As a 9 year old kid, flying out the top of megalith was magical. Failed mission after failed mission, I trudged on with my eye on the F-22. After being SAM'ed, Stonehendged, RUD'ed, and destroyed in many other ways. Hearing that last dialogue.. "Heroes really do exist.." was the most inspiring moment a video game has ever bestowed upon me. This game is simply a masterpiece.
Ace Combat 4 was one of the biggest games of my childhood. My dad, my brothers and I would all sit down in front of this old tube tv on the floor and play it at night taking turns together. Oh I miss it so much. I want a remaster for Xbox One so badly. Idc if they did nothing but make it available for Xbox with literally zero improvements I’d be happy. I miss those days when we were all happy.

One of the greatest stories ever.. Countless hours of gameplay...one of the best games ever made. It really makes u feel like you're in the game and you are the main character.. Nice job.. Good review
The story in Ace Combat 4 is not only the best, it's also extremely complex. The story is told by a boy who was adopted by the yellow squadron, your enemies. In other words, it tells a story of one child who tells the story of a war from his eyes. He explains that war isn't good vs. evil, not blue and red; but gray. It also tells a story that there are no winners in any conflict, but there are heros.
JPgamerTV same. Took me a year to beat level 2 when i was really young but now i can get S rank with one hand... i feel like I should be sad but playing this game is never a waste of my time
I got bored today so I hooked up my PS2, shoved in Ace Combat 4 and I’m already half way through this incredible game for the first time in over ten years. Such a beautiful game.
I found Ace Combat 4 on a personal quest to get a "home console" version of a flight arcade game I watched my dad play at an old Chucky Cheese. It all started at the local Hollywood Video back in Arkansas. I can't remember exactly how old I was when I first layed eyes on the case, but the whole, "choose between this cool looking fighter game or a LarryBoy game" is a very accurate description of what it was like to buy games back then. You didn't have video reviews, IGN, adverts, or any of that crap. The only info you had on any game at that time was what was on its cover. Sometimes if you were lucky you could read the instruction manual to find out more. All of that aside, I remember renting AC4 for the first few weeks of playing it. I loved it for the same reasons we're all here today, and I've continued to love the series ever since. I eventually decided to ask my mom to buy it. Best decision I ever made. I still have the same copy today.
It's probably my favorite Ace Combat game. I love AC5 too, but AC4 has a good amount of charm and there's some kind of simplicity to it. The narrative also has some kind of nuance with its melancholic and somber tone. And the graphics were phenomenal for a PS2 game that came out in 2001. And it also ran at 60 fps. The graphics hold up even to this day. And the soundtrack is just...wow...seriously, listening to an OST still gives me goosebumps. The OST was always one of the strongest points of Ace Combat (unless we're talking about Assault Horizon because fuck that game), but the music in 4 sticks with me the most.
I think the simplicity of Mobius 01's experience in the Continental War is what (maybe accidentally) ups the "badass" things that go down in 4 to "legendary". You've written a great comment by the way, really captured the vibe I think we all felt as kids experiencing Comona, one I've never felt from playing something like the Witcher or Mass Effect or watching a superhero movie.
I've finished playing this game last month, as well as Zero. By the time I'm writing this it's 5 years since this video's release. It's my first game I've ever played on a PS2 controller, as well as controlling a plane. Dogfighting took me a lot more tries to make it work, but indeed, when I actually reached the target score for dogfight-focused mission, there's still plenty of time left to make some quick buck to get more planes, or just raising scores. It's fun. This game's confidence in identity is to me the selling point of this game, and the control of the plane's absolutely amazing, even tho I have severe skill issues. And so, I write to you...
I loved Tango Line's OST and the score attack missions. Even on ACE it's fairly easy so it feels great to keep increasing your score until you find the perfect run and become the cool flying death machine the game sets you up to be.
Your story about how you found the game is so much like my own. Mom took my brother and me to Blockbuster oh so many years ago to rent a game for each of us. I saw Ace Combat 04 and thought "well this looks like it could be cool" and took it home. Fell in love, pleaded with my mother to own it, and I've been a diehard fan of the franchise ever since.
I didn't play 5 and Zero until much later, but I did have Ace Combat 4 pretty early on, and I love all of them. Not that they're perfect - 5 in particular has some really dumb story points in hindsight, but even so they're all great.
I love the bipolar narrative of these games. On one hand you're an indestructible God of death in the sky, while on the other hand the stories show the struggles and pains of being in the middle of war. So perfect.
WOOO. This was prob the first game I bought, because I knew my bros loved the series, and played all games, and man it was a blast. Even years later, I still play all the games.

Ctrl c/v'd my comment from another AC04 vid: I had the exact opposite introduction to AC04 than most of my peers. I played it after I was introduced to AC7. I bought a PS2 specifically to play the holy trilogy of Ace Combat games, and I played them in chronological order - Zero, 4 and 5. I was completely mesmerized by AC7 with how gorgeous it was, and I wanted to understand WTF was going on, so I got the PS2 trilogy. I played a bunch of PS2 games back when I was a kid, but I was blown away with just how FUCKING AWESOME the original trilogy were. I didn't care about the original PS2 graphics, I was completely astonished at how well the complete package has aged. The stories and gameplay completely overshadow any of the dated graphics, and still hold up incredibly well into the 2020s, TWENTY YEARS after AC04 came out. I even listen to the soundtrack when I'm on my motorcycle. I feel a level of happiness that no other game had ever delivered, and gives me an even deeper love of my job as a fighter jet technician in the USAF. Ace Combat is the greatest game series I have ever played. As a SSgt in the USAF, I recommend the game series to anyone involved with fighter jets, because I've encountered a game series more rewarding and well-crafted than any other game I have ever played. I even have a custom modified flightsuit and nomex jackets with lore correct patches for Cipher and Trigger from how obsessed with the series I've become. I'm absolutely plastered at the moment, so please excuse how fanboy I'm getting right now.
I am going to explain how I got Ace Combat 4. My cousin was visiting back in 2002 and she asked me what game to buy her brother( who was my age and didn't visit us) so I just randomly chose Ace Combat 4 when we went to gamestop. In 2005 I visited my uncle and I found Ace Combat 4 and a PS2 on the closet. I took it out and started to play it. The story, music, planes and everything else captivated me. I went to my cousin and bought the game from him. My aunt later came and gave me my money back and said I could keep it and later went and hit my cousin with the belt. This is the insane part. My uncle and his family are real millionaires.....my family lived in a 2 bedroom apartment. As a kid I never understood why she did that but as an adult...yeah
The day I got Ace Combat 4 (my first Ace Combat game) it was just a random bargain bin score at gamestop. I stayed up playing until 5am, and finally decided to go to bed because I could feel my heart beating in my chest. At that point in time the replay with the camera shake and satellite imagery terrain, was the best graphics I had ever seen in a video game. The music, the interface with cool animated diagram at the end of the mission, the story which has no business being that good in an arcade flight sim. Legendary game.
Glad I had the chance to play all of these games. I have played all but AC3, AC6, ACX. Rented Air Combat. Owned 2,4,5,0 on Sony Consoles and now 7 for PC. I hope this series goes on as long as Final Fantasy :D
fantastic game. It did really well to make you feel actual fear. It built up the yellow squad and Stonehenge to be these all powerful weapons and enemies.
By far the most amusing tidbit of immersion in the game for me was the feeling of how the war itself was going created by in-game dialog, and how your character is acknowledged to be a big deal in-universe. In the beginning, you really do get a feeling of "Shit, they really have us on the fence." and it contrasts very well against the later stages (IE: the end of the war) where the enemy are all freaking out because you have THEM on the fence. "Hey, look! It's the plane with the ribbon insignia! Mobius One is here!" "You're not going to believe this, Jean-Louis! All of them have ribbon insignias!"
Don't hate on Tango Line, that level is great. The music I think is great, Stonehenge attacks help break up the flow, and that area to the north with the VTOL bases is great as it forces you to do straight vertical dive bombs to take them out. The worst mission in the game is easily the missile intercept one.

I'd like to see your take on AC 3 . when I first played it I wanted more of 2, but I've come to think that it's one of the best in the series. Very slick futuristic style. Lots of levels where you actually have to be a good pilot. Sick aircraft designs based on augmented versions of real jets or just fictional ones. No voice over just text telling you what's going on all the time. It leaves it up to your imagination to provide voices for the text and pretend that Namco wasn't just too cheap to hire actors I don't care if it's an OLd GaMe .. If you like ace combat you'll probably enjoy it. There is one voice over actually. Literally one. Hope you enjoy the sound of the words 'Bull's' and 'eye'.
@@mrandrossguy9871 the Japanese version is definitely the definitive one. I didn't get to play that version as a kid though so that's why the game felt oddly unfinished.
As someone who’s actively more than half way through my first ever play through of this game, yeah it’s great, I agree with everything. But the score-based objectives aren’t really my big issue, more so the idea that you won’t know without trial and error if a mission will have a second phase. Mission 8 for example gave me so much trouble because after taking such a long time to master the strategy of who to target first and so forth, little did I know I would have to maintain missiles for what’s left of the bombers at the end. Maybe that’s just me, idk.
Late to the game in the comments section of this video, however if I might say Ace Combat 4 was ahead of it's time back then. I dearly miss this game and wish ever so much for them to remaster a version of it. It is honestly imo the best Ace Combat game.
Hey Oboe I just wanted to ask, I know jokes and memes are the main theme in your videos. But didn't you tried for once to be objectif in one of your videos because I'm an idiot who can't joke? (That last part is true I'm serious)
After three years and two hundred thousand subscribers later, I have returned! To tell you I actually really like tango line, it's a fun mission, I didn't even hate it when I got shot down in the last 2 seconds by Stonehenge.
Its actually this: O'her blue skies and emerald plains where our freedom and justice prevail. With courage and strength we'll fight to the end for liberty in our land.
Tango line! (sigh) (Eye roll) I like the 53,000ft altitude max. all other games are 35-38 Nothing to see or fight up there but you can launch missiles into space!
@Laserbreak Simple: don't crash 😎 Lmao I'm kidding, enemy spacing was a lil annoying but stonehenge wasn't really an issue for me, I always fly low and between the mountains. My favorite part of the mission is divebombing the vtol bases with dumb bombs
Idk man, nothing feels quite like fully clearing the score attack missions. Especially the tango line because it's spread out. Certainly the hardest one to 100%
While this isn't one of your "obscure games from yesteryear" videos, I really think you need to do a playthrough of Zeno Clash. It's good. Weird, but good.

Mission 8 for example gave me so much trouble because after taking such a long time to master the strategy of who to target first and so forth, little did I know I would have to maintain missiles for what’s left of the bombers at the end. Maybe that’s just me, idk.
Fuck, I already liked the video, but then you made that solid subscribe joke, and now I need to like it again.
So glad you brought up blockade’s music
I know it's not related to Ace Combat 7 in any way, but could you do a review of Ace Combat X? I loved that game!
Never mind, I found it.
Tango Line was a real pain, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Great vid just one thing: Tango Line is an absolute banger
I would play this game more but the old PS2 controllers hurt my hand
Bungie when cod began to get popular 2:08. :edit thx for the like bro. #australia
Ace Combat 4: 20 minutes to obliterate legions of targets
Ace Combat 7: 30 seconds to fight God
Late to the game in the comments section of this video, however if I might say Ace Combat 4 was ahead of it's time back then. I dearly miss this game and wish ever so much for them to remaster a version of it. It is honestly imo the best Ace Combat game.
You didn't mention the hidden planes you can shoot down. The SR-71 was a little frustrating
Are we getting an Ace Combat 4 remaster?!
They need to remaster this fr
I actually just picked this up for about $2.50 on ebay. Looking forward to playing it sometime!
You are the Dunkie of AC and I love it
Over blue skies and emerald planes where justice and freedom pro-vale with courage and strength will fight to the end for liberty in our land
Its actually this:
O'her blue skies and emerald plains where our freedom and justice prevail. With courage and strength we'll fight to the end for liberty in our land.
@@ocddisco1239 weehee
I like the voice acting, why do people insist on boring emotionless voice acting that gives no uniqueness to the game
I got into ace combat the same way as you but with 5 instead of 4
I love the tango line music
This was peak ace combat. Everything about it was pretty perfect
I... I liked Tango Line.
The music was kinda jungley and dive bombing the Harrier bases was fun as shit.
Tango line! (sigh) (Eye roll)
I like the 53,000ft altitude max. all other games are 35-38
Nothing to see or fight up there but you can launch missiles into space!
This was my favorite game at 11 but I miss all the radio chatter one newer games
That probably would have made the jet mission from BF3 if it had Comona playing over it
Ace combat 4 was the greatest PS2 game of all time
Very strong claim considering the PS2 has the greatest software library of all-time...
Dang, I don't know why people hate Tango Line so much, I actually love that mission
Good mission
Good theme
Until you crash and have to restart all over again
@Laserbreak Simple: don't crash 😎
Lmao I'm kidding, enemy spacing was a lil annoying but stonehenge wasn't really an issue for me, I always fly low and between the mountains. My favorite part of the mission is divebombing the vtol bases with dumb bombs
You are flawed and will be recycled shortly. Please do not scream during the Procedure as it may frighten the nanobots and lead to improper recycling.
First Ace Combat game I played, I think? Just got the 7th one. I think I got this and Conflict: Desert Storm for Christmas or my bday the same year?
Idk man, nothing feels quite like fully clearing the score attack missions. Especially the tango line because it's spread out. Certainly the hardest one to 100%
While this isn't one of your "obscure games from yesteryear" videos, I really think you need to do a playthrough of Zeno Clash. It's good. Weird, but good.
This game i probably have the greatest connection with... might be because the game is about as old as i am.
I went and bought a ps2 and and the 3 ace combat games you were right they're amazing
Yellow 13. If the entire game was just that story it was worth the watch.
