- 📜 The Old Badihagwa Cemetery at Hanuabada in Port Moresby stands as one of the last relics of the Australian colonial era. Sadly, this once-sacred ground has been neglected for many years. Many graves have been desecrated, with plaques removed and others buried over. 😢
On Remembrance Day, July 23, 2024, I had the honor of visiting this historic site with Hanuabada villagers Joe Mase, Udu Mase, and Frank Aisi. Just two days earlier, I was there with Rosalie Everest from Australia, where we located the grave of her grandfather, William MacGowan.
Frank Aisi, a senior public servant, passionately expressed that such an iconic part of Papua New Guinea's history must be preserved for future generations, especially as we approach the 50th anniversary of independence next year.
The Badihagwa Cemetery is home to many notable figures, including Sir Hubert Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua from 1908-1940. Sir John Hubert Plunkett Murray KCMG (29 December 1861 - 27 February 1940) served as a judge and Lieutenant-Governor of Papua from 1908 until his death on Samarai Island. 🕊️
Established by special ordinance on October 10, 1912, Badihagwa was also known as the European Cemetery Port Moresby, and sometimes referred to as Konedobu Cemetery. The cemetery operated until 1968, after which no further interments were allowed. Post-independence in 1975, it fell into neglect until recent efforts to clean it up. 🌿
