I'm currently in the process of making shaker doors for my kitchen cabinets and plan on using those hinges. Seeing the process of installing them explained so simply has made me look forward to that part of the job. Thanks
I'm installing very similar hinges, only difference being mine is 1/2" overlay, and this is the best video I found for my situation. No one explained the actual hanging of the door as well as you, so thumbs up for that! I went with the Kreg jig, though. The Rockler is more versatile and durable, and will probably last a lot longer for someone who does this sort of thing often. But the Kreg is half the price and actually has positions for the door screws as well, taking more of my lack of woodworking skills out of the equation.
HavokStrifeX thank you! I am glad you found it useful. I may actually look into that Kreg one. I literally just melted some of the plastic on the rockler using a new drill I got. 🤣
I'm in/was in the same boat. I was looking at the Rockler jig ($70) when I saw the kreg one ($30). The Rockler doesn't include the bit which kreg does but kreg uses a proprietary bit by the sounds of it vs Rockler with a standard 3/8" shank (long) bit. Though, with the comment of melting the Rockler, it kinda throws that minor justification out of the window.
After building many cabinets, strongly recommend you use a self centering drill bit for drilling and installing screws in the hinge. No way you will get all screws centered perfectly and straight without.
While I agree vix bit is a good idea, I think being "mostly centered" works for these hinges because they can be adjusted in all three axis after being installed. But for anyone installing traditional slide mounts, vix bit is absolutely mandatory. That little "schooch" as you tighten the screw is all you need to see to know that you should have used a self centering bit. LOL
Good video. Installing many cabinet doors (using that Rockler hole jig) on built in shelves, it is a great product. With multiple doors, also made a jig with overlay distance down from top of shelves. The jig was worth the effort, hold flush then screw. Like you said, the job was easier than first thought. Thanks for encouragement to tackle the job.
As soon as I heard "prepared to be dazzled," spoken in a sardonic tone, I knew I'd heard that voice many times before, many years ago. Wild Boars For Life! Also, very informative video.
Excellent work, one of the best tutorials around in my opinion. Very straightforward process and it looks like it might be a good idea to just build a "budget" face frame and door (out of scrap, or cheaper wood) to try out the process a couple of times until you're comfortable. Then jump into the real deal with confidence. I'll try this out at home soon!

Hi Jason, I just stumbled across your video on cabinet hinges because I want to replace my worn out Blum 32.160.01 hinges, and wanted to know if the Blum 33's will work? Thanks for all of your hard work !
Awesome simple video. Thanks! If I'm doing 1/2 inch overlay or 3/8 inch overlay hinges on face frame, what would adjusting the tab 3 mm to 4mm or 5mm do? Will it help bring the cabinbet door more flush to the face to reduce the gap when door is closed? Or would it work on a different plane and change the overlay dimensions? Thanks!
Good tips , the only thing I do different is after drilling the hinge hole , I set both hinge in the holes and instead of using a square, just lay a straight edge across 2 or more hinges . When they are aligned in a straight line they are also perpendicular to the edge and square. Hold the straight edge Guide to the hinges and Mark all the holes in one shot.
Thanks for you instruction. Great job! One question I assume is taken for granted. But as a novice are your hinges 3/4”. I have a 3/4” overlap on existing doors but I only saw 1/2” or 1 1/4” hinges for purchase. Which should I purchase? Thanks!

It would have been nice to reference the Rockler part # of hinge you are using , since there is a staggering amount of different hinges to choose from !!!
Great video. I should have watched before I built/installed my firs cabinet. My problem: the face is squared but I messed up when attached to cabinet (followed walls/ceiling for alignment, duh!) and now it is not leveled causing the doors to be crooked. I really don’t want to remove the whole face (glued and nailed). Question: do you have any suggestion on how to fix this? Thanks
Jason Bent - Bent's Woodworking I forgot to mention that the shin worked. I did on one side and on the other I was able to adjust. Thank you so much for the help
I watched your video on installing hidden hinges, but the cabinet doors I have, have a 45 degree edge and I cannot get the doors to be flush against the cabinet, and also not allowing the cabinets to open 110 degrees. Is there an adjustment that I have to do in order for the door to open all the way and be flush when the cabinet is closed?
I have cabinet over the sink, so it is horizontal. Not vertical as you show in the video. My door has strut supports in addition to soft closing hinge. So I try to replace the hinge which is really difficult task. I am not sure if I have to remove the strut first or not. Can you give a hint how to replace the hinge?
It will just be a different hinge. If you have a Rockler near you, they typically have demo doors with different hinges on display. That will be very helpful in you search and planning 👍😊
Is there a way to remove a cabinet door with these hinges that won't mess with adjustments? We just had our kitchen remodeled and have these exact hinges, I wanted to pop off a couple doors to paint the walls beside them.
Hello, great video! My contractor converted my kitchen cabinets from exposed hinges to concealed, soft close hinges. When i did the walkthrough yesterday, I noticed a couple of things. One, the hinges show on the outer edge of the doors! Two, they don't really soft close correctly. I asked the contractor if he set the hinges too close to the edge, causing them to show, and he said no, that it he had moved them further from the edge then there would be a big gap between both doors at the opening. What???? Your thoughts?
Well it could be a few things. Soft clothes European-style hinges are developed and sold based off of overlay of the doors. So depending on how much overlay there currently was with the exposed hinges, it could’ve caused this issue. It’s kind of hard to explain. Basically replacing the hinges that the doors were originally made for with hinges that may not work, which appears to be the case in this scenario will always cause issues. I don’t think it’s normal that you can see part of the hinges but it’s probably based on the original size door.
@@bentswoodworking Thanks...do you think if he had used different concealed hinges that it would have worked? He bored the hole so that about 1/8-1/4" of the edge of the round part of the hinge is sticking out. I told him that he shouldn't have bored the hole so close to the edge; and he told me that if he'd done that then the doors would have a gap in the center. that is, the dishes sitting in the cabinet would show! I'm having trouble believing that there's nothing he could have done differently to make it work.
Thank you. It would have been nice if you had a test door installed a bit incorrectly. Then you could perhaps used the various adjustments to true the door. Do you already have such a video?
Very educational and instructional! Thank you for that. Getting ready to build some garage cabinets first then move on to other projects in the house. I will be buying the woodpeckers mini square and the Rockler hinges. What was the mini t square you used to mark the 3/4 line on the face frame?
If you use a lot of hinges you should get hooked up with HDL out of Minnesota and buy Blum hinges for a lot less money than what you are paying at Rockler for a generic hinge. They would even set you up with a Blum hinge boring machine for free in exchange for your Blum hinge and slide business.
I'm installing half overlay hinges on a series of shaker cabinets. How do I prevent the hinge screws from running into each other for the hinges that share a cabinet partition?? Cabinet is built with 3/4" material. Thanks!
Thanks very much, super helpful. Question: How much overlay is on the hinge side? And is it also 3/4 inch overlay on the side where the handle goes? Thank you.
If my sides that the hinges are mounted to are only( 1-5/8"w ) will these hinges still work. I see alot of people making theirs 2w" wide ,but $$$was a factor concerning the home owner so I made theirs 1-5/8 w so I could get 2 runs out of every 3-1/2 wide
A MUCH easier way to ensure the hinges are aligned before putting in the 2 screws is to place both hinge cups in the holes, then place a straight edge (like a level) across the backs of each hinge. Hold everything tight, then drill the two screw holes. Perfect alignment every time. Not like the wiggly way you did it.
If I'm putting the door flush with the face frame will I need to just fix a scrap of wood to the inside of the unit to fix the hinge too. Sorry if obvious question noob here
@@bentswoodworking enjoyed watching you're videos recently. Just about to collect my first table saw and biscuit joiner to build my first cabinet. Thanks again I'll let you know how it goes
I need HELP!!!! I just painted my bathroom, but had to remove the medicine cabinet door to paint around it. In trying to put it back on we realized the screw that looks like it should screw into the wood does not. The screw on each end of the door just hung in there loosely. So I’m having a problem to get it back on. There are two holes with a slot. One slot going up from the screw and one going down. It seems that’s where there would be an adjustment? There is a little bent nub that seems to go into either the hole or the slot and then using the adjustment to tighten it to the frame to hold the door on. The problem is it seems to work in the slot, but just a little too small for the hole. Any ideas?
I bought a package of hinges and I measured and mounted them, but the problem is, they are too tight. They pull the door away from the frame when I try to open them. Any suggestions
I'm a bit confused about the differences with the "overlay" of these hinges. I bought "full overlay" hinges. In that case, how do I measure the door size (I need to make the doors still!) for a frameless/faceless cabinet style?
Tiktaalik it would depend on a few things but the below might be helpful. A full overlay is a cabinet door that covers the cabinet’s entire face frame. This ensures minimal gaps so that only a very small portion of the cabinet’s storage area is viewable. A full overlay is a cabinet door that conceals the opening to the storage area. This type of door or drawer front leaves very little gaps between the adjacent openings so that only a small portion of the cabinet box is visible between units. A full overlay fully rests on the cabinet opening when it is closed. A full overlay does not interfere with the interior space of the cabinet, which is not the case when using a half overlay or a full-inset door. Full overlays can be used on both frameless cabinets and cabinets that have a face frame. Cabinets which use a full overlay design are common with five piece doors, but flat wood or paneled coverings are also available.
I'm so f**king bad at measuring and basically anything to do with wood. My dad was great at this stuff but I didn't want to do what my dad did,I was too cool for that 😂. Now I need to do this stuff I have to pay someone to do it
I've managed to rip the door off of my wardrobe. They are overlay hinges. The screw holes have been ripped out in the inside of the wardrobe. Can I just use a hinge repair plate or do I need to fill in the old holes and re-screw them? (The hinges are attached to the door, and aren't damaged) Cheers :)
I replaced 18 interior doors and used JB wood filler to fill all old hinge holes, pleased with hardness to drill new holes. You cut off a slice then knead well. Easy to push in holes, clean any excess with putty knife immediately. PS. The Rockler hinge hole jig shown is great.
In an apparent recent change, Rockler no longer includes the bit in the kit so it's actually a $90 jig after you purchase the bit too. Kreg on the other hand has a similar jig for $27 that includes the bit with great reviews. The only downside is you're stuck with their bit should you need a replacement.
Mike K the width I will typically use ranges from 2.5” to 3.5”. It really just depends on the project. As a rule of thumb, I’ll base it on how large the project is going to be. As for overlay, that is referring to how much of the door will overlap the face frame. I will use 3/4” overlay hinges is most cases.
Bent's Woodworking thanks. I am thinking of trying 1.5 inch wide face frames with a 1.25 inch overlay to have a .25 inch reveal of the face frame. Would that work? Also, I was thinking of buying doors but after seeing you diy shaker doors I think I will attempt it myself. Would love to see you do a cabinet carcass/faceframe build!
Mike K it will work if you are able to find 1.25” overlay hinges. I do actually plan to do a video on a cabinet and face frame in the near future. If your not following me on Instagram find me on there. @bentswoodworking. If you ever have any questions, you can DM me there and I’ll usually respond right away for the most part. Happy to help!

@@bentswoodworking Thank you!
Can these type of hinges be used on an inset older style frame? We have face frame inset cabinets.
These particular ones no, but there are hinges that would work
you had me at "prepare to be dazzled".
Thank you for info, my doors are 1/2 overlay so does that change the location of my 35 mm hole ? I believe yours were 3/4 overlay. Thank you so much
Thanks very much, super helpful.
They should still work yes.
I apologize if someone asked already. Will this work ok with MDF or particle board?
Yes, just could be more prone to stripping the screws holes
@@bentswoodworking Cheers!
Sorry if obvious question noob here
You would actually need different hinge. These were specific to face frame applications
@@bentswoodworking ok thanks very much for that
@@bentswoodworking enjoyed watching you're videos recently.
Any ideas?
Great skills can u tell me were u purchased ur jig and sq
These were from Rockler
I bought a package of hinges and I measured and mounted them, but the problem is, they are too tight. They pull the door away from the frame when I try to open them. Any suggestions
Great do a video on on painting the door....how u you prep and paint MDF..
I would spray it for sure. If there were any exposed edges I would seal them prior to paint.
@@bentswoodworking Thank you!
Do you have one for inset doors with face frames?
Not yet I don’t
Where can we find the video on making shaker cabinets doors.
On my channel. The video is called how to make shaker style doors.
I'm so f**king bad at measuring and basically anything to do with wood. My dad was great at this stuff but I didn't want to do what my dad did,I was too cool for that 😂. Now I need to do this stuff I have to pay someone to do it
Never too late to learn
Tell me about the drill bit that you used please. Type and diameter?
Which bit exactly?
I've managed to rip the door off of my wardrobe. They are overlay hinges. The screw holes have been ripped out in the inside of the wardrobe. Can I just use a hinge repair plate or do I need to fill in the old holes and re-screw them? (The hinges are attached to the door, and aren't damaged)
Cheers :)
You could use the plate. They also make kits that you basically drill the striped holes, insert a dowel, then screw back into the dowel
I replaced 18 interior doors and used JB wood filler to fill all old hinge holes, pleased with hardness to drill new holes. You cut off a slice then knead well. Easy to push in holes, clean any excess with putty knife immediately. PS. The Rockler hinge hole jig shown is great.

Not a single shot at the final finished look with panel closed? I know it is an overlay, but what does look like in your video?
Where can I find the drill bits you used?
Danielle Kaufman it’s a hinge drilling set from Rockler
In an apparent recent change, Rockler no longer includes the bit in the kit so it's actually a $90 jig after you purchase the bit too.
Kreg on the other hand has a similar jig for $27 that includes the bit with great reviews. The only downside is you're stuck with their bit should you need a replacement.
How do you determine the width you use for your face frames? And are these considered full overlay?
How did you know to use the 3 mm tab setting?
If you know the manufacture of the hinge you can go to the website usually and find all the measurements that you need to include the tab. It’s very helpful!
