I once almost got failed in college because in my final paper I inserted a long quote and forgot to trim it and properly cite it, even though the source was cited in the back from a source i used multiple times. The professor made me redo it with proper citation over winter break before he would consider it for grading. That was as a freshman in college. Not that any of us have a ton of faith in the institutions, but research suggests that gender disparities in math and science achievement vary by race and ethnicity, with white women often showing greater gaps compared to white men. Studies have found that gender differences in attitudes toward math and science are more pronounced among white students, leading to lower performance and underrepresentation in STEM fields for white women. These disparities are less significant or even reversed among women from other racial groups. This indicates a nurture not nature argument against women in STEM. References: 1. Well Claudine Gay got away with plagiarism all the way and past the point when she had been anointed head of Harvard, one of the most prestigious Universities in the world, so yes scholars getting by with plagiarism is alive and well in US Academia. It should be noted, also, that Claudine Gay had a hand in effectively pronouncing the death sentence on Roland Fryers academic career after he dared to question whether or not blacks in the US suffered from worse interactions with law enforcement than, say, whites or latinos.
Why throw in a game of backgammon? Not that anyone cares, but I find it sort of annoying that you wouldn't want to give the conversation your full focus.

I lost two jobs for giving people zeros for plagiarism. One at high school level and one at the master's. And then they wonder why people don't learn not to plagiarize. I love teaching; don't do it anymore. Not able to overlook corruption.

One of the most famous people that was a career plaigerist was Albert Einstein. He was turned into a saint and this was hidden from almost everyone. However, several books by different authors have tried to expose him.
Plagiarism is hard to detect because few people would know or remember prior papers one could rip off. This increases exponentially when it comes to older papers. Nobody combed through years of archived papers to discover this, especially within a couple of days after the "bad statements". They knew it all along. But it was fine, while she was willing to spew the hateful rhetoric *they* approved of. It's only when she turned on the masters that this plagiarism "suddenly" surfaced.

My limited understanding of how some students are completing required homework, i.e., papers, reflections, and projects, is worse than when Wikipedia was invented and students used that as source documentation. Chat GPT is the tool used now. Not original thought, or any process of building an understanding or exploration of a curiculim or subject bring presented. My concern for teachers not calling this out is that the world doesn't work this way (e.g., when you have an issue at work, you shouldn't just type it in the company's A.I. tool and get the answer). We are creating generations of people who dont know how to think, whether logically or otherwise. And going to college "today" is not representative of the act of learning [anything]. Hard sciences aside.
