As someone that graduated just 3 months ago, with the first 2 months being a freelancer accomplishing my financial goals but last month only having 1 payed shoot and also just one planned for upcoming month, thanks for the reminder that every freelancer struggles at the start of the year!
I completely agree on what you're saying, that most of the work comes from existing clients, but at the end of the day, these existing clients became EXISTING through you coming up with ways to hunt them down, just like you said. Thats how I love to actually operate ! Keep these videos coming bro ❣

I got made redundant over Christmas and have been back to freelancing which has been slow this Jan, so if your February blows up and you can't be bothered editing or doing motion work in AE drop me a line Scott!
I feel like my issue is that I've been shoehorned into a really weird niche of production, working for a tiny religious TV Channel but still failing to actively get some response for even regular jobs at bigger channels, the only jobs being very much adjacent to that religious sector of very boring and uninspired "corporate" content, except without any of the allowances for creativity. I've helped a UA-camr with his projects and he's always had nothing but good words for me but getting actual leads or clients feels like a shot into a void. I've created a showreel with what I currently have but I don't feel like that itself is good enough, I feel like the scales are tipping towards giving up at this point

I'm a one man micky mouse video situation right now without wider budgets to hire crew outside of one reliable sound guy. It's very difficult to form connections; everyone is doing there own thing. My experience level is 100 times below yours but one thing i notice is trying to build a bit of a showreel last year, it was hard to even do something for free for some people, like a friend is putting on a play in London, do they want it done? Filmed? Do they fuck lol. On a side Note Scott, in terms of doing what you're saying here in order to get some production assistant work is it best to write to producers directors or creative houses ad agencies themselves? Or is it just all of the above?
