Bach - Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BWV 659 - Van Doeselaar | Netherlands Bach Society

- This arrangement of 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland', performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, is full of mystical expectation, which is underlined by the ‘quiet’ performance of this performance. Although Bach borrowed the form from Buxtehude, in style BWV 659 would not be amiss as the middle movement of an Italian concerto. All the elements are present: a walking bass, a duet of middle voices, and a leading upper voice.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on June 23rd 2014 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Leo van Doeselaar, organist
Organ: Christian Müller, 1734
Many years ago I heard this piece, uncredited, on the soundtrack of a film. I knew it had to be Bach, so I went to a big music store in London and looked through all the books of Bach organ music, hoping I could remember enough to recognise the piece. I found it. It took hours. But it remains my favourite piece, and I always play it at the start of Advent. Thank you for this beautiful and sensitive performance.
Do you remember the title of the movie?
@@Transformed70 It was almost 40 years ago, so I don't remember the title. I'm pretty sure it was a documentary film about the island of Jersey, or maybe the Channel Islands in general. During the section about the local churches this piece was playing in the background. I don't know if it was played at the church itself or maybe it was just a 'generic organ piece'. It wasn't credited (I looked for it). But just those few bars made enough impression for me to hunt down the piece and identify it.
Thanks for your reply. It is a magical piece of music, worthy of your quest 😊 And magically performed by this fine musician. He was my sister’s teacher at the Dutch Conservatory in The Hague.
@@Transformed70 This piece was (also) used in the Czech movie Sílení AKA Lunacy (2005). Be warned: quite a challenge to watch this movie.
Now you can use shazam my man
For whatever reason this piece got stuck in my head today and just thinking about it made me cry.
This is the theme of the looming melancholia of the winter months. When I'm happy, I miss this feeling. Wonderfully performed, thank you!
Nice comment. I totally agree...
this makes me cry so much and i don't even know why.
Me too
Lying in bed listening to it on a cold night
I dont know if there is a better way to express the greatness of the human existence and think of its volatility. I mean, look at that organ: enormous, sumptuous, yet sober and uniform in color and shape. The sound: great and powerful yet tenderly expressive. And bachs music eternal and divine, yet inaprehensible just like all sounds. Magical, excelent interpretation and the shots are a big big ten. Love it
I can listen to this wonder over and over again its just magical ♥️
Gracias
Such impressive balance between the harmony and melody..
It's as though Bach is inviting the listener to 'step up to Heaven'. So superbly played here by Leo van Doeselaar. Thanks for sharing √
Such harmony that i witness makes my eyes blow up in tears for my heart is filled with the light of happiness as my ears feel as if they were blessed.
Do you also feel its kind of Wagnerian at times? Bwv 668 as well a lot
I hear you...there is something about Bach that transcends everything!
The physical and emotional involvement which the organist shows here adds to the emotional impact. It reaffirms how the music of bach affects so many people both listeners and musicians alike.
I look up at the music of the past like it were a tremendous mountain from which I am falling
Excellent performance and videography, as always. I find it hard to believe anyone who is sensitive to music and even a little knowledgeable could press "dislike". Wonderful singing style with long phrases and wonderfully expressive cadenza at the end. Yes, the harmonies crunch with with so much dissonance, and, while knowing this, I can tell the performer is following each melodic line of the accompaniment. I would challenge those displeased listeners to even try to hear that. I have loved every cantata you all have recorded at such high quality and am pleasantly surprised to hear you're doing the organ music of JS Bach as well.
Thank you for this wonderful music and this touching interpretation. It is true: A life without Bach is perhaps possible, but definitely pointless. I wish you all a peaceful advent and a blessed christmas.
Such astonishingly expressive playing. Notes weighted to perfection. Immaculate masterpiece.
Love Bach🕊
One of my favourite musics, thanks for beautiful performance, video and sharing.
He knows how wonderful it is...
So beautiful, OMG
Love this chorale prelude, I'll be using it for the service the weekend before Christmas.
I know you posted this 2 years ago but isn’t this piece a little dark for a Christmas service?
Before Christmas… Advent. Advent is a penitential season in the Christian Church.
@@lolsup9817This is played during Advent, hence the Chorale name. I usually play this first or second Sunday of Advent.
Love Bach music
This particular chorale prelude of Bach's has moved Earthians for centuries, and if we're extremely fortunate, for countless more. LvD's performance is wonderful, and clearly he is moved (yes, literally & figuratively). Any organist who has ever played through this masterpiece is presented with countless pleasures...repeatable, too...forever. // NBS - Never stop this series, please.
Blah, blah, blah, blah. "Earthians"? I don't think so. Try _Terrans._
What a wonderful version..
Thank you so much! wonderful registration. Very well played.
It is strange to me to think that this piece may not have existed without Buxtehude. The original draft of this piece before Bach revised it must have almost been identical to Buxtehude. Nonetheless, Bach has taken something beautiful and made it so much more.
Great performance of a great piece.
Renato Rubino assolutamente vero
One of my favourite pieces of Bach... a beautifully dark and haunting reflection of the melancholia of the winter months 🌹👻🌙
A pure expression of beauty and elegance.
The stepwise bass with all the neighbor- and incomplete neighbor notes is what I love about this piece in the same manner like bwv662, and these harmonics is what we learn (and admire) from Bach in textbooks after all. But I think this piece shows the harmonic ground plan a lot clearer with probably very few changes in it, making the well crafted architecture type more evident
Magical masterpiece ❣️
I love this !!!!

You can tell he wants to be chill but can't help himself. It's too much.
Ontroerend mooi!
That was lovely
Fantastic piece and video
Wonderful. God save Bach !
this is superb to say the least
Prachtig !
So cool
True greatness.

Meer dan mooi!
The organ sounds so expressive in this piece, and played by Leo van Doeselaar this stiff piece of musical equipment, - the organ! - becomes alive.
I often think that JSBach would try to get the most out of each instrument he came in touch with, - writing music which fit the instrument's abilities, and then some more genious added.
I will not repeat the funny comment I read at another piece, that we even have head-banging soloist here -- no, but Doeselaar clearly uses all his power to make the music come live. And it works, the "head-banging"!!! :) ❤
ONLY GOD CAN INSPIRE THIS MUSIC
@@gianlucabersanetti6454 LIKE BACH :)
Yes,Bach loved his God
Agreed.
Or the idea of god at least
@@chrisnewman9693 IT'S A POSIBILITY IF WE PAY ATENTION TO HEGEL, THE IDEA LIKE THE ABSOLUT GETTING CONCRET QUALITY. FOR ME IT'S JUST POETIC, AN IMAGE, A CONSTRUCTION. GREETINGS.

One defect: It ends.
could you tell me which registers you used in this video please? thanks!

well played gg
Love the krumhorn
I think it is Vox Humana.

Man, the upper register sounds like Stevie Wonder playing the harmonica.

This is not an arrangement but the original.
Yes from 18 Leipzig chorales for organ. Nun komm is advent chorale
It is an arrangement of the Lutheran chorale.

Ältestes Weihnachtslied der Welt ! Stimmt das ?
Bach is, by far, the best musician ever and a great believer in God and his son Jesus Christ. Curiously, opening the competition to occupy the position of director of the music school and the church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, several musicians presented themselves. After the presentation of the respective works, Johann Sebastian Bach occupies sixth place. Due to different reasons, the five before him resigned, Bach did accept the position of school and church musician. Councilman Platz observed in the final committee session that, "since we can't get any of the best musicians we will have to choose a mediocre one." What an unfair and lapidary phrase! How many times are people's lives decided in this way!Bach's music is that of a huge believer in Christian dogmas. Most of his works have the following inscription at the beginning: I.I (Iesus iuva: Jesus help me) and ends with S.D.G (Soli Deo Gloria: only glory to God). Such was Bach's faith that, in the words of his son Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, "the whole family began daily activities by praying the creed."

Hopefully the guy didn't sleep too much he forgot to turn the pages.
This piece is just amazing. You should had tried to play it with Vox Humana 8' or some Flute mixed with Quint 2 2/3'. Anyways what disposition was used here?
Looks like grigory sokolov ,,,,
I am sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with the organ.
@@bach This means that the sound recording is not good, there is extraneous noise. Johann Sebastian would be horrified if he heard THIS!!!
