LED Hard Drive Clock Demo

  • This is a hard drive clock I built from a 3.5" hard drive, some tri-color LEDs and a PIC16F252 microcontroller. It works by shining the LEDs underneath a platter with a slot cut into it, and by timing the various colors it can produce an analog clock display as well as other patterns.

I got the idea from this page:
    alan-parekh.com...
And here is my page with more details:

I've been an electronic engineer for 41 years and I find it remakable that folk are so innovative and creative with junk what would ordinarily be thrown away.
    This is superb. Well done.

I think this is a well thought and good learning material for people who want to learn to play around with electronics. Nice work!
If you want to build your own, I advise caution when slowing down the hard drive. Don't slip your finger too far from the center or you might lose your fingertip.

@Surabpachida It no longer functions as a hard drive, it's just art now. Won't be covered.

Having the LEDs mounted to the case instead of on the disc is genius!

  • @daveahlman1

As the slot passes over that segment, the LED flashes red for a duration "t." t is easy to calculate because the speed of the wheel is known as is the diameter and slot width. So the color of the LED can change 10 times over period 10t, allowing for each segment to be a different color. Then it's just a matter of programming the controller to flash different patterns.

@macypctutoriales It really isn't about what you can do for your hard drive or vice versa. It is really about a geek with an old hard drive can do with a lot of time on his hands. LOL. I love these little explorations into what can be done with what most of us think of as junk. Very creative.

I am very impressed. You must be one very intelligent and dedicated guy to do that! I have been programming PICs for a while now but find it hard to get my head around just how you did it. Because of the high speed it must "trick" the eyes to a certain extent?
    Great job!

i've never seen anything like this! i didn't think it would be such a sharp picture, but a 90hz physical refresh like this is apparently VERY VIVID. i'd like to see a 7200rpm drive, i like all these news 120hz displays coming out! ;)

yourtiy, it is loud becuase the slot he cut in it set it off balance. At those speeds, even just a little imbalance will causes it to wobble and be louder.

@bilkyasko Turning it upside down won't change the direction the hand is moving. You'd need to view it from the other side or a projection against the wall for it to be rotating clockwise.
Regardless, even if a little impractical, it's still very cool.

@Amaroqdricaldari A drive's head floats 5-10 nanometer above the platters, if dust comes between the header and the platter, the head will crash.

    Be nice.
It's still a work in progress and I have not finished tweaking the clock part. It's been more fun adding new patterns and trying to mix the colors better than to make the clock actually keep and show the time, especially since it's so loud it only runs for a minute or so at a time anyways.

You can get SCSI disks that go at 15,000 rpm too.
For this project, 5400 rpm is fast enough. If it goes too fast I would need to use a much faster processor to keep track of it!

@MKahn84 Just reverse the electric current going through the motor. Then it will go clockwise.
What would be awesome would be an Optical Disk Drive or Hard-Disk with a Motor that could spin in either direction.

Actually a hard drive will fail if the interior pressure falls too low as the heads need the air to keep them "floating" on the disk.
