William Hill abused the police here and most probably didn't count for this guy's impeccable behaviour. Well done to him. He should be compensated and an apology given to him too.

They have no issues accepting your money for years but as soon as you win any sort of money they want all sorts of personal data to find any excuse not to pay…it’s disgusting
Betting is a mugs game full stop. You get what you deserve dealing with people like this. It's like taking heroin and complaining because it made you ill.🙄

All bookies employ the same scummy tactics, they’ll find anyway not to pay you out, better to use the exchanges you get paid instantly and the odds are better
Imagine him losing going back into the shop, saying he couldn't afford the bet and asking for his money back. Wouldn't happen. Just how do they keep getting away treating people like this ?
It's a company and politicians in pretty much all governments refuse to create laws to hold companies accountable because they also use companies to protect themselves while conducting shady dealings. Even worse, the police will always side with companies and prevent anyone from demanding justice or even warn others through peaceful protest or demonstration that a company is acting criminally. Most regulations that apply to companies, if you read them carefully, actually don't impose any type of penalty or sanction for breaking said regulations.
or going in and making a bet on credit, then he lost, but he needs william hill to send him some documentation before he will give them the money he owes.
As a young teenager, listening to those who were a few years older than me discussing their experiences in betting shops I decided never to enter one and now fifty years later I still have not entered one and I am thoroughly satisfied that I made the right decision.
And? I bet on course and love NH racing. I met many a drinker i hate the stuff ive dealt with the aftermath of drunk drivers.I dont go round patronising others try it yourself!
They're probably protecting their own jobs in all honesty. You should very much blame it on the people at the top. Gambling is never the way to go so you should honestly blame yourself for ever doing it. You are never getting out more than you're putting in unless you're like the 0.001% of people that got extremely lucky before cashing out and never playing again.
They all fiddle, I only play ITV7, £2.00 stake, have done for years, once had six winners and last horse placed, the staff tried to nick my slip but I had photo copies, when police turned up they suddenly found my slip. They said it had fallen down a gap in the counter.
about 20 some odd years ago a guy i knew did a bet on what he thought was a £5 straight placepot but in william hill there were 3 options placepot jackpot or both....he had marked the jackpot instead of the placepot.....after the first race he realized his mistake and to be fair the manager phoned the office and explained but they said the first race had gone so he was on the jackpot.....and all 6 won and the difference between the placepot and jackpot was stark.....think the placepot paid about 20 or 30 quid. for a £1...... the jackpot for a £5 i cant remember but it was alot more......i think it was 6 grand for his £5.......when he went to collect they wanted to pay him for the placepot.......he did get his money but it was about 6 months later.....sad part of the story i hadn't seen him for years and a mutual friend told me only last week he had passed away from cancer about 2 years ago
The only winners in gambling are the ones taking your money. That goes for bookies Casinos lottery ect.. These organizations are huge money makers. I guess the only one that has some ethics is the National lottery as they give millions though charity funding, But Camelot still make billions profit.
They were called incorrectly to a public order offence which they are legally obliged to attend. The issue is William Hill not the Police do not conflate issues that simply don't exist. It's not unheard of for punters to get aggressive in betting shops towards staff.
Same is over eviction of rent, if the tenant owes money they help the landlord break into the property. Some of the younger ones don't even know the law. Just get sent out and assume the business knows the law.

I remember a William hill betting shop in Essex I used to go in. Banned a guy for life when he won £48,000. Before you say wow that’s a lot. He had lost over £200,000 the year before. Disgraceful
What? How incompetent can you get. Real casinos will give you free gifts if you win that much, because they know that is the best way to get it all back.
William Hill will gladly take your money along with every other betting shop but when it comes to paying out, it’s like any other insurance company they don’t want to payout. I’m not a better impression myself, but I do feel that the betting shops should pay out with question if you have the winning ticket. Have a good day..
Of course because they don't want winners, they want consistent losers - as this is their main stream of profit, even if you've paid them more than you've won, they analyse all customers trends and measure them statistically algorithmically.
In the UK police will always attende buisnessses first before the general public , that's the problem the police come in and make the situation worst. Then start arresting.
No, laws against Police abusing their power, which is the real issue and is the next big thing. William Hill are clean compared to Police, look how they say arrested, thoroughly reliant on Police to save their business. A day will come when they will hide in fear from a lawless dangerous society as shatter and lose all trust, faith and hope in government.
They will have the PA's disconnected. If you misuse it, you get cut off. (I used to work in a business that had them. Deliberate misuse = cut off, accidently use you generally get 1-2 mistakes in a 2 year period before you get cut off)
next time those shop staff need Police response to a panic button, I can see the Police taking it easy on their way there. They will be thinking "Oh Johnny must have won a bet again, it's not urgent"......
I used to be an employee at William Hill, they should have arranged the money to be safely transfered to one shop & contacted the man by phone to inform them his winnings are ready to collect. Wtf were these cashiers doing?!
Yeh, they handled this poorly. Also as my time as a CEM we would arrange a pick up with the customer from the bank. Any details were for monitoring purposes (shady in itself) but the customer was not obliged to give them. However, refusal to leave a store will result in police being called regardless of the reasons.
Never gambled but this is what I was thinking - the original shop should have phoned Head Office to arrange the cash to be in place , rather than emptying their float to partially pay the punter.
Its flagged for anti money laundering. They paid the first amount out fine because it was below the limit. The second payouts take him above the limit, so they can't pay it out until they get his details. I never worked in better, but I did work in a business that dealt with taking and giving out cash to customers alot, often alot of it, and I know all too well the shenanigans thats occur due to AML.
The whole thing is corrupt. These companies pray on the weak and vulnerable. Most punters never turn a profit and many are addicts. Some will be made destitute. Meanwhile, bosses and shareholders of gambling companies rake in huge revenues. The house always wins.
I worked behind the counter in one, we could be sacked for turning down a bet. We had a gambling addict played the slots, 2 weeks before Xmas he blew £9 grand in one weekend on them, it was horrible watching him suffer, tried to talk him out of it but he thought he had a system, he didn't of course. He maxed out a load of credit cards, finally found one with £70 left on it, asked me to put it on the slots I said no I can't take your last £70 off you I can't live with myself if I do. Could have been sacked for that, didn't care I'm not a monster. Left shortly after It was a rotten job, soul destroying.
I was waiting for my wife to finish work and I was 20 minutes early. There was a betting shop close by so I decided to go there to kill time. I am not a gambler and have rarely been in a bookies so I didnt really know what to do. The staff were really helpful and showed me how to place a bet. I picked a horse with a nice name and put £50 on it to win. The bookie explained that the horse was 50/1 and I stood no chance so I asked what he would back and quite rightly he refused to give me a tip so I backed it anyway. It won by a mile. They told me they didnt have enough cash to pay me and said I had to call back the next day, which sounded plausible so I went back the following day. Thats when the questions began. It was obvious they thought I had somehow cheated and even told me they had checked with other bookmakers to see if they knew me, presumably they had shown them cctv with me in the shop. One of them blatantly called me a cheat and the cash was handed over very reluctantly. One positive thing, it put me off bookies for life. I spent the £2.5k on a holiday.
I have never cared for gambling or sports betting, but I have theoretically won quite a few sports bets by : A : not following the sport and only following the hype. B : picking the side I feel is being propped up as the most likely winner to lose ! I just always had the notion that sports betting is worse then a scam and is an outright rigged racket that sports organizations strictly follow to make more money for certain people and the company themselves ! Oh I should probably add : C : only bet on the big grand finale games like the Super Bowl, championship belt, etc ! I probably could have been quite rich if I wanted to bet, but even though I theoretically could have won money on those events, I still don’t trust the system ! It is probably being rigged by a.I and statistical data for years now so it’s a dangerous game to play !
You're lucky they paid you. I personally know people like you who have been accused of being in betting syndicates and had their bets frozen, 50/1s aren't supposed to come in 😂
The way WH see things: Anybody who _dares_ do something as _obscene_ as trying to collect legitimate winnings from a bet is a *criminal.* Why? Because a legitimate £1,000 prize paid to an honest and legitimate winner is £1,000 less they can throw at their shareholders...And with the way this country is headed, that near enough constitutes an actionable *offence* ... 😣
The irony to your post is they're the robbers. Absolutely disgraceful of them, I just hope all gambler's out there see this and boycott the fooking thieves .
To be fair, any money won at gambling didn't come from the company, it came from customers who are stupid enough to gamble. It's rather unethical to take stupid people's money, isn't it?
The gambling industry is an absolute blight on society. There are blatant issues with them profiteering on people with gambling addictions and their lack of willingness to pay out is also disgusting.
This is why I told my friend to stop betting - because he will NEVER WIN. All the big betting wins, including lottery, that are announced in TV and Radio news programs are a scam - it is all a lie. This was a mere £12,500 and they didn't want to pay?
The gambling industry does pay out. Watch this video fully, but the government has stuck its nose into gaming in GB. They are asking for figures for large gamblers. I wouldn't gamble at William Hills if this is how they treat their customers.
William Hill should pay compensation to their victim for stress and defamation of character. They should not take bets that they can’t cover if they win.
Another trick they were doing was take bets online from under 18s, but when the bets win, they ask for age verification. They must have made millions doing that.
I have no idea why that is legal for them to do it. I had the same after winning some money, sent proof and had to chase multiple times before they paid out. I asked them why I wasn't age verified when I deposited and they said it was to provide a smoother experience.
You're talking out of your arse. If anyone is able to get past the age verification checks and gamble, once it's found they are underage, all bets are voided regardless of the outcome, and the stakes refunded, it's near impossible to open an online account with a uk license bookies underage unless you lie on registration eg. Use older family members information
Not really. That is most likely covered in the small print. In my country you arent alowed to bet at all unless you are of legal age. And they do warn you that you must show verification if you win over "X" amount of money. So those online was betting illegally, and its there own fault. They should ahve read the rules, instead of just clicking "okay" like most do. It is litterly one of the very first thing you agree too when online betting lol.
They can’t do that because then they wouldn’t be able to launder all the local drug dealers and pimps money and would have to shut down, a lot like cash converters would have to close if it stopped taking stolen goods.
I would like to say I am shocked that a company like Wilham hill acted in such an unethical matter without any scruples but I would be a bare-faced liar if I did.
@@Silenciobob - I don't gamble very often but won nearly £800 9 years back at Genting Casino. Gave £50 tip in total to 2 blackjack dealers. I'll give tips to dealers in casinos if I have a rapport with them but I'm not giving a tip to someone who does nothing apart from take my money.
Not the same I know, a few years ago my wife won a good amount on Sun Bingo. It was held in her account for days before she could withdraw it in her bank. After it was transferred in to her bank, Sun terminated her account. It was like they wanted her to gamble it.
I was a deputy manager at William Hill and I could tell you some stories that would make your toes curl, some of the underhand things I saw, the way they don't care about customers and would even accuse their own staff of stealing, they will try anything to make sure they don't have to pay a large bet out, yet they will let people use their whole wages to play the machines and lose the lot. The way they use regulars details is underhand too, so many things are wrong with that company.
Can people claim for this kind of thing? you're there to back them up or does your ex company stop you from doing so? For instance, can they sue you if you actually called them out on these horrible practices, if you were to correct these errors and be on the side of the customer to ''clarify'' there owed money?

I worked in a competitor of hills for a couple of years. While there were annoying checks they like to do and even some situations where the company clearly were trying to wriggle out of paying out, we in-shop employees, and certainly I, were actually more inclined and preferred to get all payouts, particularly large ones, paid out in a swift, professional manner. We didn’t care too much about the sporadic dodgy and dishonest requests from above. It made our lives easier as people dealing with customers face to face to get it over and done with and off our to do list.
They are clearly running a racket. The same as insurance companies. None of them want to pay out it’s disgusting. We should stop using business that don’t operate fairly and are running scams

Absolutely fncking disgusting. What also comes to light and is equally fncking disgusting is that the police responded to this call but they don't respond to calls of burglary in progress and other calls where public safety is at risk. A touch suspicious
Police like to poke their nose in other people's business, kind of branching out to get some extracurricular, then get a confused look on their face,as they hide their shame and ignorance. Total scam operation 👌,Police, we don't need them, corrupt to the core.
It's because of these calls that there aren't enough resources to stop the crimes you suggested. Cops don't discriminate on calls, if somebody wastes 2 cops time on something completely irrelevant, then those 2 cops cannot answer any other calls. You can imagine how many calls a day cops are being wasted on, this is probably standard practice for these glorified bookies..
He was in the store for a long time before the police turned up. Let's not pretend they went screaming in with blue lights! Businesses calling trespassers is common. It is not the business of the police to referee contract law or private agreements, their job is simple: prevent a trespass if a representative of the land owner has told someone to leave. And that's what they did. Even the narrator says the police officer phoning the area manager was a "waste of public money" - he's right, they should turn up, ask or otherwise remove the trespasser, prevent a breach of the peace and be on their way. They are not mediators in the civil dispute, merely peace officers when it comes to trespassing. That in no way invalidates our man being in the right, it's simply impartial policing.
They were never created to protect civilians. They were created to protect the big guy and give you an illusion that they are protecting you. We, civilians, literally paying for their policing security. It’s done in a very clever way if you think about it. It’s like a sales man come knocking to your door to sell you a knife and then convincing you to get insurance for it too.
I worked at William Hills and quit November last year, they was so backwards. Would make us walk sometimes upto half an hour away to a post office with lots of cash so they make money on the interest, which then leads to situations like this, having no money in shop to pay big payouts. Constantly pushing SGI's, making staff go out into the shop floor whilst lone working to make sure the angry man is fine with his gambling habit. Constantly ignoring the losing percentage of customers and absolutely hounded us for personal data on punters who would win. Honestly it felt horrible working there and I'm glad I'm out, especially when you see videos like this. 888 Casino take over was the worst the thing to happen to that company.
Walk to post office? Thats a security risk that. They dont have the man in the armored truck with the handcuffs on a briefcase to collect the money? I would have reported them on the spot if they did that.
I'm sorry I got to laugh at part of your comment, one of the complaints your making about WH is that they made you conduct an SGI's while one of the complaints in the video is that WH was not interested in doing an SGI with this customer.
I'm utterly disgusted any civilised country allows this level of gambling to operate. Then again, if governments stopped all gambling and smoking, imagine the tax increases they'd be asking of the population to make up for that lost revenue !!!
Are you kidding. You think any bookies would pay for security firms to collect cash. We had to bank daily in my shop, my post office was directly across the street. Not Hills though but same set up
So the real corruption is within William Hill , not the customers. Placing bets (no checks) Paying out (checks needed) says everything - just a disgusting practice along with the people that run it.
its not corruption its complacency, betting shop staff dont care they just want to get paid and go home like anyone else, its not some grand conspiracy, the slips are Self service slips which means he likely had no interaction with shop staff prior to placing his bets or if he did they dropped the ball by not conducting a safer gambling interaction with him, but 9/10 times customers refuse to hold these interactions with staff when they try to so people stop giving a shit. its sad but its not at all how this video makes it out to look as if its some grand conspiracy to defraud someone. the shops keep less than 15k in cash and people dont realise that.
Thanks for raising awareness. Shocking that they can treat customers like this and not act within regulation from the start and happy to pocket the bet as a loss.

Yes. If you want all your winnings, do it online. The shops are not banks, and don't carry huge amounts of cash to payout despite what people imagine. I've seen an armed robber enter one and they have little security. (He got away with money). They work on a cash basis assuming 99% of people will lose, and they usually only factor in paying out 1k max per person a day.
"The moral of this story is bookies are not your mates and only want your cash and hate paying out" --> What's sad and damning on today's population is that you need to repeat the obvious...ad infinitum.
A lot of commenters are missing the point about not wanting to be paid out on a card. Bookies want to identify big winners so they can ban them. They've always done this in one way or another. Just like casinos have.
Correct. A friend of mine usually does small bets but won a few in a row. Account suspended. The amount of paperwork was horrendous. Best not gamble i would say. They only want addicts who loose their shirt. They have the nerve to always say gamble responsibly. Of course not that is bad for business.
It's better for the gambling community to test their resolve and start litigation for discrimination, once they've been to court a few times, trust me, the protocols will change. We are a large community after all.
No, we don't at all. Don't understand where you got that idea from. We suggest back on the card due to the risk of walking out of the shop with £10-15k and someone seeing the amount of cash and getting robbed, also the risk of spending all that money again, whereas when it's in your bank, you can't spend it straight away. Just because you win massive doesn't mean we want to ban you🤣
Hats off to this guy for remaining civil and reasonable throughout, unlike William Hill staff. Sadly, in the end they were able to force him to give all the documentation they never required when he was placing his bets. A law need to be passed forcing all these companies to display their procedures on the wall for customers to peruse at their leisure. It's such a simple thing and would avoid the kind of malpractice you see here
A law stating "You may only demand the informations for cashing out winnings that are required to participate in the bets/gambles" would be a godsend for this
"you going to speak to me like an adult and give us your details?" - police officer "you going to try to belittle me because i know my rights and i dont support you trying to protect a company's financial interests?" - the public that pays their wages
Used to work for William Hill 10+ years ago. Used to love being in a shop when someone would win big, usually meant a nice tip. Industry is a sewer. Never looked back after leaving. But not suprised this shit happens as just like retail there are people working who's egos act like it's their own money. They lobby "bribe" the government.

You were brave not really being a serious punter putting £50 on a rank outsider.
I have never cared for gambling or sports betting, but I have theoretically won quite a few sports bets by :
A : not following the sport and only following the hype.
B : picking the side I feel is being propped up as the most likely winner to lose !
I just always had the notion that sports betting is worse then a scam and is an outright rigged racket that sports organizations strictly follow to make more money for certain people and the company themselves !
Oh I should probably add :
C : only bet on the big grand finale games like the Super Bowl, championship belt, etc !
I probably could have been quite rich if I wanted to bet, but even though I theoretically could have won money on those events, I still don’t trust the system !
It is probably being rigged by a.I and statistical data for years now so it’s a dangerous game to play !

Shouldn't that fall under child abuse laws?
Not really. That is most likely covered in the small print. In my country you arent alowed to bet at all unless you are of legal age. And they do warn you that you must show verification if you win over "X" amount of money. So those online was betting illegally, and its there own fault.

Paying out (checks needed) says everything - just a disgusting practice along with the people that run it.
its not corruption its complacency, betting shop staff dont care they just want to get paid and go home like anyone else, its not some grand conspiracy, the slips are Self service slips which means he likely had no interaction with shop staff prior to placing his bets or if he did they dropped the ball by not conducting a safer gambling interaction with him, but 9/10 times customers refuse to hold these interactions with staff when they try to so people stop giving a shit. its sad but its not at all how this video makes it out to look as if its some grand conspiracy to defraud someone. the shops keep less than 15k in cash and people dont realise that.
2 mins in and i get a Willie Hills advert! They've got my back
The fact a betting slip from their shop alone wasn't enough to get the pay out, shows their legalised theives

Thanks for raising awareness. Shocking that they can treat customers like this and not act within regulation from the start and happy to pocket the bet as a loss.
not customers they just want to rob you what thief wants to pay their victim.
I'm not a gambler, but if I was I wouldn't put a penny over William Hills counter. Terrible treatment for the poor lad.
incredible! Pure crooks!!! Williamhill should double his money for all the hassle. Dont bother with these thieves
If this isn't the rich getting richer, using the power of the state as a tool, then I don't know what is. I give respect to the guy who behaved impeccably, from the presented information. Power to him and you!
Thank you for exposing this.
I do not want to risk being treated the same way and will not bet with William Hill.
They all the same
Thanks so much for covering this Caan. Shady business from gambling corporations is often overlooked. This needs to be exposed and condemned
Shady business betting on some low level tennis matches and putting 2.5k on it.
I will never go into William Hills again. I was physically attacked by one of their staff and when I complained they did absolutely nothing about it
I'm shocked that you would have to give them bank statements etc before they will pay out. Who on earth gave them powers like that?
Our glorious tory government gave them these 'powers'. These bookies are only doing what you would 100% EXPECT them to do. If you want to blame someone, blame the government.
@@ChrisM541they are twisting what the govt brought in.
The govt legistration was to get affordability checks BEFORE bets are placed
No bookie anywhere online does this. None!!! You can lose 100 bets totalling 10 grand and it won't matter
You will never be asked until you win and you want your money
Then they come out with affordability BS to try and get out of paying the winnings
Whole industry is parasite scum 🤮
@@ChrisM541 Which powers you are talking about? As none were given, the grey area is so huge that they can avuse the situation that I can agree as nothing is really regulated by I'm curious which powers they actually received in your mind by the law?
it's a fair requirement if that's truly required for KYC reasons. What's not fair is taking the money at bet time without doing any KYC checks, if the max payout of the bet is within a range that would require KYC to withdraw it
@@ChrisM541 I blame gamblers.
I do go to William Hill quite a bit but I'm never setting foot in there again. This story is outrageous. They lost me as a customer.
This happened to me at an online casino this month. Took the casino 27 days of constant fighting and back and forth / "verifications" to pay me my money. I ended up having to report them to the people who are in charge of Pennsylvania online gambling and in the end I still had to strong arm them and refuse to send any more documents or leave the customer service chat until my money was paid to the card I deposited with. How much money did they owe me you ask?... a whopping $200, $100 of which was my own deposit.
I had same issue, they made it almost impossible for me to get the money. They froze my account to start with for money laundering. Then I needed to send documents, but those documents were apparently not good enough. I took me a month to get my 2 grand.
I work in a betting shop (use to be William hill but was the worst place to work) I feel for this guy completely, the staff member should have called around local shops to see if any other shop has enough money, if they do we could either ask the customer to go there and make sure the money would be ready for him or a staff member could travel to other shops and collect the money for the customer, the shop worker was completely in the wrong and handled this so badly 🤦🏻♀️
What a ridiculous situation. Thanks for letting me know never to go bet with them.
They're all the same, though. You're just swapping one shady bookmaker for another.
There all the same
It’s horrible what this Betting company do to punters
Bingo halls can ban people if they win too much too often.

Ladbrokes do it too, there was a famous case and they changed the maximum you could get.
The idea that bookies would help gamblers *not* to gamble is like thinking a heroin dealer would help you get clean.
Just ban betting all together.

If I was his MP I'd be looking at how to revoke their business licence in my constituency after this.
Unfortunately, these bookies have done nothing wrong - out government ALLOWS them to behave in this way. If you want to avoid this scenario, DON'T place £2500 bets, ffs lol.
You wouldn’t be a mp for very long
The moral of this story is bookies are not your mates and only want your cash and hate paying out .
"The moral of this story is bookies are not your mates and only want your cash and hate paying out"
--> What's sad and damning on today's population is that you need to repeat the obvious...ad infinitum.
Shocking new revelation 🤭🤫
@@CJMVector321190 Interesting tip: "They only want addicts who loose their shirt." So always where a loose fit shirt! 🤔👍
Just because you win massive doesn't mean we want to ban you🤣
@@UA-camman1998 hahaha yeah ok mate
Absolutely appalling
Hats off to this guy for remaining civil and reasonable throughout, unlike William Hill staff. Sadly, in the end they were able to force him to give all the documentation they never required when he was placing his bets. A law need to be passed forcing all these companies to display their procedures on the wall for customers to peruse at their leisure. It's such a simple thing and would avoid the kind of malpractice you see here
it would be like wallpaper in small writing and imposible to follow.
A law stating "You may only demand the informations for cashing out winnings that are required to participate in the bets/gambles" would be a godsend for this
Try having to work for them.... fighting 3 sides at once. Always.

Used to work for William Hill 10+ years ago. Used to love being in a shop when someone would win big, usually meant a nice tip. Industry is a sewer. Never looked back after leaving. But not suprised this shit happens as just like retail there are people working who's egos act like it's their own money. If the shop didn't have the money onsite, it was protocol to arrange a bank withdrawal and the customer and manager would go to the bank within 2 hours.
you used to work in bookies, and you think there is nothing highly unusual about some kid placing £2k cash on 3 obscure tennis matches , involving players no one has ever heard of?
and not one, but all.bets win? like really?.Most people can barely put food on the table, but this kid has £2k cash to risk on totally obscure tennis matches.

Paddy Power bans winners on their online gambling site.
I was in the Coral in London's Chinatown and all the machines suddenly went on block. Facial recognition for a guy who had walked in. Again a winner. He asked the worker to explain why. She wouldn't.
