something they don’t actually give a damn about tattooing isn’t just a job, it’s a culture/lifestyle and it’s very sacred to us if you’re passionate about tattoos whether you’re an artist or not, you just understand that there’s a way you do things and a way you don’t... hand/neck tattoos are something you earn as you go along your journey getting tattooed plus, for a long time heavily tattooed people were outcasts and now you have people taking shortcuts to appear to be heavily tattooed because it’s popular we take pride in actually being fully blasted and not just tattooed in the right areas to appear it but at the end of the day people can get whatever they want, but to be taken seriously in the culture you gotta actually be about it
Translation: you should save your neck and hands for last. A lot of places won't hire people with neck/face/hand tattoos because it's such a visible spot that can't be easily covered up. They are "job stopper" tattoos. It's best to wait until you have a lot more tattoos before you make a huge decision like that. A lot of tattoo artists won't do tattoo those areas unless you have either a substantial amount of tattoos, or they're sure / they make sure with you that it won't affect your job or living situation just because people are so judgmental. That's basically what he means. It sucks that people are so judgmental when it comes to tattoos and visibly seen ones, and the industry is slowly changing in some parts of the world, but unfortunately people still get judged for those tattoos because they're so visible and harder to cover up. Edit: I have nothing against tattoos and where they’re placed (obvious exceptions being racist/homophobic/etc. ones) I even have some in these placements myself. It’s 2023 my friend, the average 9-5 worker is allowed to express themselves how they want for the most part, if someone with lips that look like they’ve been on a suction cup can get a job, I should be allowed tattoos wherever I want(as long as they aren’t outright offensive) I also have both my hands fully ratted and haven’t been discriminated when getting jobs because of them

I think it all depends on placement and how many you have.. grandmas and mother’s and what not, usually have little tattoos that are usually hidden (1 or 2) however like myself, I get tattoos in the most undesirable places. Chest, back, legs, etc. and usually big pieces. So I still believe it’s counter culture for some.. and a trend for others.

As another artist on here had previously mentioned, having visible tattoos does not mean it is an invitation for ppl to gawk at them necessarily, thus it could just be that person's aesthetic. I think the subject matter, composition, and application are all much more valuable judgements to think about when looking at artworks. Placement of artwork on the body as symbolic gesture is also another facet to empower an artwork.

Same here, my neck and hands were the last place to get tattooed. I worked in the industry and my boss made me put a transfer of my hand tattoos on every day for a month before he'd tattoo me, to prove I really wanted them.
probably cause things are more expensive now getting something that nobody can see is a waste of money.
It's just because they want to show off
Bros not even telling you not to get a face tattoo, just that he’s not gonna be the one that does it.
for a minute I couldn't recognize this Ink Master
As another artist on here had previously mentioned, having visible tattoos does not mean it is an invitation for ppl to gawk at them necessarily, thus it could just be that person's aesthetic. I think the subject matter, composition, and application are all much more valuable judgements to think about when looking at artworks. Placement of artwork on the body as symbolic gesture is also another facet to empower an artwork.
Or just don’t be a snobby prick and act like any and every tattoo is art in inself as well as any other form of expression :) you must be fun to be around :)
Everyone calling this dude a gatekeeper when he’s trying to look out for you is crazy. Any mf getting a face or neck tattoo as their first tat is beyond dumb…
Trying to live in the past while the future keeps pushing on is dumb. Isn't it time to move forward? We do business with wife killers, but tattoos on the neck and face are the problem.
No it’s not. Because ppl have their preference so you think you sound smart about somebody else’s decision on where they want a tattoo. I do tattoos and the only tattoos I don’t do is a false man that is portrayed as Jesus Christ, penis tattoos and ass tattoos on men. Those are not my area of work so does that make me less of a tattoo artist?
"..when he's just trying to look out for you" - Just like drug laws, eh? No. How about one adult not telling another adult what they can, and/or cant do with their own bodies.
If the artist doesn't want to participate that's the artists decision. But this bs about pretending to know what's best for another adults life is dumb.
Whether the artist turns out to be right, or wrong its not his place to tell another adult anything about themselves.
@@GeneralBloke23the comment clearly went over your head. What your saying is true but we aren't talking about that
He's not being paid to "look out for you" he's being paid to tattoo art on people. Either stfu and do what you're being paid to do or close down your shop. Nobody truly gives a single fuck what another person thinks about what's going on their own body.
Can someone translate what he said. For a moment I thought it was the Vice President speaking.
That’s some S-tier gatekeeping right there.
So he’s basically saying: getting a tattoo, but not enough tattoos is a red flag
No, he's saying if it's personal which a tattoo is. It should be something private. When someone deliberately gets a visible tattoos off the rip. It's not about art, private memories, values, ect... It's about showing off like a fuck boy. It also is a reflection of a generational gap. Since the early 40's-50's until recently. People literally had their careers end because of a visible tattoo. So making that jump to visible was something you had to really want. It meant more to people. Now any idiot teenager doing too much xanax has one.
Man said "I can't even have a conversation with you". And he meant it 😂
And that’s how you end up with next to no business 🤡🤦🏼♂️
@@nerothehunterright he is still doing this because he makes no money and just drinks tea made from bark 😂
The classic Warped Tour bodysuit
Being into tattoo culture is the biggest red flag
The fact that this guy wouldn’t “have a conversation” with somebody just because the way their TATTOOS are placed is a red flag in itself….
I’m pretty sure that’s not what he saying
Lost respect for him a little bit there
fr
This guy is actually among the top tattooists in the world really very wel known and appeared on a tattoo show I believe… he’s just saying people get tattoos to show off in unhidable places yet have none on any other parts of their body
yeah he’s weird for that
“Im Hank hill, and I sell tattoos, and tattoo accessories”
There's a hilarious Drake interview where he's shown a face tattoo of his name. His "black" side responded to it😅🤣
The ol' everlasting job stoppers
Bro he’s literally describing himself with the 2012 image lmao
how? the dude isnt tatted in just single areas like he mentioned?
@@rodrigocisneros7019 his sleeve still have lot of room , not completely cover . There’re a Lot of shitty work on him that he ain’t fixing it but his neck and hand are blasted
@@bbgen-sp6ns but that isnt what he said he disliked
@@bbgen-sp6ns what he meant was having tattoos in certain areas but other areas just completely empty,i domt agree with him but thats what he meant
@@bbgen-sp6ns I think he meant like say if your first tattoo was a hand tattoo he wouldn’t do it or doesn’t like it because your first tattoo or first couple shouldn’t be the one that stop you from getting jobs . Just my assumption though .
man i just like tattoos 😭 why is it always so deep
Damn, bro looks like He had a rough time
I agree, swimmers who don't start out in the kiddie pool can't be taken seriously😂
I don't think he explained it well, but he said "someone who gets hands, neck and face and NOTHING ELSE." Yes, it's a look, a different look than was traditionally acceptable or even really possible in legit tattoo culture 20, 10, even five years ago. But if you have NOTHING else it does give off the impression that you're getting tattooed to look cool/so that other people will see your tattoos and not because you really love them. Not saying that's fair, but it's definitely something I've thought to myself before--especially since a lot of younger people who have just the visible stuff done also have a ton of copied pinterest tattoos which will never be cool no matter how much times change.
if you have a neck tattoo but nothing connecting under it...cmon bro. or if you have a hand tattoo but no forearm. why.
I have a few “Pinterest” tattoos and a few with my own unique customizations. No one including myself will ever think my tattoos are cool. Weird, sexually stimulating, burnt out. Yes. My arm looks like a Mescaline trip. But I love my tats and got them foe No1 else. Being cool is overrated.
Ahhhhh, thanks for explaining!
Certain tattoos will be unnecessary because some just wanna fill in the spaces they have left
Seems like a weird form of gatekeeping
Anthony hands down one of the best artists to grace ink master
So basically the motorcycle squid on a turbo Hayabusa equivalent of tattoos lmao
Bro making me feel like dumb asf 😂
When I get a tattoo, I’m gonna get it on my forearm. If I get a tattoo, I want people to be able to see it
exactly. People want to show off the amazing art that they’ve got on their body from their Tattooist. Dont try to gatekeep people from getting a tattoo. That will lose you several customers
Has nothing to do with it, in tattoo culture you’re not supposed to just go for your face and neck is what he’s saying. Why be tatted in those places before you even have anything on your body?
@@marley1995 because tattooing isnt a cultural personality trait for everyone in the world. because they want a tattoo in the place they want it and not in a place where other people sees it as more suitable.
if a person wants a neck tattoo, and only a neck tattoo with no intent to get more, is because they want one tattoo, and no where did it say in the big book of tattoo rules that you have to commit to any other placement of ink other than the one you walked in that damn store for. common sense really.
As someone that isn’t into tattoos or tattooing I’m shocked to learn what stigma there is in the community against certain things. I guess everything really does have a meaning even when that meaning is subjective to individuals. Makes me wanna stay clean tbh. I don’t like how people with tattooos judge each others work. Why would you get it done permanently if you didn’t fuck with the idea of having it in the first place.
I saw a guy about my age (18-21) and he had face tattoos and his hands and knees were tattooed. I work in the suburbs. I can tell he’s influenced by rap culture and he thinks he’s one of them. Now he’s gonna have those dumbass face tattoos for the rest of his life
These people are everywhere in the tattoo scene. They’re arrogant gate keepers that are pissed they had to sacrifice jobs in the 90’s for their hand jams but we can have our foreheads tatted and own companies
He’s not even talking about the art itself he’s talking about people getting shit tatted in a highly visible area when they don’t have tats anywhere else.
Yep. Its funny how tattoo culture is all about self expression and being you, but you have bozo’s like dude in the video judging folks for having their first tattoos in visible places like the hands or the face. Every single subculture is riddled with judgmental pricks like this guy.
@@stryke1989 y’all are missing his whole point
It’s permanent. Not a lot of people put that thought to it. It’s not gate keeping. It’s softly letting you know you may want to reconsider
tattoo removal
This was a dorky “gate keeper” response
