      This exact philosophy of "win now" and "just get in and see what happens" has held this franchise back for far too long. 2004 was the best thing to happen for the Flames, but also the worst thing to happen after that playoff run. Because that's when the bar was set by Murray Edwards and ownership to win every year without tanking at the expense of never getting the high draft picks or a snowball's chance in hell of drafting the first overall. The Murray Edwards Mantra of Mediocrity needs to change.

    There are 3 recent first round picks that in the lineup now, one on the Wranglers who looks like a player, 2 taken last summer, 2 coming this summer and 2 the following summer ( this is not the late 2000's Dean - after Backlund: Nemisz 25th, Erixon 23rd, Reinhart 64th Baertschi 13th). Clearly the smart move is to continue to build for the future 3-5 years from now, rather than expending those future assets for a bit of a bump right now. Pinder seems to have a nuanced approach and the other guys seem to just find fault with his logic.

    • @JBaker17
      @JBaker17 10 днів тому +3

      The logic he is missing is there is no need to do anything and to stop thinking we can be the bottom 10 when it’s nearly impossible with the players we currently have. The bottom 5 usually stay the bottom 5 for a while.. careful what you wish for. Pinder also tends to forget all the young draft picks coming into the team now, and that it is their time to shine he is wanting to tank. He’s wishing for a near impossible outcome. Just like us winning the cup is as well. I think it’s better to just let the kids play, playoffs or not and quit stressing about rolling the dice on a top 5 pick. We should consider ourselves lucky if we don’t need to bottom out for years on end.

      @@JBaker17the argument against that is if the management of the flames was actually doing things properly they could make this team bad enough to be bottom 10 very easily regardless of an over achieving goaltender. Why are we continuing to hear rumblings about signing a 30 year old defenseman well into his 30s when you can already see regression in his game this season. Why are we not shopping assets like Coleman, Andersson, kadri etc… if you found a way to trade some of those key veteran pieces that are doing a lot right now to be the defensive backbone of an anemic offensive team then this franchise easily falls down the 10 or so points in the standings it would take to be picking in the top 10. You then bank on them trying to build back the team in 3-4-5 seasons when some of these picks they are making in the last few and upcoming few drafts start to click. People are sick and tired of the 12-18 place finishes every year. PICK A LANE AND AGGRESSIVELY PURSUE IT instead of trying to have your cake and eat it too

    • @yorkstu100
      @yorkstu100 9 днів тому +1

      @@JBaker17 Except the conditions on the pick to Montreal are driving his thought process. If the Flames just miss the playoffs - they are potentially giving the 17th pick to Montreal instead of Florida's which could be 30th. If they slide a little more and move into the bottom 10 they keep the pick and Montreal has to take Florida's. The difference between the 10th pick and the 30th pick is a lot when you are looking to draft a future #1 centre. It would cost you at least 2 second round picks to move from 30th to 10th if you were moving up in the draft.

    • @JBaker17
      @JBaker17 9 днів тому +1

      @ right but you also need to think of this as still paying for Trelivings mistakes. Conroy opened the flood gates to the young team, new coach, and new structure in the room. I’m just an armchair GM as we all are, but I would rather the kids push and fail or push and get in to the playoffs to give them motivation in the future. The stress of picking top 10 or even top 5 isn’t the right stress to win a cup. I think those big teams like Dallas and Colorado sucked when they sucked but never actively tried to suck to get their picks. Edmonton is where they are at but after a decade of bottom feeding. Buffalo even worse, but I argue buffalo has motivation issues with their young kids and likely could be due to not ever tasting the playoffs and poor management. I just think Pinder loves drafts and sees the pick going to Montreal as a waste, while the others are accepting the bad timing but embracing the team we have. I firmly believe no purchasing or giving up futures for this year is the move, but I don’t think looking for ways to tank sends the right message which is what Pinder seems to gripe about day in and day out if we don’t win.

    Imo, might not be popular. The team isn't lucky, Huska said it himself, they have a team that enjoys everyone in the locker. This is new this year, they have done well and I think this will grow. Sure, they might add, there are stars coming up, but the team isn't giving up and it's showing. If they make a drastic change to the dynamic now, it could cripple the chemistry and we are back to building that. Conroy is building up a talent pool, and that will help moving forward. This culture of mediocrity and staying in the mushy middle comes from within the organization. And it all starts at the top with the Murray Edwards Mantra of Mediocrity. Never cares about winning a cup, only just wants to get in and cash in on the first round revenue. Imagine how much more revenue he would get if he allowed Conroy to rebuild/retool a roster that would fetch MORE than one round of playoff revenue, or if they ever deign to win a cup.
      The "just get in and see what happens" and "win now" mandate from 2004 has long run its course. It doesn't work anymore. It may be too late this year, but next season get to a better position in the top 10 to get McKenna as the 2026 draft pool is much more deeper. @@noorkidwai No one is saying full rebuild, it's just being realistic about where they are right now and the best path forward. Expending futures to sneak into the playoffs and get blown out is silly. This team will not contend for the Cup with Huberdeau and Kadri as the leading scorers. Zary, Coronato and Pelletier look like good players but will they be great ? Those 3 guys plus Wolf all need new deals - that could be $20m in additional salary with very little coming off the books. Andersson will want $8+ as well, so they could be spend close to $30m more to have the same roster ? Sure those young guys might improve somewhat, but it will be offset by further declines in the 30+ group that is untradeable. Do they want to be in the same place and cost $30m more ? They shouldn't - which is why they should sell high on Andersson right now, miss the playoffs - get the top 10 pick instead of drafting 28th.

    Just draft well. There are so many false narratives around the draft. Who are the best team in Canada today? Winnipeg. Kyle Conner was taken 17th. Hellebuyck 130th. Scheifele 7th. Lowry 67th. Morrissey 13th. Stanley 18th. Perfetti 10th. Pionk undrafted, Appleton 168th etc. etc. Not a single top 5 pick. One in the single digits. It's like the narrative around Mackinnon. Col was a good team, had bad luck (good luck?) in the 48game shortened season, came back with the same team the next year and finished 1st. Mackinnon wasn't a COL "strategy", he was a fluke.

    Everyone understands what Pinder wants and we can all agree that is the best case scenario is getting a bona fide top draft pick. Here's the problem though with that thought process, it's all wishful thinking. The best indicator of the future is past behavior and with that said, I see no reason to believe that anything will ever change in the organizations approach. This ownership group has never willingly sold things down to the bare bones in the past 20 years since the cup run so why would they start doing it now? The success they are having against expectations this year will only hurt them long term because I'm sure there will be a belief internally that they are close. Craig Conroy said DAY 1 of his tenure as GM that he wanted to a Dallas Starts quick turn around retool. Why do we conveniently forget all of that? They aren't changing and never will. This whole thing could have been blown up before last season even started. When they signed Backlund to me that said we are going to stay "competitive" which we all know means the mucky middle.

      They’ve shipped half of the core of the team from the start of last season, for all the complaining about it they could at most move Anderson (they still could next year and get a haul) and maybe Coleman (who they’d probably still have to retain on or wouldn’t get that much) I don’t think there’s nearly as many tradable assets on the team as your making it out to be. I think they did strip the team down and got Kuzmenko trying to revive and flip him this year and signed Mantha as a guy they could trade at the deadline but it’s tough for me to blame them for trying to make the playoffs this year when they’re right in contention for it and all the tradable assets could be trade for almost just as much in the offseason or next season and they still have 5 years left on huberdeau, this could be the only playoff hockey they see for a while. They better not trade any high picks or anything to help this year’s team but I’m fine with them not trading anyone at the deadline this year it doesn’t really change anything to me.

    • @NumbEffect
      @NumbEffect 10 днів тому

      @@ramprat5812 You are right the got rid of expiring contracts last year which was smart but I don't agree with your assessment that last year was a full tear down of this team. The point Pinder has been arguing for a while is be as bad as possible to get top picks which is not going to happen if you still have really good players. My point is further proven by all this talk by your statement and our fanbase of Anderson/Coleman being traded. If they did tear it down as you say, Coleman, Kadri & Andrerson would have been shipped already whether it was last trade deadline or at this past draft. You would have also had a better chance at a higher draft pick in last years draft removing those players and you would have set yourself up to guarantee a top 10 pick the next 2 years. I think we always over value our players and I don't see us getting this huge haul everyone keeps mentioning because if that were the case don't you think the trade would have already happened? I absolutely want this team to be bad to get a franchise defining player but as I said in my original post, I don't believe that any of this is based in reality by the past actions of the management/ownership.

    • @ramprat5812
      @ramprat5812 9 днів тому

      @@NumbEffect I understand what you want but you’re essentially making my point, they already did trade almost every asset that was worth anything last season including guys under team control for this year. They aren’t getting anything of consequence for a Kadri trade with that much term left and they’ll get very little for Coleman who makes a lot of money for a 3rd line winger on a good team so there’s basically one significant tradable asset left, and even the teams that hit the nuclear rebuild button don’t trade every single player and if they do they end up immediately turning and overpaying someone else to be the one vet leader on a terrible team, look at Anaheim, Chicago & San Jose they’ve all done that. The Flames are kind of stuck with a core of guys that they cant trade without retaining and tanking future years but they’re still good enough that they won’t bottom out immediately but imo they likely will in the next couple of years. If all the hand wringing is over trading one guy this year vs next year vs last year, it’s complaining about nothing. Flames fans seem to think that if we just get a top 10 pick for a couple years we can plan the cup parade for 5 years later and when you look at the absolute worst teams in hockey they’re filled with really high picks, it’s still a complete crap shoot. There’s still a good chance they trade Anderson in the off-season or at the deadline next year and get a very similar return (it’s not like it would have been 3 1st round picks if they did it last year)

    greater chance at prolonged conference winners. Arguing that is just ignorant. How do they not understand that picking on top 5 a few times gives you a greater chance at being stars than not. Outside of iginla, and Johnny flames have never had a star. You need a bunch of top picks to be a strong contender

    • @Roory75
      @Roory75 10 днів тому

      I agree with your point, but the Flames have had FAR more star players than that. MacInnis, Theo, Nieuwendyk, Vernon to name a few. Admittedly, they're all back in the 80s/90s though.

      @Mr.Grantosis Fair point, I personally don't understand the extreme distaste for bottoming out. Literally every single team (except vegas) who have won the cup within the past 10 years has had someone on their team, drafted in the top 5 who is a "star."

    • @Mr.Grantosis
      @Mr.Grantosis 10 днів тому +1

      Agreed. Everyone forgets but Tampa was the laughing stock of the league for a decade. And they’ve won multiple cups and was the best team in the league for years. That’s where I wanna see the flames. I’ll be happy with 10 years of pain to see a cup in my lifetime

Dean and Rhett are real good at shitting on Pinder but horseshit at coming up with their own takes. "What are you gonna do Deannn!!" Jeeesus

    Conroy said he wanted to audition guys in the organization to see where they stood. Pretty sure he knows now. This Flames team has been competitive in almost every game they’ve played because they outwork their opponents on most nights. I’m not suggesting they mortgage their future but Craig has to throw them a bone. With 20 million in cap space I don’t see that being a big ask.

    Pinder is taxing to listen to. My question to Rhett would be what would the feeling be in the room if your team has been busting their ass to get into the playoffs, to have the GM say yeah F it, bring in the kids to get a high pick. Pinder is the most negative person. Because he puts all the faith into tanking to get to the top, he's a one-trick pony. The players and the current team will lead into the direction this needs to go. Is it remotely possible they are further ahead than he gives them credit for.

    Unless the Flames can guarantee me the first overall no thanks. Pinder is clueless. Add something. The guys have played and deserve a present. Play hard almost evernight and the veterans are showing the way. Some success now for Coronato Zary Bahl Wolf is huge. In the nhl you never no the next star unless McJesus. Look at just last year's picks in the OHL for Calgary. Parekh Mews Misa Battaglia. All looking great. The star might be there just a year or two away. Didn't mention Pinders boyfriend Basha who could be good to. Should Flames do nothing and get top ten for Rico Fata clone. Reward this team now.

    Let the Flames keep pushing for the playoffs!! Conroy can add a player or two just dont salvage the future.. This is what id do.. I would trade up for Michael Misa!! You have two later first rd picks and you can give a pick in 2026.. Youll all think im crazy but why not!! You would have your number 1 center at 18 years old!! His brother is already in the organization and he plays with Zayne Parekh!! Your future power play everything right there fuck it!! Pull the trigger you have Wolf and with Wolf theres no number 1 pick or top 10 for that matter!! Get Michael Misa !!! Seriously let Schafer go nunber one then make a trade with whoever selects number 2!!

      Literally every team has a higher scorer on their roster than the Flames. Name a team farther from a Cup than the Flames. Is there a team in the league you wouldn't swap rosters and farm teams 1:1 for? The bottom feeders have hope, the contenders have a shot. The Flames are the mushy middlest team in the league.
