best katatonia song and of the best ever, amazing final...... great new front cover, the girl is ten years older and it is in the same situation..... great times,i miss that 2002,2003 years
Agreed, I LOVED the original and binged it for years but kick and bass are louder and everything way less muddy. Really bumps now. Added piano and synth parts are cool.
This is the only remaster that I listen to in priority to the original one. And I know a lot of albums. This just feels so right, so genuine. The choirs at the end, the snare kicking ass, everything is just so perfect.
Old light and new colours your picture hangs in the night Is this the right time to set one free and go away In the emptiness behind you I will walk about Surely you'll miss me but long live the doubt What will replace us What will be our memory of this time Second hand impressions Hand them over so we can let it die I remember one time when we were abroad I was laughing at a book I had bought But you were standing against the hotel wall Frozen in an unknown thought
My humble opinion: I don't like the re-issue of Viva Emptiness... The original was a hard-edged album, it didn't require emphasis on the softer elements of atmosphere. Burying the vocals a bit and amplifying the bass and keyboards doesn't help the album out much when it comes to the aural experience for me. The loud, sharp guitarwork and vocals you can feel are deadened a bit, and it detracts too much of that hard feel. I prefer the 2003 version 100%. They tried to mature it and make it sound more like modern Katatonia, which I incidentally don't like nearly as much as pre-Dead End Kings Katatonia.....
I can appreciate louder kick and bass, as it bumps harder on my thx system but yes the guitars are lower in the mix and always loved the guitar work on this album the most. They engeneer could have just scooped the low end of the guitars and kept it up in the mix. Wish they'd stop with the boring pop shit and return to this style.
No problem, to each their own. But god, this remaster is just one of those rare remaster that just hit the spots. I listened to the 2003 Viva Emptiness a lot. As a sound engineer, when I dared tried listening to the 2013 remaster, oh my god. I never went back to the original one. This just feels so right. Burn the Remembrance with the choir at the end, it was just everything I needed. Plus the snare kicking ass, the vocals cleaner, it's just a pleasure to hear. I just can't go back now. But I understand.
There is more low end. The bass can be heard more clearly, and the keyboard parts are more noticeable. It sounds more atmospheric. I love it!

From this album on the vocals started to peak.
So far really liking the new version of the album!

This song doesnt really sound that different compared to the original
***** I agree with you...
So many parts are much more clear. The bass, the leads, the keys, the vocals, the drums. So crisp

I'm going to complain, just because I can. Hahah
