  • In this video I review the GT Media ATSC 3.0 TV tuner stick. It currently works with Android devices including a smartphone, tablet, Android TV box, and Smart TV. The company claims it might be work with other devices in the future like a Roku TV. For the low $60 price, how well does it work for ATSC 3.0 and does it decode DRM encrypted channels?
    UPDATE: The stuttering issue is 100% from the Android TV box GT Media supplied and NOT the TV tuner stick. Lon Seidman reviewed the unit and didn't have the stuttering issue on his Onn Android TV Box. See video below:

      For this to play smoothly it probably needs to be plugged into a USB 3.0 port and their Android box must be just USB 2. Newer Chromebooks and other devices do have USB 3.0 though so it should be able to play smoothly in most cases.

      Idk I feel indifferent about the DRM protections. If it had a better rollout for devices I would be completely fine with it, as it might be the answer to bring more focus back to OTA, as I'm hating how many streaming services exist...and how many are having ads even with a paid subscription.
      3.0 has been a poor rollout and we should've been where we are now, 5 years ago.

    • @mikemandell132
      @mikemandell132 8 місяців тому

      The actual FCC mission is controlling frequency use and interference. All that consumer protection stuff like net neutrality were things tacked on spontaneously and may be stopped at some point. However, OTA TV use comes with regulations so broadcasters are legally required to do certain things. Operating in the public interest is one. Maintaining a signal at the quality and level authorized is another. Remember the biggest income source for ota stations is retransmission fees. If you are not a transmitter, no fees. Drop your OTA signal and you're just another streaming channel.

      In that case, you may safely buy a Zapperbox right now. Yes, it's the most expensive but it's certified and it works. "You get what you pay for" certainly proves out with the ZB.
      So far, every time an obstacle to performance has cropped up, those people have successfully engineered a solution and pushed it out. Most notable in my mind was a DRM problem affecting only Washington DC and Southern California viewers (like me). ZB got on it and solved it. Now, my KCOP-13 delivers its normal programs, plus Channels 2, 4, 5 and 11 -- all in full HD. (Channels 2 and 4 are encrypted but display perfectly.)

    Fine-tuning the signal on the phone, that's a great idea and great use case!! Im liking the design on the atsc dongles for HDMI. Rather than USB. However I wish they supported Qam channels for my home tv network. Also, it would be even better if it older TV's with component input, or VGA. But with a sharp hdmi to component adapter, you don't need power, however it doesn't scale the video so the device needs to have all lower resolutions from 240p-1080p especially the interlace resolutions in order to be versatile to older displays. And also have a remote that can be used as an app in one remote to be seamless.

    Wow, great price as I can't find a 3.0 device for less than $200 (up to $300). But there doesn't appear to be any way to connect this to a Windows machine (missing software?). I don't have a 4k TV but I'd like to use 3.0 to get better reception on my 1080p TV. As for DRM, if Silicon Dust can't get a license then this small company has no chance. All our elected representatives are in lobbyist pockets to screw up us getting access to free channels. It's a shame.

      The broadcasters claim it's to "prevent piracy" AKA stop another Locast from starting up, but the DVR restrictions is an added bonus for them. They will make more money if they guarantee that an ad will be shown on a TV.

    • @jamesheartney9546
      @jamesheartney9546 8 місяців тому +15

      @@AntennaMan They're not fooling anyone when it comes to the "piracy" claim. Actual pirates will have no trouble getting ATSC 3.0 signals. The only real reason for DRM is to stop consumers from time-shifting and avoiding commercials. I've become fairly convinced that the whole rationale for ATSC 3.0 was to let broadcasters get DRM entrenched so they could eliminate DVRs and (eventually) require payment for OTA reception.

      Some people complain that the error correction only works for awhile before any ATSC 3.0 TV tuner runs out of memory buffer space causing dropped video when moving in a car.
      It really depends on how strong/good the TV signal is. Buildings and other things can still block or weaken OTA NEXTGEN-TV signals.

    Was slightly curious about ATSC 3.0, but the DRM issue has sort of killed any interest in making any substantial financial investment in any ATSC 3.0 equipment.
    Currently use a older Sony smart TV and a internal TV tuner card with Windows media center. Both ATSC 1.0.
    Might pick this up as it is cheap enough where I can check out without stressing out investing in something that might not get certified for the DRM piece.
    Ideally I hope the DRM piece can get killed, as users should be free to use DVR software, or purchase any equipment they like to view OTA content. If DRM is not killed, I will likely stick with my older ATSC 1.0 stuff and not invest in any other 3.0 stuff besides this.

    Why would they be concerned about a Locast version of ATSC 3.0? Wouldn't they just go back to the courts and the Federal government to get them shut down? With my best indoor-outdoor antenna
    I am able to receive 85 channels here,
    about 30 miles NW of Boston, in Southern NH. This is about the best I
    have been able to receive with ATSC
    HD TV. The only channels I am unable
    to receive is Channel 9, WMUR, about
    20 miles north of here near Manchester
    I think because, even though I am
    fairly close, it is north over hilly terrain.

    an antenna outdoors, aimed at it.
    I have not tried the.DVR feature yet.

    the current app is not able to receive
    DRM channels. Thanks 😊 Ray, NH

    finally something with a decent price that's.... not really a complete tuner, the only use id have may be with my phone (if it worked) which, honestly, could be very handy during a storm... but i doubt my circa 2009 Toshiba (not smart) TV is up to this task... and the one Roku TV in the house it doesn't seem to have an app for.... its a great leap forward but, its not technically finished till it understands DRM or DRM is struck down...

    Looks like you need to purchase an additional box in order to use this with your TV, it doesn't just plug into an HDMI port and work that way. I would rather have a tuner stick that works on it's own and not requiring an additional purchase, that would make the $60 worth it to add ATSC 3.0 to an existing 4K TV without it.

      @@AntennaMan Assuming DRM doesn't end up killing off NextGen TV, eventually small inline converters like these would be a good option for people wanting to add AtSC 3.0 to the many many TVs out there without a NextGen tuner. Personally I'm happy with the TVs in our house, and I'd rather not have to replace them. If combined with a media streamer like Roku or Chromecast, a small converter would be a pretty compelling product.

    Thanks for the review and great videos on OTA TV. At work we have a Zapper box which works great for monitoring our ATSC 3.0 signal, and is DRM certified. We also recently bought a GT Media HDTV Mate to test on a TV. The tuner stick costs $60 which you mentioned but an Android TV box is needed. I bought something called an X88 PRO13 for about $35, but I found out that this box is not compatible with the HDTV Player software software. You showed the GT Media box which costs over $100. We may end up buying one to try and get this tuner to actually work. So the total cost will be around $160-$170. I am curious about their support and will look into it and let you know how it goes. Zapper box has great tech support and its CEO actually answered an inquiry of mine. They recently updated their SW which fixed a lot ( almost all) of its bugs and I like their product even though the price is a bit high. Thanks again for all your efforts on free TV.

    How was it for tuner sensitivity for ATSC 1.0 compared to your TV and to the MyGiga tuner? For the price, it looks pretty good as an ATSC 1.0 tuner and the unencrypted ATSC 3.0 feature is a small bonus (at least it's likely to receive PBS in 3.0). If it worked with iPhones and Windows, I would buy it. I disagree with your statement that the future of this device for usability is limited because it will work as long as they have ATSC 1.0.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  8 місяців тому

      The dongle seemed to pick up all channels that I usually pick up. You are free to disagree with my statement about the future usability of this device but the fact remains that the TV stations want the FCC to let them start shutting down ATSC 1.0 as early as 2027. While I don't think this will happen until at least 2030, DRM still puts the long term future functionality (the keyword long term) of this tuner up in the air.

    Many comment OTA tv is dying. I disagree. Broadcast TV isnt on demand which is a limitation, but can approximate on demand by use of a recorder. This is the most efficient use of limited wireless bandwidth we have. Bandwidth is extremely valuable and becoming used for more and more previously unforseen purposes in a mobile society. Any technology that saves bandwidth has a future and broadcast tv is one. ATSC 3 makes it even more efficient. I doubt ota tv is dying. Its just evolving.

    I think a lot of these ATSC 3.0 devices are so new, that all of their bugs haven't been figured out yet. So, I am going to wait a while, until prices go down on these type of 3.0 devices and the 3.0 converter boxes. New tech devices run highest price in the first year of release, but decline after that quickly. When 3.0 converter boxes reach $30-$40, then i may try one out. Some of these brands of 3.0 converter boxes will work better without video lag, but its too soon to tell. Will check user reviews for different brands, before i buy later on. Price and performance is a big factor for me.

    Older people and antennas....well, you swerved into the correct result but i think for the wrong reason. Older people all used antennas decades ago. We know sbout them and are offen surprised they still work. Younger peoole may also be surprised rhey are a viable option but have no prior experience. My opnion is younger urban snd suburban people should try an antenna as they may find there is enough content to satisfy them (possibly suplemented by select streaming) and the savings over the years can be enormous. Invest the savings in an IRA and stave off rhe collapse of Social Security down the road. Yes, Tyler has said much of this many times but the importance of not wasting money in yourh cannot be over stated. Old people tend to have a lot of disposable income and blow it on cable, eating out at diners, smart phone data plans for Facebook and should be saving it for their kids inheritance. Ha.

    Like the FAA, the FCC has been more responsive to those they regulate than to the public. We all seen the resultant 737 Max debacles of the last few years. This is what happens when the regulators become too friendly to those they regulate. You get DRM and planes that can kill you due to insufficient oversight. Industry is great but they pursue their own best interests. Where there are regulators, they need to do their jobs to protect the public interests.

    I think this kind of tuner stick at a price point around $50 - $60. is a step in the right direction to make the new standard more attractive to consumers. The only hurdle, and this seems to be a common thread in the roll out, is DRM. Until DRM encryption is addressed and the issue with it resolved, none of these tuners & new tv's will entice enough viewers to upgrade. Personally & as an owner of a HD homerun tuner, I won't spend another dime on any upgrade until this is resolved for good.

    I still think that DRM encryption would become a ploy for local TV networks to charge people for over the air signals. Unless something is done to curb the DRM encryption, either the networks will be trying to get more money since cable companies are being phased out slowly. The worst case scenario would be people stop watching local TV and the stations go out.
