  • With the lead ban being a major discussion among the European shooting community I figured it might be a good time for this video. I discuss the pros and cons of both traditional lead core/copper jacket projectiles vs Monolithic. There are a number of falsehoods circulating on this subject. Luckily I have been designing and testing high BC and expanding monolithics for around 10 years so this is based on the testing data I have seen, not from Malcolm at the Sunday shooting club gossip session. I try not to go into too much tech detail but if people want any specific information just ask in the comments. Keep the comments sensible and polite please.

Interestingly, I got to test some Monolithic, or solid copper Barnes tipped TSX 308 168GR for the first time this summer I found them to have better accuracy than the 308 Sierra 180gr I was using normally, I do not do the handloading myself, but both heads were reloaded into the same cases which I think are PRVI which get reused, I was getting under 1 MOA at 200 yards with a 100 yard zero, and the solid copper rounds do not fragment at all but they do fully expand into a proper mushroom. They were 30% more expensive than Speer and 10-15% more than Sierra bullets.

The TSX are superb bullets. Great choice. Hopefully prices will go down as production volumes go up!

@@thatgearguy I see your handlers deleted the comments section on that air rifle video.. You are definitely pushing agendas that are anti gun and anti air guns. Probably connected to the police too. IT'S OBVIOUS!

Are monolithics any harder on a barrel than lead core?
Also, would twist rates of barrels need to be changed?
I really hope the steel-target (long) ranges mentioned find a way to deal with the situation, there’s a fair amount of grazing animals milling around the target area…..monolithic’s propensity to ricochet may be just as undesirable as lead.

Monos made from Brass and Copper are no worse on a barrel than the same pressure load with a lead core copper jacket projectile.
As monos are not as dense as lead they will be longer if viewed weight for weight.. example a lead core copper jacket 300gn projectile is able to be loaded to cip overall length and will be stable from a standard 1:9 twist 338 barrel. If you try to run a 300gn monolithic it will be so long it will take up a lot of case volume at cip overall length. It will likely be unstable in flight with the 1:9 twist. Hence monos in 338 tend to max out at around 275gn.

Hi, you havent put me off monos yet.
    Example 300 win mag mono-
Equiverlent copper 180gr would drop to 165gr
Better flight ,less recoil , improved accuracy, with boron Nite coat to extend barrel life to 2500 rounds due to harder metal.
    Am I close ?
    Thanks

It would depend on what you intend to shoot. If its deer or similar I would drop to 130gn. The 165gn would be fine for bigger game. If you just want to hit paper and steel then it doesnt matter, use whatever you prefer. Barrel wise the monos dont do any more harm then a copper jacket would.

I would suggest he is making some mistakes with his selection. He will need to go light for caliber. Tell him to try a Barnes mono at around 110gn for 30cal. The Tactx 110gn is an incredibly capable monolithic projectile. Failing that Lehigh and Peregrine have some great options.

he is using one of them 6.5x47 lapua numbers , he did mention he was "needing to shoot heavy" , probably to compensate for supposed density loss ? , i will mention about going light but he is a sika man and he wants them to drop within 500yds so he will be a sceptic lol @@thatgearguy

perhaps , it is a minefield of ballistics out there , easy to overlook the numbers or miscalculate @@hardergamer

@@captainflint89 This is very true, and not all rounds work well in every gun.
