  • This is the 11th video in a series hosted by Treehouse Master, Pete Nelson, on how to build a safe treehouse platform using our Tree Fort Hardware System. In this video, Pete and his son demonstrate how to install a Tree Fort Paddle TAB.
Our Tree Fort Paddle TABs are used for a variety of ways when you need to attach a structural member to a tree. The Tree Fort Paddle TAB is composed of two sections: the "paddle" sits in a notched beam and the "threaded rod" secures into the tree. They are to be used with thru bolts, rather than screws or lags, making your knee brace more secure to move with the tree. Paddle Tabs are typically used to support lighter platforms, to pick up small unsupported corners and are often incorporated into entry stairways.
Our Tree Fort Hardware System (referred to as "Backyard Hardware" in this video series) is a simplified and more economical version of the standard & heavy duty treehouse hardware we use in larger builds. This Tree Fort Hardware System is designed for small scale builds, think: kid-scale tree forts, sunset decks or tree gazebos.

I'm confused why the beam that you installed the paddle tab doesn't seem to be level w/ the other beam already installed ?

the paddle tab is attached to a joist. it will be level with the other joists that rest atop the beams.

How come the joist isnt just set on top of that beam? I confused why you would need that paddle there.

Would the addition of lock washers be advisable when attaching the joist to the paddle bolt?

Does anyone know how much weight these can hold, I'm planning on making an 8 3/4ths by 13 3/4ths tree house with a couch and cabinates, no electricty or anything but still a fairly big structure and I'm not sure what I should use to hold it up there.

You can attempt to estimate the sheer strength of these bolts based on their thickeness but I would say each bolt is good for 10000+ lbs. 1/2 inch is good for 7100 lbs at least and those main bolts have a 2inch diameter. I'm sure each bolt is enough to park a truck on. But, to be safe it's best to confirm with the manufacturer.
