Oru CBI Diary Kurippu is a Malayalam mystery thriller film directed by K. Madhu, written by S. N. Swamy, and starring Mammootty, Urvashi, Suresh Gopi, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh, and Sukumaran. The lead character, CBI officer Sethurama Iyer is inspired by a police officer named Radha Vinod Raju, Jammu and Kashmir cadre IPS Officer who in 2009 was appointed as the first chief of India's National Investigation Agency. It was the highest grossing Malayalam film at that time. Considered one of the best crime thrillers in Malayalam, it eventually developed a cult following. This is the first instalment in the CBI (film series) featuring Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer.Oru CBI Diary Kurippu was a commercial success at the box office. It was the highest grossing Malayalam film at that time collecting around ₹ 3 crore, beating the previous collection record of New Delhi film which collected around ₹2.5 crore (US$330,000) from theatres. The film had good reception in Tamil Nadu.The film ran for one year in Tamil Nadu box office.The movie is considered one of the best investigative thrillers in India. The character of Sethurama Iyer became an instant hit.The CBI series has announced the fifth film of the series tentatively named as CBI 5.
