35 Great Lakes Freighters - The Steel Giants Return!

- With the 2023 shipping season now in the books, I made this compilation showing the highlights from the videos I captured in the Duluth and Superior area. Like I have done with previous seasons, the footage presented here is meant to display the widest variety of lake freighters seen in a range of weather and lighting conditions throughout the season.
I have included a total of 40 video clips showcasing 35 different lake freighters. For each ship, I included data on the date its hull entered service, its overall length, the cargo carrying capacity, the type of engines, and the overall horsepower of all engines combined. I didn't include maximum speed, as most ships have a top speed in the same 13-16 knots range.
Since this video is over 100 minutes in length, I have indexed the ships so you can pick out your favorites using the time stamps below. For each ship, I went back to the raw camera footage to create new edits that show the highlights of each arrival or departure.

Steller video! Its amazing watching giant 500-1000 ft steel walls gently float on the water light as a feather. The horn salutes puts the cherry on top as they creep though the canal and onto the open lake. Great Job! Can't wait to see you're coming videos!

Thank you as always! I wish I had started doing this earlier, as there were so many ships that retired before I could catch them. There’s a long list of near misses that really makes me sad. But I just need to catch what I can, as more rumored retirements are just around the corner.

Such a relaxing video, as always. They all sound good, but there was something about the Munson's master salute towards the end that really was nice. We're so used to hearing her frozen horn that her deep, vibrating resonance is a bit of a treat.
Yes, I threw in that second Munson clip because I liked that salute. And because it's one of my favorite ships!

The Paul R Tregurtha is the only Laker that allows non crew guest to ride aboard the vessel with guest quarters and a lounge area if not mistaken.
Several ships have guest quarters for non-crew. They are usually meant for company executives or important guests. There is a raffle for a ride on the Alpena that will be given away early next year, if I’m not mistaken.
Very nice videos. I have many great memories building the 1000 footers at American Shipbuilding in my 20's. Good times.

Nice! Where was the second clip, the Munson filmed? I was first thinking the Keweenaw, but then naw. Duluth maybe? Do you know if the Portage canal in the Keweenaw is still used by the large freighters?
Most clips (including the Munson) were shot in Duluth-Superior. I’m not sure if any freighters use the Keewanaw canal these days. If they do, it’s very rare.
New subscriber. Does the bridge serve the roads in the ports? Does public traffic come through?
Thanks! Welcome aboard. The bridge serves a long natural sand bar that contains a residential neighborhood. None of the cargo ports are served by the bridge, but the Coast Guard has their station out there.

Yes, still the biggest after 43 years. When the Tregurtha retires, the next “queen” will likely be smaller (for the first time ever).

She got some fresh paint in 2022, if I remember correctly.

One thing those canucks dont do much of is keep a fresh coat on any of their behemoths and its sad. They make the money some of them look horrendous though, cool but horrendous.
