Human Expression - Outside Of It All … 1967
Human Expression was a garage/psychedelic band from Los Angeles, California that was active in the mid to late 1960s. During their career they released three well-regarded singles between 1966 and 1967, all on the Accent record label. “The Human Expression’s downfall came with the decision over what was to be their third single. Perhaps due to the slow sales of the band's own songs, their manager brought demos of two songs, both penned by Mars Bonfire, for the band to consider for their third single. The band selected a number called “Sweet Child of Nothingness.” The song they rejected was “Born to Be Wild”. Mars Bonfire, which is the stage name of Dennis Edmonton, wasn't a member of Steppenwolf, but his brother Jerry was the band's drummer. The reason Human Expression rejected “Born To Be Wild” was because founding band member/lead vocalist Jim Quarles had some doubts about the lyrics. This decision proved to be disastrous when Steppenwolf took their version of the song to the top of the charts. It also coincided with a major personnel shake-up in the band - lead guitarist Martin Eshleman was injured and had to be replaced, and Quarles didn’t like the new line-up and exited”, which ended the band….. Since then there has been several LP releases that include much of their released and unreleased material. …Info source; Wikipedia, discogs, psychedelicized

How different their lives would have been if they had chosen "Born To Be Wild" I wonder what it would have sounded like. Most likely it would have been drenched in psych. Having a #1 record under their belt would have given them freedom in the studio to create music in the direction they wanted to go.
For Human Expression, "Born To Be Wild" is the song that got away. It could have brought them from the underground and into the mainstream. It wasn't in the stars. The material they did release is now classic garage rock. They were one of the coolest psych garage bands from So Cal.
"Optical Sound" is my fav. Ty, D

Thomas, If they would have picked "Born To Be Wild" for their third 45, I guarantee it would have sounded much different than the Steppenwolf version that we all know and love. ...Cheers, DD
