Celebrating PNG's future innovators: Principals praise the Impact of STEM education
In a farewell dinner on August 11, 2024, the principals of Papua New Guinea's six national schools of excellence expressed their deep gratitude to Prime Minister Hon. James Marape for his visionary leadership in introducing the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. This bold initiative is empowering PNG’s brightest young minds, propelling them toward a future of limitless possibilities.
The dinner was for 76 exceptional students, who excelled in STEM during their Grade 12 year in 2023 at Sogeri, Aiyura, Kerevat, Passam, Wawin, and Port Moresby, and are now set to embark on an extraordinary journey to the USA. With prestigious scholarships in hand, they will pursue advanced studies in fields such as aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, petroleum engineering, and more.
Join us in this inspiring discussion with the principals of these national schools of excellence, as they share their insights on how STEM education is creating a new generation of highly-educated young professionals for Papua New Guinea. This initiative, championed by Prime Minister Marape, is more than just an academic achievement-it is a beacon of hope and progress for the nation.
The PNG government's steadfast commitment to education and international opportunities is not just shaping the future of these young leaders but also paving the way for a new era of innovation and development in PNG.

It's a good initiative set and supported by the PNG government. What do the PNG government have for this cohort of students after completing their undergraduate studies (Bachelors degree) abroad? Do the government have fundings to support graduate programs like (Masters & Doctorates)? We have a lot of problems faced and needs to be fixed in the country. We need a lot of think- tanks and a Bachelors degree is not enough. Public health is one of the many problems faced in the country and yet I don't see any of these students pursuing courses in medical sciences and clinical sciences. The country needs Epidemiologist, Medical Entomologist, Virologist, Vector Biologist, Ecologist, Quantitative Biologist, Enviromental Biologist, Microbiologist, Phychiatrist, Phycologist, Sociologist, Food Chemist, Nutritionists, Dermatologist, Pharmaceutulogist. We can not progress as a nation and achieve our development goals if the country's citizens are unhealthy. So please, encourage the STEM students to also undergo other science programs and not just applied sciences and technology. Healthy population = healthy nation = healthy economy, & better standard of living.

Investing in our premier universities is quite different from sending smart students (not kids). The courses these students are taking are not offered in PNG tertiary institutions, either.
