So I did this myself a few years ago and have been adding as new albums come out. My list is at 47. So I must have a few that you did not count even thought I also thought I did "studio albums only." but I guess after I look at all your vids I will know what you did not include . Anyway: 47. Old Ways, 46. A letter Home, 45. This Notes for You, 44. Everybody Rocken, 43. Landing on Water, 42. Piece Trail, 41. Hawks and Doves, 40. Life, 39. Trans, 38. The Visitor, 37. Chrome Dreams 2 and 36.Fork in the Road. I look foward and watching are others!
Looking forward to this series. I'm staying away from the archive releases right now as there's just so much of his I already enjoy and I've got limited space. Good call on not included the Stills Young Band album 😬, that album makes me needlessly angry, lol.
I’m hoping you’re flexible enough with your “no live albums” rule that you don’t skip Time Fades Away, an album of all-new (at the time) material, definitely intended to be “the next Neil Young” album, that just happens to have been recorded live. I’ve never heard it as it seems to be one of those “lost” albums that fell out of print and Young stubbornly refuse to have reissued (similar to how On The Beach was for most of my life) but it’s got a strong rep these days with some saying it’s kind of a thematic piece with On The Beach and Tonight’s the Night. (For that matter, Rust Never Sleeps is also actually a live record with the audience noise edited out, but presumably you’ll be willing to overlook that.)
Time Fades Away is definitely going to be part of this. Live albums composed of all new songs totally count. I'll bet if you keep looking you can find a copy of Time Fades Away. I've come across them from time to time. I found mine in a record store in LA while I was there on vacation in the mid-90s. I had no idea the record even existed and when I saw the cover and title I thought it looked like the coolest thing ever. I wouldn't say I was let down when it came time to spin it.
So. I have about a dozen Neil records, and none of them are the ones in this video. I guess that means, I only have the good stuff 🤣. Anyway, looks like you'll be plenty busy with this series for a long time. Looking forward to the next one.
Looking forward to this series, especially when you get passed the least enjoyable. Agree with most of your choices for the bottom of his catalogue and although Neil hits more often than he doesn’t, I also heartily agree that he can be dull, plodding and too direct/obvious on some of his songs. Already curios what’s in your top 10 but will make a prediction that the ditch trilogy will figure prominently. You don’t have to answer that. Better to keep it a surprise. 😎
We are some of the few who enjoy Everybody's rockin. I saw Neil acoustic at a theater For the encore the entire shocking pinks wete here in costume and a Cadillac convertible. They did a short killer set and then got into the caddy. The stafe doors opened and the drove off the stage onto a city street
I don’t dislike Hawks and Doves as much as you, in part because Little Wing is among one of my favourite songs. But a song does not an album make, right?
I enjoyed Old Ways always did. You are right about the live international harvester album. It cooks. I saw that tour plus it has a massive song called Grey Ridee that's in my top 10 Life had 2 top notch songs. Mideast vacation and Inca queen. The rest is dull. Are you passionate has grown on me. I also don't really consider it Booker T Mgs without Steve cropper. Fork doesn't do much for me except Light a Candle which I love I hate letter home. Probably my least favorite Storytone is a snooze fest. Orchestra or solo just meaningless melodies Place Trail and visitor are not favorites with me
When you let your political ideology skew your album ranking, you lost me. If I let my political ideology skew my musical tastes, it would lead me to not listening to Neil at all. Thankfully, I can set it aside.
@@lostmixtapes you seemed to have missed the point. A few of Neil’s albums I really like are Greendale and Living with War. If I let my political ideology cloud whether I liked or disliked these albums instead of on their musical merit then I would never listen to them and “rank” them very low on a scale. There are “right wing” artists or songs that I may agree with the message, but have no interest in listening to because the music doesn’t appeal to me.
I just discovered Ragged Glory. Don't know how it escaped my attention 34 years ago. It's kick-ass awesome.

Thanks! Cool to see your list. I messed up the counting at least once with this countdown.
Neil Young's father Scott was a very good sports writer in Canada.

Yeah, not a fan of that one either.
@@lostmixtapes May I humbly suggest a listen to Fountainblue? Some tasty vocals and guitar work. Not Neil’s best record, though, no question.
@@fitzelectricbar I’ll give it a listen. Don’t really remember any of the songs except the title track.

Time Fades Away was re-released recently on vinyl and c.d..

So much good stuff. Kind of crazy when I look at what’s going to be in the top 20 to 25.

Oh I think it’s safe to assume that. :)
My favorite Neil album from the eighties is Everybody's Rockin.I have been buying his music since 1974.
Me to,I have that album as well, not many NEIL YOUNG fans love it,I for one think its an interesting record.

Must have been quite the shock after Rust Never Sleeps. That’s a good song though.
@@lostmixtapes indeed! I feel like Hawks and Doves is the beginning of his weakest stretch of albums that didn’t end until Freedom.

Cool you saw that tour. Need to play that live album again sometime.
Landing On Water better than Hawks & Doves....really!
Could never get into Hawks and Doves. Maybe someday.

Politics is about people. There needs to be more political discourse in struggling democracies, not less.

@@msa4998 We all need to reject right-wing ideology these days. It's unalloyed Christo-fascism.
