    So many people to thank today. First, I think, is Amanda Jo for staying on top of things so we had real-time notification of the eruption. Hope your doctor's appointment went well and you're in the pink of health. Next Shawn, for jumping right on this and giving us his scientific insight. Johann, thanks again. Looking forward to tomorrow's flight. Bruce for his, as usual, stellar analysis and graphics. Props to the mods to being available at such short notice. Blows my mind that one of you is doing this from NZ! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    The playing field is changing rapidly now. We have a very established ridge where the fissures are happening, and now it is simply a slight difference of 1 or 2 degrees in the fissure orientation, or a shift of 50M east or west which really determines where the bulk of the lava goes. Such a major difference between the north flow going west and the south flow going east as the fissures cross the established ridge. Also the difference that the 20M or so in elevation of the source at the ridge makes in the velocity of the initial flows and how that inertia plays out downsream. That northern river is still booking along 3-4KM from the source, which shows how the difference in the temperature of the ground makes in keeping the temp high and the viscosity low further from the source. This eruptive cycle is definitely still on the steep upslope of the learning curve. Curious if we will again see a late eruption to the north like last time. What a great time to be retired. ;-)

    A comment on the sound. It sounds like you have your voice is being duplicated two times with a few milliseconds of delay which causes the kind of phasey effect. The cause might be because you are probably sending the microphone sound both directly and also thru some other thing, maybe your video mixer software?

    Hey Shawn, what I noticed next to the small amount of EQ prior to the eruption, is a similarity with the March events. March 16th and yesterdays eruption both had an intrusion approximately 14 days prior (March 2nd and November 4th intrusions). Both small intrusions were followed in short time (~14 days later) by an eruption. Both eruptions had very little warning time and very few EQ before eruption started. Like the system was set and ready for the slightest trigger in the system to go off.
    Maybe something to let your thoughts go over and pointing out in an next update? Would love to hear your thoughts about that.

    14:00 That building that was destroyed at the parking lot of the Blue Lagoon was a luggage storage for day visitors. Many visitors book a day at the BL while they just arrived from the airport (or on their way to the airport). The shed would allow them to store their luggage attended and warm instead of in their car.
    The CEO of BL said in an interview a few months ago that it was just a temporary shed because the old one had to be removed for the berms and they were already planning a more definitive structure. So I don't think there is much lost by the lava destroying that building. Also it was empty as BL was evacuated and I did see people moving things out of it about an hour prior to the lava arriving at the parking.

    Wonder if Blue Lagoon losing half of its parking space to lava will delay its re-opening. I bet they will just put some rocks and sand on top of the lava once it has cooled down enough to drive over it, put a fresh asphalt coat on it, re-open and pretend nothing happened.
    NVM about half the parking, wrote that before seeing the later pictures. Completely gone. Still betting on the lagoon re-opening as soon as the lava has cooled down enough to pave over it though.

    It was a full moon a few days ago, the extra stress on the subsurface could be the trigger for the eruption, there have been many coincidental eruptions since the start (not always, but a lot). Thoroughly enjoy your channel.

    • @michaelfoster-qw2tw
      @michaelfoster-qw2tw 3 години тому

      "Full moon tidal stresses" on lava are minimal. Tectonic plate movement creates far more stress; or, in this case, relieves the stress. The North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart, allowing the magma to rise through the opening cracks. The lava pressure is only great relative to us little people.

    Losing the parking lot and the back entrance to the Blue Lagoon is going to be logistically complicated if they want to reopen.
    If it is requiring less and less stress for a new eruption to occur, is it possible at some point for a fissure, or more likely a vent or two, I suppose, to open up and then just not close, with a constant low level of lava coming up from the deeper magma resevoir for weeks, or months?

    It would seem that the longer the magma sits quietly underneath the surface, the less likely it would cause earthquakes when continuing its emergence because the dykes and fissures may have already have been formed during the initial quakes and are thus already filled with magma and ready to be pushed without thunderous activity above the surface in what can realistically be considered a continuous event from the initial eruptions/quakes until now.

    Mountain View, California here. Thank you again, as usual, for the detailed geologic assessment. QUESTION: Noting the small magnitude and number of earthquakes during the current eruption, does this mean that the fissure now does not have much resistance to uplift, and the magma has an easier time getting to the surface?

    • @PeloquinDavid
      @PeloquinDavid 2 години тому

      Good question. I too was surprised that the magnitude of the tremors was so low.
      I realize that volcanic "earthquakes" in a place with diverging plates like Iceland are a very different beast from those of a slip-fault system like in southern Califormia or of a subduction-zone megathrust, but it would be interesting to know how to interpret variations in Iceland's typically lower-magnitude tremors...
