If you're willing, please share your experiences of gender discrimination in the marine science/conservation field. It's a difficult conversation, but one we need to have. Don't forget to visit betterhelp.com/tellysmarinetales to let our sponsor BetterHelp connect you to a therapist who can support you.

Unfortunately, I have had this experience many times. My female friends and family have experienced this type of harassment at companies which haven’t been dealt with in a good way. Thank you for shedding light on this pressing issue and raising awareness that this is a real issue that is still pervasive in society.

It may not be a nice topic, but it clearly is an important one. Well done to you and to Jax for sharing your experiences and talking about these issues.

As a woman and field biologist I've come across so much misogyny, harassment, and rampant sexism as well as workplace bullying. I really appreciate the awareness and discussion that was needed for far too long to be brought to this issue. Slightly feel less alone, so thank you.

I agree with you. The discrimination especially against women is huge and because I am working in the field, some colleagues don't want to work with women. But I insist on working as much as I can with women because I know they are trying their best, how good they are, and how much knowledge and skills they have. Most times much better than men.

From my own experience, women usually make better leaders than men, as well.

I think part of it is the overcompensations women have to make to be taken seriously at times.. it's unfortunate that's a cause for it but they're the most inspiring and hardworking people I've met.

@@Avianiwa For some strange and incomprehensible reason, my comment promoting women was inextricably removed without apparent reason, but yet I can see your reply here. That's very nice, though, as I haven't been completely removed and sanctioned from this discussion.

Absolutely true - we are biased.

What's important is that we learn to meet in the middle, so that we can at least live long and relatively happy, productive lives.

    to bobsmith below:
That is absolutely valid as your take on things, but to an older cis female, in my experience it is the basis of an excuse.
And it does not reflect my experience in life.
When I have known couples like that, it is usually the result of an older woman being subjugated her whole life.
It's abusive to subjugate your partner. And it's a miserable and lopsided life at the end of things for all involved. It is, from what I've seen, the most common family dynamic, unfortunately-- or it has been. I hope that is changing. It is so nonsensical and damaging for everyone involved and, therefore, the world.

In 2017, I was in my second year promoting gender equality for a PAC, which motivated political action across the United States. It was at that time when we were among the first in the US to promote gender pronouns, the rainbow flag and even interpersonal meditation on our roles as human animals in society. I see it now as a form of quiet protest, and in some cases even a form of emancipation among, at the time, a smaller group existing in a larger social domain. The basis of this all is much the same as what India did against its tyrannical foe back in the early part of the 20th Century, as it was a form of peaceful, non violent rebellion. When I personally was sexually harassed, I was taken aside by both my manager and assistant manager and explained why I couldn't have a written complaint filed, as my female supervisor was someone they had been looking for for several months. I let it roll off my back as I had never complained about problems before this occurred, so why start
I understand what women are going through, but have never been put in any position to solve any ongoing problems concerning them, as it is difficult as it is, for myself... to move up without social stigmas getting in the way of my own plight.

This looks like your longest video in the past year. Maybe get more involved in successful marine biology than gender grievances. Maybe start a Marine biology institution for women in Syria or Afghanistan.
