Decades ago I was in the grocery store, and saw this video (VCR) for sale in the bin for $5.00. Great video! It was released by HBO, and was bugged so that it was impossible to copy it.Today, I'd be afraid to play it...the tape would probably break! Glad to see it up on the net!
I feel as though jazz is the only genre which would really allow this to happen. The “Standard” allows each artist a common tapestry to work with in a way which doesn’t limit their expression. I just couldn’t see this happening with a bunch of rock, or whatever, guys.
What do you mean, “holds his own”? Jumbo was a master jazz player. Maybe it should have been, “Chuck holds his own”. He was a pop guy and he went minimalist for sure, but it worked. But Chuck playing with Dizzy, Don Cherry, Al, and Maynard he was the bottom.
@@SaxMan426 Of all these players I like Mangione the best( in this video)...Ferguson was a bit all over the place, and Al was going crazy up and down...Gillepsie was too out there....Chuck may have been been a bit mainstream but his improvising was to my taste
I taped this on VCR. Many years ago....My Two Idols on the same stage Maynard Ferguson and Al Hirt !!!!!!
Pure talent all the way around. All these musicians were super pros.
Has there ever been this much talent on stage together?
Wowed me out the window!! Great !!
Holy Crap! What a gathering of awesome talent on one stage!!!!!!! I'm blown away! God, to have been there in person!!!!!!!!

Truly a moment caught in time.

Al easily holds his own with all these guys. This was a historic summit of trumpet talent.

@@SaxMan426 Ha. You are right. I wrote that 5 years ago. What was I saying! AL was a virtuoso.

Awesome group. Serious AllStar action.
First soloist looks like Don Cherry, is that right?
(...Hey man, Don Cherry was a unique and major innovative artist beginning in the '60s -- he's as significant as any of the other cats up there.)
recorded at Storyville.
New Orleans,Louisiana
