I’m 19. Sometimes it was frustrating to grow up today. There were so many things I wasnt allowed to do because they were “too dangerous”. Many things are banned. In my elementary school we werent even allowed to pick things off the ground, from snow to sticks. Meaning snowball fights were forbidden, I pretended a stick was a sword once and had to spend three recesses alone in a room. Kids today are rarely allowed to have fun, so they often give up on it and learn to enjoy the tech given by their parents instead. Boredom can be dangerous, I watched my peers grow up bored, and always being told “no” and not being allowed to have fun. This led some of them to grow up angry, finding temporary relief from boredom in drugs and such when we reached highschool. I’m lucky to have parents that made sure I didn’t have my phone until I was older, that allowed me to play outside and get bruised and grow from it. It’s not fair for children who aren’t that lucky to be blamed for being indoors on technology all day when that’s how their parents raised them, and when school’s today don’t allow play for the sake of “safety”.
my era too - happy days - its the old story I guess - we had little, but had so much fun - no telly - no computers - just active games outside - footy, girls always skipping etc / always on the park - fit as a fiddle - - - but didn;t realise it of course- and the only time we got in to trouble ? - - - - we used to get chased by the police for playing footy in the park when it was closed !!- yes truly happy days - -
I was "Jacks" champ in my primary school in the 70's. Remember playing for hours on cobblestone streets. You only needed a few marbles or ball and some imagination and playmates and it was fun. Mum called you in for supper and after that you had cheap colouring books, comics and puzzles until bedtime. I would'nt swap that for all the high tech and pampering that goes on today. The kids I see today are incredibly self absorbed and seem desperate for attention. Don't see much natural happiness in them.
I keep seeing comments about how these kids were free to play without overprotective adults hovering over them. But what I kept thinking is that I wish kids played this nicely when I was growing up.
I remember it all! The cobbled streets(to give horses traction), children's outside activities and clean sensible wear ready to go anywhere in. Now it seems kids have to have their parents spent a fortune on "protective wear' before they can ride a bike. Nobody wants serous injury, however, bumps and scrapes never hurt anyone, girls included!!
As we ran off to play with pals to adventures and a free run of the city, the only health and safety consisted of a mother shouting after us: "Mind the roads!".
Great to see that's just has is was did you notice not one overweight kid out there they where really enjoyable days I played all of them and I'm still not overweight I'm nearly 78 six foot two fourteen stone play golf three times a week living the dream after doing my fifty years working
I remember most of these games from the 1970s when I was a lad. Some I do not recognise though like the one with four bases set out in a square and a centre base.
I grew up on a council estate in Harlow New Town. It was known as “pram town” because there were so many young families which meant there were so many kids to play with. We played in the street because cars were rare then and we could run around and play the games that the East End families had brought with them. And we weren’t far from green spaces either: the common, fields, woods, Epping Forest were all in a walkable distance. We walked to school, we walked everywhere until Father Christmas brought us a bike or Jako roller skates (all second or third hand) and I would cycle for miles unhampered by traffic. I don’t remember ever being worried by anything that was going on in the world until the Moors Murders and that, I believe, was the end of my childhood.
The toys I had would probably be banned now - chemistry set, meccano, cap guns and an electric train - sharp objects, mains transformers, poisons etc. - I'm glad I grew up then! Yes, there was polio, TB and other diseases caused by poor diet and minimal healthcare, but is today any better - AIDS, autism, diabetes, gender and mental health issues, etc.?
