- Back in 1989 Yamaha created the OW-01, a homologation special built for superbike racing. With a staggering £12,700 price tag, it cost more than the Honda RC30 and with only 500 built, the Yamaha was more exclusive too.

I had a good job when I was also 19 (the year this bike came out) I was able to buy one had to wait for a few months till it arrived at my local Yamaha dealer I got to assemble it from the crate at the local dealer - one of the happiest days of my life (it was absolutely wicked) and had all of the police watching me like a hawk.
. the sound was glorious and the power was amazing, I Loved it. the only bad thing was it ate tires - Dunlop rain racing tires were the only tires that would hold up !I could not run slicks in my area because of weather condx. oh and it was hell to try to get insurance on it ( as a 19 year old kid ) I had to lie through my teeth that it wasn't an insurance blacklist , it was not really built for regular street use. sold it 7 years later to a collector - wish I didn't . enjoyed the video thank you for bringing back some great memories ! - Lön
Wow! What a great story! A friend of mine has just purchased a beautiful OWO1 through an auction! There are still plenty of us around that fell in love with this bike!
I have 2 FZR 1000 exup 89/90 in this red and white paint scheme! It was due to falling in love with the OWO1! In Florida they were just nowhere to be found!
Great review MCN! Please do some more reviews about old bikes, like ZXR750,GSXR750,etc.
passed my test in 99 bought a mint fzr600 next day in these colours, absolutely loved this generation yam
Back in '89, The FZR's were the best you could buy. To have the chance to ride that 750 would be fun. The old bikes from the day are badass!!! Id rather have a bike from those days than any bike of today.
Couldn't afford one myself but my best mate could and would lend it me every other Sunday, great memories of letting it go over Belmont on the back roads to Blackpool!!
I love the design and sound of these early 90s Japanese bikes. I'm thinking about getting one if I pass my test in a few months seeing as they're so cheap.
6Twisted did u pass?
This, and Honda RC30 were the dreams of motorcycling world back in the days.
I actually cut out a small photo from Cycle World and taped it to my school folder and dream away of owning one...
I'd take the OW-01 over almost any new bike today. It's beautiful.
Same here, my dream bike....still looks good today!
+jjs777fzr eh no..nr750 aged very well. this thing is ugly lol
jjs777fzr - definitely. Still modern looking and can hang with anything in its class.
Ive ALWAYS LUSTED OVER THIS BIKE WITH THE DUAL GAS INLETS AND THE 20 VALVE GENisus
I like the aluminum tank and the downdraft carburetors and the tilt of the engine forward but I'm missing the upside down forks and the brace swing arm when did they come into use? the factory models had them for the Suzuka 8 Hour race won by similar bike
Love how that bike sounds!
What a fantastically shot video! The colors of Neevesy's riding gear matched with the OW-01 looked spectacular! I wish I could get that helmet and leathers in the same spec. Well done Neevesy and Mykel!
Beautiful bike!! I’m currently restoring my 1988 FZR-R 750 ( the year right before the 0W01). Very similar with same engine.. amazing looking bike for being 30 years old!!
Cool bike. I own a 1996 YZF600R and yes it has a speedo cable, the same kind of reserve switch and the same kind of choke lever. I still love riding that bike. 40k miles, no issues still runs great!
The sound when you downshifted into the corner was immense! I mind I always heard that on my walk to the primary school, never actually saw the bike tho.
I love to watch you MCN.
Probably i watched all your clips (most of them fantastic).
But you just made my day using proper microphone :)
Great video, keep more of these coming!
Nice to see some classic bikes featured.
Great vid. Love 90's stuff so bought a mint 97 blade for 2 grand a couple of weeks ago. Future classic for not very much money. Fukin luvin it !!!
In 1989 I was in the fortunate position of having the dosh to buy one of these, but it was a difficult choice because there was also the RC30 and the Ducati 851 kit. Ultimately, being a Ducati fanatic, I went for the 851 and I still have it but the OW01 and the RC30 have always been on my wish list.
You forgot about some of the real goodies. 20valve head- 5valve per cylinder. One of the 1st with titanium internals- valve springs for higher reliable revs. And lightweight. Adjustable suspension and some other things that have slipped my mind. But it was made to rev.
Remember PX an RC30 for one of these ..loved it..great memories.
How cool is that to ride one of your dream bikes that moved you into riding. Sweet!
This kind of stuff is just as good, if not a little better, than new bike reviews. Keep the mix coming, MCN!
I used to go to a Yamaha shop in Fayetteville,NC and an Army soldier bought an OW01 for his first bike. He crashed it 3 times on his way back to the base. The insurance company totaled it with 6 miles on it. One of the shops mechanics bought it from the insurance company as a track bike. The frame had a dent in it. What a deal!
That was Woburn in Bedfordshire. Remember running in my new 92 fireplace on that road!
MCN videos are getting better
nice review and like the use of the hand held microphone now.
Great bit of MCN
I thought the scenery looked familiar. Thats Aspley guise in bedfordshire thats right on my doorstep The anchor pub there is a popular biking spot.
@Blackops272 its tubes for the ram air system, basically directs airflow from the front of the bike in ducts through the tubes and into its induction for more air
It looks very nice and sounds very modern.
great vid mikey!!!
Timeless video👍🏍🏁
you can't fake that smile. It say's it all.
Gorgeous bike
Makes me miss my 1989 FZR 600. It was my first sport bike ;)
Sounds friggin' awesome!
Nice vid....nicely done!
very nice bike i was 19 back 1989 just passed my test
My dream bike
I think he mentioned the speedo cable to point out the differences with modern bikes (ie - speedo cable instead of an electronic sensor). He probably disabled it so he could go for a good fang without incriminating himself too much...
The bike is a Superbikedream. WSBK rules 1988/2002. Produced som nice exclusive bikes. The FZR750R OW01 is one of them. I like. Tanks. Tony
my dads got a 1989 1000 exup, it is awesome
Sounds really good.
beautiful bike!
yea the first water cooled ones i like those a lot too esp. the first from '92 black with pink stripes/flames very 90's
lovely looker for being 22 years old ;)
"i just want one now.. " best recommendation.
Love it, 22yr wait. I've just had a 26yr wait to ride a slabby for the very first time which is my dream bike, now in my garage ;) They may all be slow by todays standards but have tons of character.
Great video! Great bike!! i like the bike colors that fixed and mach with the helmet and suite!
(you have a Greek man behind the camera thats why is the best video haha :P)
Ah I had one of the very few FZR750R owo1. Sweet bike but the gearing was so high it was kinda a pain around the city. I even took it 4x4ing through a river avoiding hassle from some cops lol. You would be surprised how well it does off road.
it feels good when you ride a bike that makes you shake! It makes you feel alive i suppose 8-D
That was really cool.
AWESOME VID!! AWESOME BIKE!!!!!!
The FZR-750R and the RG-500 is the best sounding 80s bike IMO
He looks soo happy =)
Speedo cable, who needs one when you have a tachometer, by the way appears that speedo cable is disconnected in the video !
buena moto, buenas epocas
sounds great :) and speaking of sounds did anyone else think of "we're alive" while watching this?
Not a homologated version sold for endurance racing?
This is why I ride a FZR 1000! Feels great!
I prefer the model gixxer before the SRAD. I love the flat tank and aluminium perimeter frame.
I would rather have that 750 just for looks alone than a new R6 or R1. I love the stuff from the late 80s/early 90s.
I feel like the cameraman just discovered vignetting on his iPhone and is obsessed with adding it in all the time
oh sticking to the speed limit i see...lol!
what a beast! lovet
was that woburn bedfordshire?
i think my 94 yzf750r born from that. cool.
2018
Looks like its been on fire
@theblackbmxer
Pretty common on older bikes. Could have been a cold day so the cable may have been frozen.
Think it was filmed in woburn in good old MK, I've ridden those roads before. Loving looking bike though.
I owned the 600. What a bike!
Wonder if the speedo cable was disconnected on purpose
A speedo cable but a broken Speedo? What is the cable for then? 6:14
最高だな~OW-01
国内モデルが欲しい・・・
'Dream come true' for me too .....ride the owo1
@69dundee Great Vid Anyway, well done on the proper microphone. I finally get to hear what you say clearly
yea esp the paint scheme i really like round headlights really give the bike a mean muscular look kind of like an american muscle car but the younger generation tends to think the old bikes look ugly not me
I had 2 fzr600s the first lasted a month the second 5 years then an exup for 3 but chopped it in for a new 600 fazer in 98 which I still have but not run for 9 years!! It's a shame really but if I sell it I won't get another bike
nice bike we dreamt of .... best challenger? honda nr? ;-)
amazing performance considering its age. I would have wet my little pants back in the day seeing this.
when is the 2012 cbr1000rr review video coming ?
You know your bikes then! I think the first water cooled ones were the best and I'd pay good money for a mint one than buy the latest gixxer. The lastest gixxers look unfinished and don't excite me at all, whereas an early one always get my adrenaline going just by looking at it.
Fzr r is one of my dream bikes and would trade my rc51 for it straight up! That or zx7rr
Is the bottom fairing burned/melted?
Looks that way
My old baby mine got stolen never heard of it again gutted
Cool helmet :o
I'm not sure how its done in Britain, but doesn't BHP=Brake Horsepower, as in its measure on an engine brake dyno? Measurements at the rear wheel in the US is RWHP. The two are different as RWHP will almost always be lower than BHP due to parasitic loss in the drivetrain.
Just checking to see if someone can straighten me out.
The is a pretty bike for its age.
That's cosmetically a bit rough.. The after market exhaust has burnt the lower fairing.
Have been looking at OW01s.. There's 2 mint available online now for £12 & £15k respectively. Seriously thinking about it. Beautiful bike.
Many bikers prefer the earlier stuff. I would have a ZXR750H everytime over a new GSXR750. I started biking in 1997 and the early ZXRs were fairly new then and I loved the aggressive looks of them, but the latest sports bikes of today I don't like at all. They may be quicker, but just don't get my pulse racing like the older stuff did/does. Sadly, Kawasaki has nothing on the market I like. Honda had the CB1300F, but they recently stopped making it. GRRR. I would buy a ZXR750H if had the chance.
Should ride my 89 750 slingshot :)
Europeans and americans are soo lucky, there's always accessible and affordable ways to start racing at an early age, while some people are stuck in third world hellholes where the whole country doesnt possess a single race circuit :(
Thing looked like a ysr50 when you walked away.
The speedo doesnt work?
he's 41 years old!
well u are like me then i like the first gen fireblade oh and zxr750 h/j series
Dear Camera Man,
This is not The Bourne Identity. Please cease and desist your camera shake and just montage the beauty of the bike. Invest in a cheap IGUS Slider and two blocks of wood and you'll get a world of more shot options to work with.
Also, please invest in a shoulder mount and follow focus. Your subject is the bike and rider, NOT the trees and grass behind/in front of the subject(s).
i'm the same i'd take an old bike over the new bikes anyday unlike ppl my age i'm 23 they think the old bikes are ugly well...i'm different same thing goes for cars don't like they way new cars look that much look stupid, yea the h and j models my favorite love the crazy airtubes that go into the windscreen my favorite gixxer body style is the srad love the way that thing looks
Please Please throw that exhaust over a hedge...... and fit the original ?.......Magnesium calipers ?......I don't think so......but the Bike is ......B E A U T I F U L !
well good for you mate :)
Would have preferred the sound of the engine instead of the music.
