Traveling on Sailing Cargo Ship Kwai to the Most Remote Islands in the World

- Sailing for months across the Pacific to the remote islands of Kiribati and the northern Cook Islands from Hawaii, I hop aboard the sailing cargo ship Kwai who provides Western resources to the most remote habited islands in the Pacific. Islands pictured include Puka Puka, Rakahanga, Penrhyn, Manihiki, and Nassau. I was hired by the owner of the Kwai, Brad Ives, to film this voyage after he saw my films of sailing between the Kiribati islands while he walked in on French Castaway Bruno Delalla and I bantering in his house of coral on Tabuaeran during a tropical rainstorm.

Incredible video for this old salt. After 55 years at sea, and many years of watching YT vids of mariners both professional and recreational, this is by far the most legit of them all. And the soundtrack is right up there at the top, also. Nothing is better than coming into port and the whole island is happy to see you. Thank you.
I went to sea to see the sea, but all I could see was sea you see.
I greatly appreciate hearing that from someone as experienced as yourself! Was quite the experience to have the entire island anticipating your arrival with open arms, fantastic food, songs and dance. An experience I will never forget!
It's not exactly legitimate, it's not plying for trade as sailing ships used to, it's owned by those wealthy westerners, it's their toy
I may have been a bit effusive. I wish shipping was more like this..
I wonder if now since the plandemic if kiribas are open arms. I can tell you in indo last year it was 50/50 they said the white man brings the corona. But the locals i knew from years before were still open arms.and knew its the chinese.
Especially on nias.
With this plandemic i stayed longer in indo it was 9 months. But now my plans are to find total isolation. Not from virus but from the communists. I am starting to think about fanning again and palmyra. Both excellent anchorages. Full of sea life. And as far from masks and quaranteens and democraps as i can get. I am on my 37 foot 43 year old cutter and have 3 years provisions. Finding this vlog has inspired me to make the long hard sail. Its 7000 miles to windward to fanning.
I also spent years at sea on commercial vessels, but nothing like this. It’s so refreshing to see happy people doing their jobs and making others happy. I would join this crew in a heartbeat! This is the life I’ve dreamed of since I can remember. I’m deeply impressed and happy to see this life still exists! Put me in Coach!
There is a romance...a hard working romance!...still thriving throughout the tropical Pacific waters thanks to a small fleet of these magnificent wooden sailing ships. Thank you to those that still endeavor to be true sailors!
Steel, not wood.
Wow,.. you guys just played, sang and sailed in to my heart:)
What an journey!
I watched all the Adventures in Paradise TV shows in the 60s and dreamed of living that life. It's amazing to see that it's for real! I'll play this video over many times!
That singing! Stunning. I sang in a choir for twenty years and we never produced a sound like that, pure enthusiasm. Wonderful.
Thank you for the memories, KWAI is EDNA reborn. 30 years ago I was sailing the EDNA, she was similar size and rig. and I recognize the same Islands, lagoons, and sharks. I didn't make it back because the EDNA wrecked and it broke my heart.
It captures true, the people and crews!
So great to catch up with SV Kwai, Met the owner and operator more than ten years ago on the Big Island of Hawaii. Great to see she is still sailing with a wonderful crew. Many happy memories of the Cook Islands, Avarua and Aitutaki. Perfectly done video, no narration just the music and places and people. Kia Orana!
What a life. Those people are so full of life.
It's a real eye opener to see how genuine and kindhearted people of other cultures can be. So full of life they were indeed!
No wars
@@ugotlj4133 Why?
I wish l was just a few years younger.
This is the way humanity was supposed to live.
How old are you? I'm 63yo. I'm planning to buy a sailboat and cruise the world.
dont let your age hold you back. a lot of world builders hit their strides in their 60s. you are as old and as healthy as you want to be. never forget that.... mind over matter.
and i absolutely agree, this is how humans were meant to live. productive, helpful, loving and happy. they all hold hands. if one lets go the rest will follow.
UA-cam needs recommend this channel better .
You are right so much absolute junk on UA-cam
Agreed. More recommendations required! This is a great video!
Agree!
It was recommended to me, It depends on what you watch mostly and the algorithm kicks in. As the saying goes, junk in junk out.
@@Antipodean33 has nothing to do with that... Has everything to do with what corporation sponsors you mainly because of a manager
I've probably watch this video a half dozen times & have never been tired of it. It reminds me of my childhood being on the water with my family in the tropics. I absolutely love the ukulele music.
Beautiful singing on this video ! Thank you !
About 6 times I've watched this video reminds me so much of the old days in Papua fair winds cheers n beers Marty
That was one of the best videos I have seen (and heard) in years. The ‘COSTCO’ (Kirkland) nappies really brought it home, as well as the very satisfied and content look on the faces of all the deckhands.
And thank you for not blabbering and narrating....anyone that needs to be told what you were doing does not belong in that environment.
This Costco delivery vessel travels to the ends of the earth! All the women of this ship really hold the operation together. I am glad you enjoyed my style of filming, I prefer the narration to be told by that of the natives songs over a monotone description of events. Leaves some room for imagination ;)
This could win an Oscar for documentary short, this is brilliant filmmaking
There is something incredibly beautiful about a working sailing vessel moving under full sail.
you really wowed me all through the video - thx a million times, take care.
Karl Gohlke What a fantastic compliment, thank you so much Karl!! Thank you a million. Cheers buddy, and Happy New Years.
I've been "In Love" with these remote island sailing trading vessels since the schooner "Tiki" on Adventures in Paradise!
Unbelievable that something like this still exists today. In addition still beautiful pictures and suitable music. This is worth a big "thank you" and of course a subscription!
Man, this is incredible. I spent 10 years working in traditional sailing ships but none of them ran cargo, they were all training ships, none of them used for their original purposes. We sailed lots of places, learnt alot, but to be running cargo under sail to these amazing communities in the South Pacific is truly something special. I'm tempted to find the Kwai and hop onboard, I might never come back haha.
Great video, what an awesome crew!. I like it that there was no commentary it was not needed, just sit back take in the fantastic views and the atmosphere of life onboard the Kwai and the Islands. Big thumbs up to ukulele player 👍. Thanks!.
Thank you for sharing... if only everyone sang and danced at work..👍👍👍
I could not stop watching this.
The UA-cam algorithm should put this kind of vídeo on top I can believe it only has 150k views , I was searching for a schooner sailing video and came across this . By far the best shot video I've seen so far .
I;m a sailor, so I clicked on this video out of curiosity, but I've gotta say this is one of the most beautiful and entertaining videos on UA-cam, Kudos!
I love the way you have put this together with music without being totally detached from the original sounds. I wish they had drones 25-30 years ago as they really do make these videos.
Puka Puka looks amazing. I have a Cook Islands book showing the kids going to school by boat there.
Really good fantastic I couldn’t stop watching, keep it up.
Awesome music ! Love it ! Thank you !
What an uplifting video. Made to cheer up all who watch it. Brought back wonderful memories of my voyage to the South Seas on H.M.S. Loch Killisport in the 60's. John of Gosport
Fascinating, loved this, thank you.
Big smiles on my face watching this. I live on the east coast of Oz so the South Pacific Islands aren't that remote to us here and have been over on a few of them. Would have loved a life at sea visiting them like this. Idyllic. That singing, I just adore it. Have been in many a sing sing and the melody and harmony that the islanders can produce is like nothing else. I love them to bits.
I've never been to the Pacific. But I am sold!....Love the music and love the people more!!! I wish the world would be like this. Hopefully one day I'll get to see the south Pacific.
Song transcends time and culture, was neat seeing the Kiribati crew and Cook islanders harmonize while having an entirely different language and cultural background. The constant singing definitely made the experience nothing short of magical!
So I am watching this video that is quite amazing and I am so happy I am almost in tears. Then I see the guy with the Seguin Muskoka tshirt. Thats basically an hour from where I live. Awesome.
I'm Micronesian and this is the first "documentary" I have seen of my fellow Micronesians in Kiribati. I never knew that there were so many islands in that nation. I have always known about the Marshall Islands and the Islands of Palau, Guam and CNMI....but this is perhaps the most I've seen on Kiribati. Wow, thanks for the vids, been following your vlogs for quite some time now.
Fabtastic video. thank you for making theses, a great way to see these amazing people and their home islands. Thank you
Amazing,The songs are incredible,almost cry.
In times like now it is nice to see happy people.
Beautiful channel, thanks for sharing. 👍😊

Incredible. Love all the music. Looks like you supply a much appreciated and needed resupply to all these beautiful people and places. First time watcher and very impressed.
Was quite amazing to arrive at these remote islands and have the islanders be genuinely stoked for your arrival. Was nice and rather surreal at times when they would sing us songs after landing on shore.
Amazing! Beautiful! Sensational!
Bravo! Brilliant
This is beautiful...a treasure.
Thanks for the wonderful journey. I've logged a bit of time on commercial fishing boats back in the day. I miss the sea and salt air and of course the fresh seafood.
Fair winds to you all.
And I like all these funny crews. They are truly fantastic.
What a wonderful film!
The joy is contagious!!😊👌😘
Watching again this vlog and is so awesome in every way. Great editing, great takes, color is unreal ...drone shots amazing and landing that drone on that ship full of rigging...Damn!...music perfect...muchas gracias again..
As a sound guy I am so happy to see you use the native music and beautifully mixed in. I grew up in Asia and truly miss those days. Life was so much simpler. Great video. I am going to watch more now.
Ok Banana man, this is the best among some really great videos.
Hello from Man O War Cay, Abaco Bahamas. We know the feeling of the freight boat arriving.
THANK YOU
Came across this, just wonderful, like others, I have a smile on my face. To sit here in Scotland and view these wonderful places that I will never be able to visit, the joy is beyond words.
This crew knows how to have fun. looking for more.
Thanx for sharring this it is realy beautiful the happy people and the sailing ship the islands so beautiful there amazing 👍
Tank you for this amazing beautiful video. It makes me happy to see. People seem to live with joyous hearts in their friendly nature home.
Greetings from Germany
Hey Cameron, GREAT editing job, FANTASTIC video and AWESOME memorial shots of Tekateke...you even got him smiling! Answering some of the questions posted below: the "developed" Western World treats clothing as disposable and so the islands closest to Hawaii have bales of used clothing from places like salvation army shipped in and the islands like Solomons and Vanuatu have bales from Australia and New Zealand. So, yes...it is trippy to see a Tee with a slogan or advertising that is WAAAAYYY out of place!! It took me years to get my customers to switch from Huggies to Kirkland diapers...BUT note I WAS pushing reusable cloth diapers HARD at the same time. And yes, all 8 islands the Kwai can service on a voyage, greet her arrival as if you're Santa. Note: the work is a LABOUR of love: for all those with wide eyes, let me stress the LABOR bit! ko'rabwa, mei taake, mahalo and tekeraoi
Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing your amazing experiences
This is so beautiful! This is great!
Thank You. I fear I've grown too old to run away and crew on a ship like this but maybe I can live my life with more joy where I am after seeing your example.
I honestly dont know how best to say this..but it is just soooooo beautifil. Love is the word.
just superb, watched it twice.
Absolutely stunning video. Instantly subbed, looking forward to browsing your collection!
Enjoyed watching this and its so beautiful
I keep watching this video and wish there were more like this.
Very well done, informative, entertaining and of great interest.
You tube is a great way for people to present their work to us, videos like this should have support, l never watch TV any more, this is factual and great viewing, especially for an older disabled old fart like me, watching this lets me live an experience of others l wish l could have had in person.
You tube keeps me living.
this one is so far my favorite. The music the people the land the ship .... ohhhhh dreamy
Thank you guys so much for this wonderful video!! I'm here in NYC in the middle of this crazy "Pandemic". I hate it! And I came across this vid.....It made my day! These people are so beautiful. Thank you again...you guys gave me hope in mankind again.
Ahh and NYC must be quite the place to be waiting out this whole thing.. I couldn't be happier to hear that my work brought more joy to your day, I consider that the most important of accomplishments! Plenty of good in humanity if you look in the right places ;)
drone scene where penrhyn is written is just breathtaking, manhiki as well
Amazing footage!! I was an honorary Kwai 'dockbitch' in Hawaii 2015/16, helping JMB wrap n pack for kiritimati. It's amazing to see the places I'd only heard of on a Pier in Hawaii or on kiritimati. To see penryhn and Nassau in your video just brought it all to life! 💖
Me habéis emocionado y sacudido el alma. Aún hay alegría de vivir en este planeta de lujo. Abrazos!!
Thank you for a Wonderful video
good people of the Cook Islands good music all the time best wishes
Time well spent for you and me, thanks
Thank you so much for this post.. I want on that boat!!
I enjoyed that, thank you. Happy people.
Wow. Beautiful video!
Buetiful.
*Song dance and people*
Thats a journey i didn't think existed .
A supply ship to the islands i have never heard of or seen before.
Amazing to see these islands are inhabited and have Modern shelters,
_Greetings_
It does not get any better than this! After reading about the UN agenda 21 this morning. This video lifted my soul! Thank You.
So wonderful, seems like there isn't any bad energy in the air, all fun and living the moment. No care about tomorrow, it will be delt with tomorrow 🙂
Love it! Would also like to see Kwai in heavy weather.
The Pacific...thx for the reminding!
Wow, you just made one very happy man even happier. I said to my wife, videos like this just show you that life is too short. I did years at sea, in the tropics, (Nth Aust) but you just showed me some of the most beautiful scenes and people I have ever seen. Wonderful, and thankyou!
The ship is fro Hawaii, go there and ask for information. Or ask Cameron or Chuck. Or search in google for KWAI sailing in Kiribati
What a great ship, and impressive people.
I really love your boat. Its really beautiful classic design. What a boat it is? Brilliant.
Awesome video. Very happy people. It’s nice to see that.
what a wonderful sailing video- made me subscribe!
Totally Awesome a!
Cameron dude, you are a legend! Just came across your channel en insta. Love it all.
Excellent short film - Bravo!
Didn't know cargo delivered by sail still existed. Great to watch....and listen!
Very amazing 👍
I'm so home sick now wishing I'm home love it how you travel from different islands to the another.
Well, you both did well. I am entranced
I love this production. It really portray those remote island communities. I've been fortunate to visit west papua and Raja Ampat quite a few times and it's very similar vibe
Beautiful!
She's a beautiful song, ship, islands and people!
