vedere che Gianni Raimondi non e stato inserito fra i grandi tenori del XX secolo dopo avere ascoltato questa romanza e considerato che e stato il tenore che ha cantato più di tutti alla Scala dove ha interpretato una recita di Boheme a dir poco strepitosa nel 1963 mi indigna enormemente!!!!!
Non so sedipendesse dalla volontà delle case discografiche e dei mezzi d'informazione radiofonica e giornalistica ma all'epoca (1960) erano due tenori in auge, seppur bravissimi, che vantavano il plauso della critica il resto era fuffa, neanche il merito di essere segnalati. Era l'epoca di Del Monaco e Di Stefano e non era facile per altri tenori emergere anche se altrettanto bravi basti pensare, appunto, che fra i non segnalati vi erano i Gianni Raimondi e Franco Corelli, anzi per quest'ultimo addirittura gli fu dato il nomignolo di Franco PECORELLI. Figuriamoci la competenza di molti critici della materia.
I actually performed with him in 1971 when he was in New York appearing at the Met. I was astounded at the power and fulness of his beautiful voice. My immediate impression was, "Wow!! , I like this man a lot better than Pavarotti, whom I felt at the time had a thin and silvery sound at the top of his register; Gianni's voice had the power and beauty and ring of Mario Lanza on the high notes." He certainly brought the audience to their feet with tremendous applause and enthusiasm. He was also friendly, humble and easy to know and get along with. He was absolutely one of the very best.

I’m much younger and belong to a different generation and unfortunately my opinion about the singers of the past is based only on the recordings… it’s interesting that your impression about LP was that his top was thin and not powerful enough.. Raimondi’s voice seems to be slightly heavier in the middle register leaving the impression that he might be a spinto rather than a clear lyrico tenor but when he goes to the top register i notice that there is a very small difference in terms of projection.. In Pav’s case, I hear no difference at all throughout the whole range of his voice. Again… I only know them by recordings!

I own a recording of La Favorite with Raimondi. What a magnificent rendition! What a greatly underrated singer. This you tube video does him little justice! The best Una Vergine ever sung I feel on modern recording devices. Beautifully sung. Lyrical, youthful and brimming with joy.

To me too, he ranks among the most beautiful tenor voices of all times - with Lauri Volpi, Gigli, Tagliavini, Vinogradov and some few others. He´s the perfect example of what a gifted voice, ringing, sparkling, well trained in the great tradition can render.
Not every opera singer wants to be world famous, or needs to be to feel complete, that's why there are so many great but obscure opera singers who many people have never heard of.
How come he has not been more well-known? He is surely among the best of tenors. In La Favorita, he is even better than Alfredo Kraus, who is already spectacular.

The reason why some if these great Tenors were not more famous us simply timing. They were out before the we had all this social media . Their audiences were small in the big scheme of things. Pavorotti became famous only because of the concerts and mixing it up with other commercial artists, then he became a household name. He gives a similar explanation himself on you've to what I've given here as to why the greats were not more famous. However bare in mind they were famous in their own world, just not not a the massive commercial level we so many untalentd artists enjoying!!!

Lanfranco Morelli......condivido in pieno....poco considerato da pubblico e critica....secondo me superiore a Pavarotti osannato. Per poter esprimere un giusto parere, non solo di gusto ma anche tecnico, bisogna confrontarlo con i grandi tenori.......Di Stefano, Corelli, Del Monaco, Kraus.....mia personale opinione
