As a total limited junkie, seeing Seth do all this janky stuff and taking cards like painful quandary and get rewarded for it is both heartwarming and painful to watch somehow
The other thing that hurt for me is him taking Portal to Phyrexia P1P1 and then passing all the Prototype cards that work with the same game plan. I think Portal to Phyrexia is a top 5 card on 17 lands (by GIH WR) because of Prototype as much as anything: It means that if you play a bunch of cards that are slightly less efficient (like a 3 mana 3/2) but also make Powerstones, you can have 6 things to play off those Powerstones and can actually be rewarded for your work in ramping (as opposed to dying whenever you don't draw Portal), but if you happen to draw a Boulderbranch Golem and a Rust Golem early and can't play them for full price, they can keep you alive for their Prototype cost until you ramp and get another payoff down.
I'm a new returning player and I thought Painful Quandary seemed insane 😅 But I guess once you're in the 5+ mana range, you usually don't really need more lands, and lands are 40% of your deck, so you can just discard them.
Fun fact: there are a grand total of 6 valid cards to trigger Tawnos’s effect in the entire set. Kind of baffles me that they put him in the limited card pool (in the rare slot no less) with such a small amount of payoff cards.
It's kind of like the non-Soldier lords in DMU. There are only a handful of Merfolk, Goblins, etc. but they put those payoffs in the set. At least with those you can argue they're Explorer+ cards while Tawnos is probably Commander only. Frankly, I'd prefer they have the range of hard to not viable build-arounds for limited than trashy useless rares or rares that could be uncommon if they're not too powerful or complex.
I did get a P3P1 Tawnos when I was already Simic and already had an Obstinate Baloth and Koilos Roc, so I picked up another bird and actually had a couple sweet games with it. I was a super defensive deck with Helm of the Host as my game ending bomb, and Tawnos, while not particularly efficient, has decent enough defensive stats to not be a total brick. Best was the game when I got Helm on Tawnos, and, after several turns of just re-equipping it to additional copies of Tawnos because opponent kept killing whatever I attached Helm to when they untapped, I dropped both Baloth and Roc, making three extra copies of each, and with the powerstones from 4 Rocs, I had enough mana that the next turn I could play the full price Rust Golem that I also had in hand and immediately equip Helm. Not that that matters when you already put a total of 31 power on the board (3 from the latest Helm copy of Tawnos, 16 from 4x Baloths, 12 from 4x Rocs), 12 of it flying, and gained 16 life in the previous turn cycle.
Love the rough drafts content! It’s interesting seeing Seth’s perspective as a relatively less experienced limited player go through his decisions. I find myself disagreeing a lot with his picks, but this deck ended up being pretty sweet. I do feel obligated to say, there was a really late Disfigure in pack 1 that should’ve been your first clue to go into black. I think you should consider cheap removal like that more highly
Yeah, he’s definitely still improving. I was super impressed that he didn’t lock himself into a color in his first few picks this time like he often does.
Would’ve been pretty sweet if you’d been picking all of the disciples of gixes and emergency welds (which is an excellent card by itself btw), together they basically tutor you any artifact from your deck and give you two bodies in the meantime.
This was a solid video but all the subjective misplays and completely unhinged draft made me irrationally upset lmao. I hope yall do another though, any limited content is good content 👍
i actually think seths underrating them. i mean they're terrible in constructed, and they arent by any means broken in limited, but the nice thing is each of them is kind of fine on its own. the life gain from the mine can be surprisingly relevant, the tower is nice since theres a lot thats good to ramp into and the power plant is just big enough to be a threat. and then if you get them all theyre actually kind of great.
Honestly I don’t think your deck was janky when it all came together you somehow lucked into a perfect old style jund midrange deck with just having all your cards either trading one for one cards or replacing themselves eventually grinding the down to where of your draws are guaranteed better than your opponents
I do not understand the play at 25:53. You say "We want to get to Portal", yet Mishra adds RR off of his ability when discarding artifacts, so you discard the only artifact that could potentially ensure a next turn Portal, provided the draws net 1 land. You changed your needs from 1 land in 2 draws to the 2 draws being exactly 1 land and 1 artifact.
Seth I had a super neat deck idea that uses fateful handoff and immortal coil in modern to insta kill players. Maybe look into it for a against the odds episode
i've done 5 quick draft in brothers war, but the IA never passed me 1 single rare/mithic. In the past sets i used to collect 4-5 rares per qd. Can someone tell me if the IA changed?
