  • Steve Mazan, AKA Gil, is Zanker Recycling’s Hangry Landfill Seagull
Comedian Steve Mazan is the alter-ego of hangry bird Gil the Landfill Seagull. Gil hangs out at Zanker Recycling, where his daily buffet of scavenger snacks has been reduced to almost nothing as Zanker Recycling leads the nation in zero waste. And Gil wants you to know he’s bitter.
Steve hails from suburban Chicago. He toured the world aboard the USS Scranton, a Navy submarine, and ended his military career with numerous honors. He moved on to Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with not-so-many honors. And no clear career path.
The famous San Francisco comedy scene beckoned Steve westward. Within two years, Steve was touring full-time as a stand-up comic. His clean and clever material made him a favorite of clubs and fellow comics alike.
In 2005, Steve received devastating news. He had stage four cancer in his intestines and liver. Immediate surgery removed the intestinal cancer, but oncologists told him there was no treatment or cure for the dozen rare tumors that covered his liver. The worst-case scenario: Steve had five years to live. That prognosis pushed Steve to pursue his life-time goal of appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman. His story is chronicled in the documentary ‘Dying to Do Letterman’ and culminated in an appearance on the show. Which, by the way, had its world premiere at San Jose’s Cinequest Film Festival in 2011 and won Grand Jury Prize, Best Documentary and Audience Award, Best Documentary.
