Eric Woolfson is who actually wrote the music and lyrics and created the concepts to their albums. It ceased being the Project when Eric and Alan parted and went separate ways.
The first handful of the Project albums are excellent indeed, my favorite of which is the Pyramid album (1978) dealing with man facing his own mortality,... or feeble attempts to evade it.

Love the Alan Parsons project. Much maligned by many Yacht rock to some . To me classic well written pop songs with a prog tinge. Ian Bairnsons's guitar is always a genius combination of tone and melodic soloing.

Hallo Manfred, alles frisch ?

Wow 1977- sophomore/junior in high school..went to a party…plenty of herb and LSD…. Heard this entire album in a basement with black lights and fluorescent lights and posters…playing on stereo-playin pool(billiards lol ), and ping pong-good friends, laughter and THIS album Loudly in the background!
Great music for road trip too! ❤

Pat Benatar covered "Don't Let It Show" on her 1979 In the Heat of the Night album.

I wonder if Jim knows Pat Benatar😅 she is American and her high time was the 80s - if you watched Jim' s favourite albums... as he says, he didn't know much about american music of this period... Pat Benatar has many great Songs, I like her voice and just listened to the album Wide awake in Dreamland yesterday, All fired up is a great opener - it simply rocks😊

This was my first listen to this album as well Jim, and I very much enjoyed it. Interestingly, David Paton, Ian Bairnson and Duncan Mackay also played on Kate Bush's first two albums. They were very much EMI's 'go to' session musicians.

The band Pilot form the nucleus (har har) of the musicians backing Parsons and Woolfson on this one. It was the guys in Ambrosia on the debut, and Parsons produced Ambrosia's first album, as well as Pilot's 1974 hit single "Magic". So there was a lot of "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" going on.

I bet plenty of people used Alan Parsons LPs to test their audio systems back in the day. Great production! I've only listened to I Robot and Eye in the Sky myself. Should listen to a few more, I think!

I actually use a section from 'Endless Dream' off of Talk by Yes. :-) also enjoy the use of the song 'Rejigue(sp?)' by Alan Parsons. Forget the album. Sorta recent. Lol 30 yrs ago? Haha

Coming from Pink Floyd, I started with I robot, then collected all albums from APP.
And now you're telling me Steve Harley was one of the singers 😂 something I never realized.
Steve Harley and Cockney rebel, one of my other favorites! Sebastian and Make me smile being my all time favorites.

If you do some more APP, i would recommend the albums Pyramid, The Turn of a Friendly Card, Eye in the Sky and Ammonia Avenue. APPs albums are pretty much all concept albums. Strong themese throughout.

Big big BIG album! "I wouldn't Want To Be Like You" still a regular part of my playlists.....
I was 9 when this came out ,and id recently moved from Idaho to central Washington , which had more population and influence from Seattle radio stations. Music like this had been unavailable to me outside of movies, so I was immediately smitten. This is the time in my life I discovered punk , post punk , electronica( I now had access to record stores that had Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield , and JMJ....) and the early rumblings of the coming BHM invasion.....none of which I had access to earlier. Years 10 - 12 really set me up for the 80s. I got to enjoy all of it in ways most of my friends didn't ( some never did , others took a couple decades to catch up 😂).

The intro to the second track, beginning at 10:34 is so cool: very subtle use of that suspended chord progression, the bassline and the pauses to build up a brooding sense of anticipation/unease:, the feel of something unknown waiting to happen. This could very well have been from the soundtrack to some tv thriller at the time. And it shows what Alan learnt from working with Pink Floyd: they did those kinds of transitions many times.

Jim, you are a delight to experience these albums with. You made two comments so far about that 70’s studio sound and I love it too. I particularly love so much music from like 76-83. It’s my golden era. Cheers sir!

Fun fact - Alan Parsons set up the mics and amps and cables etc for The Beatles rooftop performance.

I bought the first Alan Parsons Project album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" which was brilliant. I also bought this as well and remember it well. Trying to remember if it was this album or the next "Pyramid" which I went to the local cinema when I was at Uni to listen to with a lightshow. Have a feeling it might have been "pyramid" now I think about it. Sort of thing we did back in the 70's !!! PS Lead Vocal on Breakdown is Allan Clarke of Hollies fame. Pat Benetar covered "Don't Let It Show".

This one, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, and Turn of a Friendly Card are his best for me, followed by 'Eve' and 'Eye in the Sky'.
Never really warmed up to 'Pyramid'.

    Good evening Jim,
Yes, I do know this album. Bought it in the late seventies. This was my second APP album; the first one was The turn of a friendly card.
The first five albums were great, especially the Tales of mystery and imagination by Edgar Alan Poe album; the first album by APP.
Don’t mention disco 🤨😅. I hated most of disco. It was when the deteriorating of music began. Cheap mass produced ‘music’ that all sounded more or less the same. Thirteen in a dozen as we say in the Netherlands. I hated punk even more by the way.

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  Рік тому +1

Haha! Well, you have to admit it does have a funky disco feel in places!

      @@JimNewstead i totally agree.
I mentioned that I didn’t hate all of disco 😜. For example I liked I feel love by Donna Summer but that was mainly because of the great synthesizer sounds by Georgio Moroder.; I hope I typed his name correctly.
