As soon as the shot of the ballerina on the '57 Chevy hood came on I knew it was Cuba. The old car & architecture. In documentary photography and photojournalism, the three things to remember are the same as in nonfiction writing: Position, Perspective, and "Context.

A long lens compresses, mr. McNally? Objection, your honour! It's the distance. You know all about the inverse square law of light fall-off and flash exposure. If we take the "inverse" away, however, we have the "square law" of perspective. At double the distance we have a double-squared (4x) area in our image angle, at triple distance we get triple squared in the frame (9x area). This causes the perception of compression and as we use long lenses to shoot things "at distance" and are not used to seeing at this much reduced angle of view ourselves, we attribute the compression to the long lenses.

If you take it as given that a particular framing is desired (which is a natural situation, when you have identified a composition), then longer focal length goes hand-in-hand with larger distance, likewise shorter focal length and smaller distance. So, when photographers say things like “this lens gives me greater compression”, they are, as a practical matter, correct - and more importantly have made themselves understood by the audience.
Photography is full of that sort of shorthand.

When you are a Freelance Photographer and you live in XYZ city and your shoot various assignments you only need to pay taxes in the city you are based in, correct? Same with your business let right?
